I also heard that they are adding a pedestrian crossover so it could be that (I just hope it isn't some cage-looking structure).

Could very well be if they are working on the middle platform. Pretty much anything to make Chambers Street look nicer would be a welcome change of scenery

Question: What is the MTA doing with the middle platform, according to this video by L Train Productions TM?

According to the sign at the end of the video on the mezzanine, it's likely related to adding elevators to Chambers Street. It seems like a side effect of that project is that Chambers is also receiving a facelift, at least to some degree. Well-needed, IMO

IMO the NTTs should have gotten them rather than the R46’s and R62A’s...

If you're referring to the LED lights and stanchions, a lot of the R160s on the (E)(F)(M)(R) (as well as the ones that were running on the (C)) have been getting the whole deal–stanchions, LED lights, and floor mats. I've also seen a number of R142s with yellow stanchions (not looped), as well as the LED lights (can't remember if they've gotten floor mats or not).

  4. I saw a whole bunch of 32s on the (C) today - I ended up riding a R160 down from 125 St, and boy, I can't wait for the 179s to begin service on the (A). That express is quite a nice ride on a NTT (the particular 160 I was on had an almost perfect ride, with nearly no bumps!), even with the timers after 86 St. I also saw those 179s out on the (C), and was able to catch a video of one of the sets flying into 42 St (Not sure what the first four cars were but the last four were 3186-3189). All I can say is that the 32s are a great fit on the express, and so it's a treat to see the occasional set on the (A), and this weekend's service change meant that many express R32s were to be had. The (A) and (C) are truly the best for variety right now!

There's another cool photo (in East 180th St shop for the introductory press conference I believe...) of 7211-7220 signed up for the (6) and the train is literally spotless.

Got a link somewhere? Or something to look up that might help one find it?

    Hopefully it’s just that...chatter

Sadly it might be true, as Kawasaki just faces a lot of competition at home in Japan. There are six major rolling stock manufacturers in Japan, so it's quite a saturated market (Kawasaki, Hitachi, J-TREC, Kinki Sharyo, Niigata Transys, and Nippon Sharyo, just based off a quick skim of Wikipedia)

Another theory is that this was the 42 set that is being used for the speed unit or w/e it's called, testing out timers to see where speeds could be improved.

Could have been the S.P.E.E.D. unit, as I noticed the 8th Avenue Line seemed suspiciously absent from the list of changes they've settled upon for speed limit increases (looking at you, southbound Central Park West express after 86th Street)

I’ve rode in them and passengers alike know that some of those cars were on another line previously and reference them as “hand-me-downs”

I don't even get how some of the conversion cars still have like dirt smears and whatnot from the (6). It boggles my mind that they wouldn't have at least gotten a nice power wash or something in the process of moving them onto the (7)

    So it is likely both.

I also think there's at least some tint to the windows since the factory-new LCDs also seem a bit darker, but are in fine condition compared to the range of what you find (perfect to just broken outright) on the R142A conversion cars

Saw three sets of R179s on the (C) today.

Yup, I hung around 86th and was talking with someone who rode one set, and we saw two other sets arrive heading uptown to end their runs. Glad to see the 179s back in action on the (C):D

Heres the thing,  the 32s seats aren't heated on purpose.  They were just designed to have both the door motors and heaters placed there while the 179s were purposely designed to have heated seats.

Really? I thought they just moved the heaters for the cars back under the seats.

Running SMEE's in service on the (L) line wouldn't make sense, without wayside signals they would have to go real slow for safety reasons, also would CBTC equipped trains would even be able to "see" an SMEE in front of it? Could be disastrous if an SMEE went BIE in the underwater tubes and the CBTC system doesn't know the train is there..

I think the signals default to some sort of manual operation if a non-CBTC train is present. That's why non-CBTC trains on the (L) cause so many headaches, since due to the lack of a redundant block system like the (7), trains have to become much further apart for safety.

Look out the front of the train I think the tunnel shifts just a bit so the track has to

which at least anecdotally supports that.

Thanks for the info! That kink in the tube just drives me nuts whenever I take the (7), and it didn't seem to have an obvious purpose for existing.

If it's what I'm thinking of, it has to do with the street grids in queens not being aligned with manhattan.

I don't think so. There's a pretty gentle curve that would be the one just outside of Vernon-Jackson, but the one I'm talking about is before that. It's a very small S-curve, and it goes just a slight amount to the right from the tunnel's path up to that point.

Wouldn't 3010 - 3019 have enter service to do the 30 day passenger test?

Exactly what I was thinking when I read that. Wouldn't the 30-day passenger test imply 3010-3019 would be running in service as to, y'know, complete said test?

Someone made a mockup of the R262 and it looks like something out of a star wars movie 🤣

I'm going to assume the actual R262 will look something like a hybrid of the design features of the R142/As and the R211s. It seems the MTA has pretty much solidified NTT car design, even with cars like the R211 taking on at least a bit of a changed design from the R142/As and R188s, and R143s, R160s, and R179s.

    Yes, though the timeline is...unclear.

Great! I just tweeted @NYCT_Subway on Twitter to ask about it - I've noticed they're pretty good about just answering questions (I know someone who got an answer about what lights they use in the tunnels – changing to LEDs – and also what some bars on the tracks were at 7 Av on the (F)(G) – Culver CBTC equipment) about more technical aspects of the system. If they give some timeline I'll be sure to post the response here.

New countdown indication for GT signals is under test right now — idea is that by telling ops when signals will clear, they’ll approach GTs (esp 1 shots) less cautiously. First install is on the n/b express at Barclays. Video:

Wow! That legitimately looks like it could help with T/Os being too slow near timers to avoid tripping them. Is this planned to be rolled out across the system?

  19. Quick question: you all know that little bend in the Steinway Tubes, about 3/4 of the way from Grand Central to Vernon-Jackson? Is there any reason they had to build the tunnel with that little segment, or is it just a weird oddity from construction? I ask because I've noticed now every (7) seems to take it at 35+ mph, sending the whole car flying from side to side. It's quite the doozy of a bump, that's for sure...

R42's are staying for a good while, they won't be going anywhere.

As I understood it, really nothing is getting retired until the R211s begin arriving, as increased demand and car shortages have made it necessary to keep any and all cars they can run on the B division in service.

These lists do exist you know.

I know, that's what I've looked at to see where the passenger car contract orders fit in with the other contract orders. I still wonder why they've started having gaps in the contract orders...maybe things were drafted and then shelved so they just move on? Seems weird that they wouldn't just sequentially number contracts.
