Out of curiosity do MTA fare boxes accept dollar coins? For those paying in cash, dollar coins would be more manageable.

Also, with the bus redesigns introducing new transfer opportunities, with OMNY, should the MTA

    • Add a 2nd free transfer?
    • Unlimited timed transfers (within 2 hours, etc)?
    • Charge $0.25 per transfer after the first free transfer?
    • (other) _________________________?

I think unlimited free transfers within a time frame (2-3 hours) would be the best option, it allows people who take trips with multiple transfers to use one fare and not have to pay double the fare to get to where they need to go.

IIRC MUNI allows unlimited free transfers if you tap once between 8:30 PM and 5 AM so that is something the (MTA) could look into as well so that people taking longer trips at night don’t have to pay another fare because the card transfer window timed out, especially with the long headways at night.

Its mostly there for accessibility purposes as Essex Street is not ADA accessible. It does get decent ridership outside of the disabled so I wouldn’t assume the feasibility of a route by just looking at a map.

Agreed, one Essex Street becomes ADA accessible you can say goodbye to the B39.

  3. Talking about the skipping patterns on the Port Washington Branch, why is peak service on the line west of Bayside (and to an extent west of Great Neck) so poor? Frequencies are often less than off peak frequencies with trains often being 45 minutes to an hour apart. Do they want those riders to take the QM3 or something? (Even though the (MTA)wants to eliminate it in the queens bus redesign)

Is CP depot having coverage issues?  I've seen numerous afternoon runs be cancelled this week along the QM2/20 lines and it's leading to some crappy wait times with sometimes little lead time before they announce the cancellation.

Drivers are calling out across the board... Comes and goes... Supposedly COVID related.

Feels like every transit agency is having shortages due to the new COVID strain. My college town's transit agency (TCAT) just cut all service past 8:30 PM (Service normally ends between 1-2 AM every day except for Sunday) and reduced service on a lot of others due to the bus driver shortage. Guessing the (MTA) is experiencing something similar.

I agree, but at the same time, I'm not of the belief that it would deter as many people as you may think.  They need to redesign the turnstiles AND the gate. I think more people go through the gate than anything else, so if you redesign the turnstile, one person may pay, open the gate and then let everyone else that doesn't want to pay walk through.  As I said though, redesigning and implementing new turnstiles for ~472 stations... That money has to come from somewhere.

I think for now they should focus on ramped up enforcement.

I remember the times when the gates were used for emergency/accessibility only and would sound a alarm when you pushed it. IMO a wider fare gate should be constructed for wheelchair/strollers/luggage/etc... and the emergency gate should get rid of in its entirety. In an emergency, there should be a button (probably in the station master's office) to open all the fare gates to make it easier for people to exit the station.

BART is the perfect example of this:

Today at High street I seen an R179 in the station where one car had all of its lights shut off while the rest of the train had all its lights turned on.

It was on the N/B track while I saw it on an S/B train.

Seen on twitter an train was removed from service due to mechanical problem at High Street around the time I passed though there, wonder what happened to that particular train that caused a single car to lose its lights.

A little bit unrelated but it kinda reminded me of something I observed around the Thanksgiving holiday season.

Around half of the trains I rode during that time period, the first car was blocked off to passengers (Doors were closed on the first car while the rest of the train was open). Does anyone know why the (MTA) did that on some trains?

Good for them, but that's not necessarily because of so much more ridership at those two stations. The big stop outside of Fordham has always been Botanical Garden and so many people go there during the warm weather months esp. that those trains were becoming packed.

Don’t forget the holiday train show. Metro North should definitely add service to that station during an event like that since the trains get packed. NWP trips operate half hourly most of the time with one train stopping at all stops in the Bronx while the other just stops at Fordham. The other should definitely make a stop at Botanical Garden imo so service is half-hourly.

No it doesn't make any sense... same thing with the local trains skipping every other stations on the main line

LIRR is still stuck in the antiquated mentality of Penn Station - Suburb travel only, screw intermediate riders, or anyone else not traveling into Penn Station

Another good example is the St. Albans station I mentioned on here before. One train every 2 hours on weekends while the other Babylon trains fly by that station. (Service on the branch is every 30 minutes).

I know during the recent nova delivery that Castleton was scratched off the list to getting those buses. Before that, it was around 20. Was it to accommodate more passengers to the Amazon Center on the S40/90 Limited?

It might’ve been to replace the buses lost in hurricane ida but since they got the older novas from queens (and I think the Bronx) the (MTA) probably called it a day and decided to just keep the older novas from the other boroughs at Castleton.

Also since Castleton is more prone to flood damage I don’t think the (MTA) wants to give any new buses to Castleton for a while since they don’t want to loose new buses due to a natural disaster.

I’m not 100% sure, I could be wrong but this is my guess.

Your second paragraph is spot on. A camera is good for identifying a perpetrator after a crime or people who might be assembling prior to committing a crime. Law enforcement personnel on the scene is a better deterrent. Problem is that you have to pay those people. Look no further than the red light camera program. Cost benefits.

As to your first point. The (MTA) doesn’t want to place large orders for equipment with any one manufacturer. Any delays or faulty equipment leaves them high and dry. Remember the faulty trucks on the subway cars or the Grumman Flxible bus fiasco ? Relying on a sole source is really rolling the dice, IMO. My opinion. Carry on.

Exactly, Look at whats happening with the 7000s in DC. The WMATA wanted to replace all of their older subway cars with one new car type but when the 7000s had to be pulled from service due to various issues, they retired so many older cars that there aren't enough cars to obtain normal levels of service, which make most lines operate every 12-20 minutes instead of every 6-12 minutes. That's why it's better to do so in batches so if issues arise and a particular fleet has to be pulled from service, it doesn't have catastrophic effects on service levels.

Fwiw I wonder if the set on that train will be oos permanently cause of criminal investigation/trial etc

It might be for the duration of the investigation but it’ll probably be put back into service, most likely with the car (or set) renumbered. (unless the r211s start to get delivered before that, then they will probably be the first cars to retire.)

An open gangway train is much much easier for police officers to patrol thanks to the open sight lines throughout the whole set.

Also since the T/O is in the first set while the C/O is usually in the second set of the train, you can easily get to a staff member on the train with an open gangway train.

    Trains Rerouted

    (F) trains are running along the M in both directions between 47-50 Sts-Rockefeller Ctr and Queens Plaza.

Our crews are currently conducting an investigation at 21 St-Queensbridge.

There is no (F) service at 57 St, Lexington Av/63 St or 21 St-Queensbridge.

For service to/from Lexington Av/63 St, take the (Q) train.

For service to/from 57 St, use the nearby 47-50 Sts-Rockefeller Ctr station.

For service to/from Roosevelt Island, use Q102 bus or see buses near you at bustime.mta.info.

See a station agent to request a free courtesy pass for alternate subway/bus service.

    Posted: 04/14/2022 01:02AM

Idk how the Q102 bus suggestion was useful saying the the Q102 ends service between 12-1 AM depending on the direction so you can’t really use that.

It’s nice seeing Nova LFS Hybrids and New Flyer XDE40’s on the M66 and M72. Since when did they run those hybrids on those lines?

IIRC the OG and NG hybrods couldn't run on those routes due to the clearance on the 65th Street Transverse right?

  16. I know that people are trying their best to avoid the subway due to the recent events however for people who have no choice but to take the subway do you think people would avoid the lines that run with R46's and r68/68A's due to their safety flaws. I'm talking about people trying to stay away from the (B)(D)(N)(Q)(W) and to an extent the (A)(C) lines and using nearby services that don't use those cars if they can avoid it.

  17. Given the overcrowding I wouldn’t be surprised if some bay ridge residents decided to take the Sim1/7/10/11 buses to the first stop in Staten Island and backtrack to bay ridge with the S79. Especially since you can’t get on the x27/37, x28/38 if you’re trying to get on at some of the last stops in Manhattan.

So the option order for NYCTA don't have that (#1607-1629+ #1587-1606)? It's interesting that the MTA had spec'd the NYCTA units differently than the MTA bus company units. They haven't done that with earlier bus orders with the possible exception of the 2015-16 New Flyer XD60 artics #5364-5438, although they were of a different vintage than the other orders.

The 2014-2015 xd40s have different seat types at (MTA) Bus vs NYCT.
