Agreed. For all the issues with the subways, the bus fleet instillation has been pretty good, and can be purchased and in-service in months, not years. That being said, this should be a back up to the back up plan, no one is going to want to take the (L) go to street level because of overcrowding on the (G), wait for a bus, go slower, and the go back on the street and walk to the Court Square station, when you can do that in-house on the subway.

Agreed. Many people are going to be reluctant to ride the buses.

However, keep in mind that these buses should run as shuttle buses. If the MTA purchases the right number of articulated (accordion) buses and bus lanes are created,  then these buses should run efficiently and quick. Also, articulated buses can accommodate more people than regular buses.

This would not be a sufficient backup plan. Without a significantly expanded G, the 14th shutdown probably can't happen.

Yes, but if the r179's aren't delivered by April 2019, there will be a car shortage, and the G train can't be expanded if there is a car shortage. That's why more articulated buses need to be purchased just in case.

Bus order turnaround is quicker because it's a bus and not an 8-10 car train. There isn't much to it besides ensuring the bus actually runs and can fit on city streets. Trains are a different monster entirely because of the track layout/dimensions, the signal system and a variety of other factors. That's why we're practically stuck with only two vendors at the moment. It's also why I'm hoping someone besides Kawasaki gets the R211 order, if not for anything else, than to provide some serious competition and an alternative to the status quo.

    I completely agree.

  2. At this point we just have to wait and see what happens with the  r179's. As a backup plan,  the MTA should consider purchasing additional articulated  (accordion) buses to run parallel to the G train because there will be a car shortage if the r179's aren't delivered by April 2019 when the Canarsie tunnel shuts down.

Seen a video about the 10-Car set return to Pitkin after being at Coney Is

    Is this the video?

This evening, I saw a train that look like a r179 crossing the Manhattan Bridge towards Brooklyn via the B/D train. Any report on that?!

    From earlier tonight.

The interesting part is that I think something happened at 110th or 116th with the train. It bypassed 125th and came back down NIS on the express tracks.

Mechanical issues?? Did the r160's encounter any issues while being tested??

  5. Will the J train still be running R32's while the r179's are being delivered?

Once the A train gets the R179'S five car set delivered will a majority of R46's still be running on that line.

All r32's will be displaced from the A, C,J and Z once the r179's are delivered. All r32's will be retired after work is completed in the Canarsie Tube and L train service is completely restored.

The r46's will continue run on the A until the delivery of r211.

  6. I remember taking a ride home from school on the (J) and this MTA train operator told me that the R179 5 car sets are EXCLUSIVELY for the (A) because they tried to use R160's in the past

Sent from my SM-G386T using TapatalkSo if there are any left over R46's then I suggest putting them on the (C)

I doubt there will be leftover r46's. Those 5 car sets of r179's would replace the r32s and r68s that are on the A. Plus, more trains are needed on the A due to increased ridership.

  7. If the r32's can't run on the G, then the most logical option would be the B. Many of you mentioned this in previous posts. The B is a part time line, so the r32's can be stored during the weekends and if there are any issues on the sixth avenue line, then the r32's can be rerouted on the Q to 96th Street.

  8. Those spare cars from the (L) won't be enough as other lines aside from the (J)(M)(Z) will have increased service. The 32's will be needed for that and to remain as a spare fleet until the 211's come in.

In that case, the r32's should be used on the G in addition to its current fleet of r68's and r46's.

  9. The r179's need to go to the A,C,J and Z.

As for the r32's, we just have to wait and see what's going to happen with the L train shutdown in 2019.

Keep in mind that the L will use less cars once the Canarsie Tube is closed, so those spare cars can be used on the J,M and Z.

I wouldn't be surprised if the r32's aren't needed after all when the Canarsie Tube is closed.

  10. Hi, I'm new in the forum. I've been reading many of the posts in regards to the r179. I'm very eager to see these cars in service already.

As por extending the C past Euclid Avenue, I think it's an excellent idea. The C used to go to the Rockaways in the 80's early 90's and Leffert Blvd is only a few stops after Euclid Avenue. Therefore, the C should be extended to Leffert Blvd, while the A should run to both sides of the Rockaways. There is a need of more A trains in the Rockaways.
