What do you mean by ""if people can afford it?"

This goes to all you schoolers: Does it mean you can afford to lose classroom instruction?  Does your guardian (mommy/daddy/grandma/whoever) know you're cutting class?

As a taxpayer whose taxes goes to YOUR classroom instruction, I want you and everyone else present for all your classes.  No cutting class!  You can ride the train after school!

I meant exactly what I said.

If you can afford it. Obviously, a calculated decision. Truancy cops exist.

I'm not gonna be a hypocrite either. I did it. But I knew when I could. Good grades and good attendance DOES afford you one day, once in a while. At no consequence.

So long as you don't make it a habit.

Classroom learning is important, but I'm not gonna pretend there wasn't value in me learning the city. Lived experience will always trump books. Yes, I could have kept it to only after school but I'd also be seeing the same thing every day. Also, funnily enough, the subways were less safe after school. Even as a teen, I thought about the variables. Comes with the desire to have as little trouble come my way as possible.

If it can be avoided, avoid it. If you know an action will lead to negative consequences, avoid it.

Lastly, some of us ain't have time after school.

Calculated decision. My taxes also go to their instruction. Their instruction sucks. Advocate for improving that before criticizing me. I was definitely one of the youth it was not, and is still not, designed for.

    Actions have consequences.

    ---------------

And to the person who brought up subway surfing (because why not just go the whole damn mile no matter how unrelated it is):

You can NEVER afford to risk your life. There will be another day of school.  There will be another day of work. You don't get another life. Why the hell would you think "if you can afford it" would apply there? I swear this community likes making fire where there is none.

The people who do this do not give a damn about their life anyway. This includes people who be up in really high places. They do NOT care. You talking ain't gonna do it. Only near death or seeing someone they know die. And sadly, for some, even that ain't enough.

I know the dude who climbed to the top of One WTC back when it was nearly complete. The reason he didn't go to jail was a case of right person, right time.

(Personally, I think he's a fine example of wasted resources. Went to Paris, something he ahould have missed and someone else gone, and he spent more time CLIMBING SHIT than the work we were there to do. Pissed me off. Anywho, the reason he was there was because the very person who kept him out of prison thought the experience would be good for him. He was my first example of a person who, no matter what you do, will not change. It was on the Petite Centure where a few of us learned he doesn't care of he lives or dies. I haven't heard from him in years but I occasionally look up his name.

Last I saw? He was still "getting caught" on the tops of buildings.)

He, himself has said, that he doesn't care about his life. I've met other urban explorers personally and it's usually the same. It's the situations they put themselves in that make them feel alive. Free. Anything else may as well be prison.

And you wanna know why this guy got caught coming down from One WTC? It was on purpose. He wanted to get caught. So he did. He wanted people to know he did it. He could have walked right out, no consequence, and CHOSE not to.

Choice. Funny how we all have that.

And I ain't gonna hold you, if a person somehow thinks surfing the trains is a good idea, school is a waste on them anyway.

In closing: Don't make this bigger than it is. For some of us, one day was definitely inconsequential. Same goes for work.

If you can afford it. Actions have consequences. And you'd better be prepared to face them.

And I laugh in the face of people thinking about cutting school/work for a train that ain’t ready yet.

If people can afford to do it, why do you care?

    Their time. Their choice.

The way Railfans have been acting the last couple of years, why would they put that info up? Just so that more of these losers could come and jack these trains up? Come on now.

You act like it's gonna make a difference. Word spreads lol

  4. Oh. My. Genm.

Can we PLEASE drop this insipid ass discussion?

I lost three years of my life going through the last couple pages and it's a fine example of why I'm barely here anymore. I get there ain't much to talk about for the next few months but please, just PLEASE drop this.

Yall have been rehashing the SAME things for months. MONTHS.

(A)(B)(C)(D) are the only logical places to expect these cars to go first because CBTC. (A) and (C) of course and (B)(D) in case of reroutes. And, you know, Sixth Avenue CBTC will naturally happen after. Why do we keep debating this.

I would NOT be surprised if some of y'all drove @Kamen Rider to drink because....just.....oh my Genm.

    ...........

Breathe Dex. Just breath. Just be happy this ain't the GTAVI subreddit....

  5. I notice VG8 keeps mentioning how they got billions of funding when the system as a whole has been losing money since 1941.

No amount of cash is gonna save that. Secondly, just like with noticeable inflation in our stores after 4 trillion was created from nothing during the pandemic, that long period of free rides was eventually gone come back and bite us. Secondly, we aren't back to full ridership and Congestion Pricing (which is law and happening whether people like it or not) hasn't come online yet. The MTA has to be bleeding WAY more cash than usual.

Public transit isn't supposed to make money anyway. My broke ass would happily pay a sales tax of 10% if it meant the MTA getting what it needs to stay afloat.

Alternatively, we could implode it and create something new from the ashes....

Please excuse me. I'm thinking before waking up completely lol

I can personally confirm that lol. I find that adjusting interior mirrors to check out women is just a little too creepy for my liking.

That's not creepy. It's just checking out women. No one was touched, harassed, or stalked. I'd be shocked if our lady B/O's aren't doing the same.

    Ah. That makes more sense.

Recently, I’ve learned that broadway might not be able to handle 15 TPH (what I propose when we axe the (W) ). I feel like broadway should either receive CBTC or it should receive a switches upgrade. My take. Carry on.

It's not a matter of if, but when. Broadway is probably the only trunk that would see real improvements with CBTC, moreso if done around the same time as 6th Avenue and 4th Avenue (iirc, Brighton, and maybe Astoria, are in this decade's plans).

My main concern is the elimination of the QM3, yes it obviously has lower ridership than most other express bus routes in Queens but it is still used by a good chunk of riders, in 2019, the QM3 had a daily ridership of 104 riders, which is 17.33 riders per bus, which isn't filling close to filling a bus but it's proof that people ride it, the daily ridership did drop to 46 riders in 2020 but that was due to Covid-19. I think QM3's ridership can be boosted if more trips are added, and have it operate to/from downtown Manhattan, where the Port Washington Branch and the (7)train can not serve. This could work out cause it'd be a one trip ride from Little Neck to Downtown Manhattan with no transfers needed. In another note I propose an off-peak and weekend Express bus fare of $4.75, the cheaper fare would get more people to ride the Express buses in general during the hours less people are riding it.

I'm just here to ask if your name is a JoJo reference.

It's safe to say if they do fill in the blanks for Queens, they'll do the same for Brooklyn. 65 St crosstown, B41 Bergen Beach branch getting it's own designation. Maybe a through Ocean Av bus?

You know what's funny? I moved a few blocks away from 62nd/New Utrecht last July and the first thing I said was, "You know what? 65th street could use a bus."

I hope it gets one and it runs 24/7 because last weekends GOs for the D and N made getting home at night longer than it needed to be. The B9 came in clutch, but catching the first eastbound bus was luck.

  10. I don't understand the pushback against stop removals. It's usually one of the first things that comes up when this type of discussion comes up. And you'd be surprised how often transit comes up lol

(Which is crazy considering most of the people I talk to are completely unwashed to the ins and outs of transit, or barely even think about it outside of their day to day)

  11. 19 hours ago, Fan Railer said:

This is an embarrassment. If I didn't know any better, I'd say that this was United Airlines lol. The Transit Museum should be proud of the way their hired muscle shoved people around on the train today. Completely unprofessional.

It's Allied Universal. What do you expect? Quality?

The community needs to change that rule because just like this current situation just imagine this happens again and the NGs are scrapped like what else are you giving Manhattanville

So they have to sacrifice cleaner air because of MTA operations? The MTA knows this exists and therefore should already plan for such a thing. To say the neighborhood should sacrifice clean air is ridiculous.

And the phrase "It's the MTA" ain't a defense.

The minute the mindset changes  for the majority of the people who ride the system then the minute the system can evolve..

    There's your solution..

They are getting things in place so lets see how it goes..

Me ill be retired in five years (god willing) so maybe ill see it maybe i wont..

Either way it will be interesting

Funny you say that because I was ear hustling a conversation on the last R42 trip where there was a guy who worked in a department I can't remember. It was on the tech side, but he said that after Byford left it would take, at minimum, 3 months for things to start sliding back to normal.

If Cipriano can continue the change, then yay. But I'll be honest, I'm not confident. In Cuomo or the next Mayor (two terrible options imo) to allow the necessary changes to happen.

I need to see a good sign within the next year or so for that to change. And Rider mindset won't change until the organizations mindset does and results are even more visible.

Honestly, they need to do like London and produce a series that shows people how the system works. And like London, produce a new one every few years.

Six 45-minute episodes every 5 years or so. Each episode focusing on a different aspect. Fares and enforcement, why delays happen, workers on their daily routines, response to emergency situations, and maintenance, and what developments are going on to improve. People are out here still thinking 2.75 is a high fare (until the learn what the true fare is once you remove subsidy).

Visual media like that and advertising things like high frequency services are a start.

Until the sole crew member gets sick, is a crime victim, or a blackout occurs, and the (MTA) gets sued in a court of law. If the agency loses the suit all taxpayers end up paying. Just thought I'd bring that point out.  They used to have a class in RTO called Panic and Evacuation . Something to think about that's not so obvious. Carry on.

You people REALLY act like NYC is the only place with these issues. If other cities could solve it, so can we. This right here is why the MTA cannot reduce costs. Y'all find every excuse to cost them money.

....While at the same time expecting them to spend less. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

Ever since at least 1966, the Union has been an impediment to proper improvements and a MASSIVE money sink. And after reading Last Subway, I am absolutely sure things need to change. It's way worse than people think. I say this because you gave a VERY Samuelson answer and I hate that guy.

And this is what I hate about NYC (and these forums tbh). People LOVE to say what we can't do but almost never propose a solution to the issue. It's just, "Oh, we can't do it for xyz reason and instead of solving it, we'll just leave it be." It's disgusting.

How about we actually post solutions for once?

How can we do it? What reworks need to happen? I feel like under Byford and Tomlin, we would have found a way. Those are the types of minds we need.

  15. You know, it's a good thing the R211 has that third screen. It could be used for cameras to aid door operation.

Oh wait. That's exactly what it's for.

The MTA is definitely thinking about this and the R211 will contain these proper OPTO provisions. Safety? You don't even need to stick you head out of the cab. Hoping they try it out.

Not really. OMNY has been in the works for years as well.

    19 hours ago, bobtehpanda said:

They physically started handing out OMNY in 2019 vs today. They started physically handing out MetroCard in 93, a full four years before the last turnstiles were installed in '97.

There were the earlier attempts like the PayPass or whatever, but those don't really have anything to do with OMNY itself.

And let's not forget, it was first proposed in 1983. Which means it took about 14 years for Metrocard to be fully implemented.

OMNY started planning in 2016 iirc so this may be the fastest the MTA has ever moved.

  17. 11 hours ago, bobtehpanda said:

IIRC, OMNY is based on London's Oyster, and Oyster charges all the trips at the end of the/a day rather than at the exact moment at time. They do this because

    • they have zoned fares and when you tap in the charge is the maximum zoned fare, but when you tap out it gets recalculated (this is also how they encourage tap outs, because if you're don't you're taking the L on the fare charge, not them)
    • they have their day cap on fares, so you can only get charged some maximum amount of total fare a day

Systems can go offline or be slower for a variety of reasons, and so waiting for the day allows the system to be reasonably sure that they are charging you the correct fares.

The other thing is that bundling the payments in such a manner allows one to save on transaction fees charged by the payment networks and banks. This isn't unusual, off the top of my head iTunes charges people in largely the same way.

Thank you for explaining this way better than I would have lol
