When is your test?
I think someone mentioned there was a S&D test on December 14th, I don't know if that was the one they were in though

Mine took around 2 weeks. I gave them W-2, tax documents and earning statement from social security office. It might say consider after they finish the background check but don't worry too much about it. They will likely contact you if there is an issue.
do you have to pay for W2s from social security office or is it free?

The January class is probably full now, if there's a February class you will probably get contacted in December/January for background and physical

Not sure how many people on here were in the S&D overview but damn. New respect for those that passed, finished creating all my cards and spent the whole evening trying to memorize the first 6 definitions and feel like I’m not getting anywhere.
placing it verbatim is the struggle. Highly discouraged right now, feel like I wasted a day of studying time.
I never did more then like 4 definitions a day, maybe start with signals, if you do stop signal and restricting before you know it you got about 15 down in a matter of 30 min, just a little confidence boost lol. but keep at it I felt like that when I started too, you got 5 weeks use all the time you can to study
Good luck!

I wanted to ask what was the estimated time frame after passing your s&d exam do you get called to the academy, given you pass background, PE and all others in between? I have a newborn at home and wanted to scale out a time frame and get everything i need to together (babysitter, doc appointments, etc.) before things really speed up and go into motion.
as for the index card studying, for those that passed the s&d how many did you guys study? per-day/week/hours? I was planning on creating the cards and studying 10 signals, 5 definitions using any downtime i can to review them per-day at work and while traveling to work, with the kid at home ill be lucky to get a glance at it to really drill it in my head.
cheers.
hey
There isn't any set time frame when you get called for the class, just whenever they have a schedule, but right now it seems really backed up some people passed in May and still waiting.
As for studying I did about 7-10 definitions/signals a day and about 3-4 hours a day every day.

@snoopys16 did one of the hr said that? If so, did they say anything about having classes for other positions?
it was one of the transportation managers, they didn't say anything about other positions though

Thanks for the tips guys. Really appreciate it. Got to finish up the index cards today and study my ass off.
I just wrote out my index cards as I went, every night I would write out like 10 to study the next day, instead of writing all 200+ in one night

yes indications verbatim too

how is the studying going for anyone that was at overview on the 10th? I've been using flash cards and writing out the definitions, it's working well for me

Question for any AC’s who have been through the whole process:
How long after passing the s&d did it take for sterling to contact you regarding your background check?? Has been 2 months since I passed the test still nothing...
I was at the S&D overview yesterday, and they said that they don't have any dates when classes will start yet for 2019. and when I was at open house a few weeks ago I think they mentioned they don't do background checks or drug test until they have class dates

Went to the open house today. According to them the next class probably won’t be until 2019. We were told the S&D overview is Sept 10. Then 5 weeks from then the test would be Oct 15. They weren’t sure of when the next class was.
hey Sho you hear anything yet?

Has anyone that attended and passed all tests from the August 21 open house received any additional info since that day?
that's funny I was just about to ask this question. I attended open house on 21st and passed everything and still didn't hear back, they said S&D overview would be September 10 so we should hear something soon

The interview at the open house is nothing to worry about. They go over your resume with you, asking some basic questions about your experience. They are trying to make sure that you actually have the experience they are looking for (cash handling & customer service).
Once you pass the Signals & Definitions there will be another, slightly more difficult interview. This interview is conducted by two transportation managers (former conductors), and they'll ask you scenario based questions, to see how you would react. Obviously you have not been trained by the railroad yet, but that is the point...they want to see what your natural instincts are. So for example, they asked me something like "You are working a train from Penn Station and a Knicks game just ended at MSG. The train is full of rowdy fans, and a group of guys are refusing to give you their tickets. What do you do?". I said something like "I would politely ask for their tickets again, and if they continue to refuse, I would excuse myself and ask another coworker on the train for further assistance." I had no idea what the real policy or procedure was, I just went with what I had previously seen riding on the trains as a passenger, and my customer service training from other jobs.
Thank you for the info!! hopefully the open house goes good then I'll start studying like crazy for the S&D test
