  1. According to the FastForward Plan, I would assume that there is a chance (C) will run fully with 8car R179 and (A) will get 10car R179 + R211 because of the CBTC implementation in the first five year. Then (J) will have R32 back plus some R160+R143. I am just not sure about (G), because MTA could have 4 car R160 for the (G) or make it full length.

You obviously are saying that just because. Just curious, do you ride the line from Brooklyn to Manhattan in the AM?

And keep in mind that the (C) being full length isn’t just extra capacity. It’s also basically a slight increase in service as well. For example, the (C) uses 144 cars (18 trainsets of eight car trains). You add an extra 36 cars (four trains of eight car trains) and that’s a slight increase from 10 minute headways to 7.5 minute headways.

You are saying Capacity V.S. Frequency. MTA won't let you have both at the same time. Its better to have more trains(freq) with R179 although MTA needs more crews for that.

Have you taken the C to any station along CPW??

The C gets really crowded especially during the weekends, when there's no B trains running and 81st street is always packed during the daytime (weekdays and weekends).

I take (A)  from Broadway Junction to 145 st at 8AM and and the other way at 6PM almost every weekday. I agree that 81st st is packed sometimes because of the museum, But I dont agree other stations in CPW are packed from what I observed. I do think MTA needs to have more trains to run CPW local during the weekend while (B) is not running at that time. Or they can just use R46 on the weekend.

    (C) ridership has been amping up lately and sometimes, even on non rush hour runs, the trains can be packed. It may have been good before as a 4 car set, but you can't sing a song with Barney The Purple Dinosaur to ignore that the (C) will need at least some 8 car sets to handle higher rider numbers for gods sake.

I mean (C)  with 8 car sets is good enough now.

Storm doors are required to be locked on 67 foot cars and up due to the swing of the cars when navigating tight corners and switches, and they are. 46, 68, and 68A doors are locked, as are the storm doors on the BMT Standards when they are used for Museum services, but from my understanding can be opened by the crew in an emergency. There's no rule requiring their locking on shorter cars, and I think until recently, it was not illegal to move between cars that way (hence the installation of pantograph gates on the 40 Slants. Hell, back 40 years ago before air conditioning, storm doors were clipped open to improve airflow in the cars.

The only reason I see for this rule (it being illegal to pass between cars using the storm doors in the absence of an emergency) being implemented in our time is the lawsuit happy nature of our society. Back in the day, if you f**ked up and injured yourself or died, it was understood that you were at fault. Nowadays, every idiot around the corner is trying to make a quick buck, and will sue anyone and anything for whatever they can get.

There were also several deadly incidents between the cars in the last December.

I doubt that the J will get extended, since there's always issues along 4th Avenue/Dekalb Avenue, especially during the evenings. I think the G will get the 8 car r160's with the r211's. Let's see what happens.

I dont think 4th Ave can handle more cars.

Just regular station rehabilitation, the MTA is now accepting the "close the whole station" method because renovation will be faster, such as 111th Street on the (J).

I think the whole station closure is due to the critical conditions at 111th st.

Folks.....ya'll gotta realize that the R179s aren't the ONLY TRAINS that have had issues when they were brand new.....

R142s had similar problems when they were being delivered...it took them years(almost 10 years to be precise) to work out the problems, and now they are the most reliable NTTs in the IRT. R62As(or R62s, I forgot which ones) also had problems when they were brand new. Same for the R46s and some of the other subway cars in the fleet.

Everything has their own issues when they are brand new out of the game......the R142s did, the R143s did, and the R160s did, and a bunch of other subway car fleets did. The R179s are not exempt from that.

The thing is the manufactures hasn't gain any experiences from the past especially R179 is only a newer version of R160. If you take closer look of the interior of R179, there are lots of things that they should have them done better.

The (Z) program was just added from the R160/R143’s to the 179s. The (Z) program is the only program on the Jamaica line the Spells out EXPRESS as opposed to the older program that reads “JAMAICA EXP”

They should fix the glitch of showing (G) on the LCD on some sets of cars.
