  1. Folks, a piece of advise.

It is never good when (hypothetically) you are YX and the Line Superintendent (who was a Schoolcar Instructor), the Yard TSS, and the Yard Dispatcher see you not only blow a STOP sign at the crosswalk, but not even slow down.

And it really pisses off said Line Superintendent when you try to make excuses, saying you were rushed.

This is all hypothetical, of course.

  2. Crew Room Lawyer (def) Usually the loudest person in the Crew Room (or on the Forums), a person who hates their job, who gets in trouble for doing things they aren't supposed to, and passes on bad advice to rookies.

To the new people coming down here, some advice, as I was in your shoes once before, and have never forgotten that:

    Avoid the Crew Room Lawyers.

If you have questions about things, find the people who actually know what they're talking about (like @RTOMan).

And as I tell all the rookies I come across, if you see me in passing and need to pick my brain about something, feel free to do so. I don't bite (usually).

It was real and on TOP of that dude tried to lie saying "The Dispt told me to key past the Station"....

So i guess the part of running the home signal and hooking down a stop arm is keying by huh?

That is a failure of comprehension and no way should that person ever move a train in NYCT ever...

And that was in the same week of the other major thing. Those were fun reports to read and assist with...

I guess we can talk about work in here, right?

The platform will humble people REAL QUICK. Please don’t take this job as a joke. A lot of TO’s are on the platform for challenging signals and over running stations. You have to get your rest and stay focus on the task at hand. Get ya money and go home. Don’t listen to crew room lawyers or anyone else. Learn your job. Learn your rules. Learn to read your iron and study your signals and know what to do at each signal. Good luck to everyone coming in and if Yu haven’t got a call yet your time is coming. Please be humble

...and people on the Platform still manage to do stupid shit and get into even more trouble.

In the grand scheme of things, it is a simple job. Show up. Have your equipment. Be courteous. Do what you're supposed to do. The cover-up is worse than the crime.

    Earplugs good. Earbuds bad.

  6. A little over 10 years ago, I started this thread when I started Schoolcar. Look at where I am now, as well as my classmates.

To those waiting, have patience. It will come.

Don't be afraid to ask the questions. It may save your job one day.

    Happy Anniversary TA-18, TA-19, TB-28 and my class, TB-29.

    Good job.

Us as TOs shouldn't NOT put our Partners in a bad position to get on the radio and bang in something Us as TOs should be aware of...

DO not listen to these crew room lawyers on Facebook in these groups to or in the crew room to "Keep it moving" or "Work things out with your partner"..

Do i need to repeat myself?

    Obviously you need to.

Also, being a student does NOT excuse you from not doing the right thing.

    Please people...

    MAKE YOUR SAFTEY STOPS.......

Two incidents involving Collisions where attempting to make a safety stop would have at least shown something was wrong..

    Both In Coney Island Yard...

They are looking to take your handles over these things...

    Also....

    INSPECT YOUR TRAIN PROPERLY!!!!

You are taught a certain way in Schoolcar. Stick to it. Don't take shortcuts.

If you have an incident and I'm the one investigating, I will know that you took a shortcut, and I will know that you are lying.

Yeah there are a lot of nice people in the crewrooms. In schoolcar you definitely have to speak to your classmates and the TSS all the time.

Just avoid the Crew Room Lawyers. They usually have no clue what they are talking about, and are the ones who are getting into trouble.

  11. Congratulations to all the newly hired or ones starting soon. I'll see you out there, preferably in a positive situation. If you see me out there and want to pick my brain, feel free to pull me aside. We were all new down here, and it pisses me off when some employees forget that.

Not to toot my own horn, but if you want a hint of what you're about to expect, peruse this:

I wouldn't exclude the graffiti part, there have been some posts I've seen that involved trains getting tagged. The only difference is that they're being washed off. I really don't understand the wasted effort to go sneak into an area such as a yard, a layup, or whatever and graffiti a train. At the end of the day, the train will end up being taken out of service and go to a yard for a wash.

That's because it's a badge of honour to tag a NYC Subway car. The Eurotrash also come over to bomb the cars and then post it on social media.

  13. 3 months training for the IRT, 5 months for the B Division (if they cut the YX program).

Do you get to pick your division? It depends on Transit's needs. If you get to pick, it starts by list number and works downward.

As for the YX program, it's a joke. It was not done the way it was intended, and the students don't learn properly.

See you new guys out there soon. Please don't make me write reports.

I'm curious how you guys are handling this? Heard about this in the news. Often times you guys show up to assist and are being assaulted...

I keep my head on a swivel, and that's what I tell my people to do.

That's all I can say on here without jeopardizing anything.

    My suggestion..

Anything RTO related regarding signals or track you wait until they give it to you..

Now as another poster said its good for a railfans point of view but for work? No....

    As a former Schoolcar Instructor,

    What @RTOMan says.

Don't worry about learning the system until you start down here.

Snow piled on subway tracks traps Q train riders for over an hour

    By David Meyer                                                                                              February 1, 2021 | 6:39pm | Updated

A "Q" subway train was stuck between the Parkside Avenue stop and the Prospect Park for nearly 2 hours Feb. 1, 2021 because of the heavy snowfall.

Straphangers were stuck on a Q train for nearly 90 minutes Monday afternoon due to snow on above-ground subway tracks in Brooklyn, a rider told The Post.

“We’ve been sitting between Parkside and Prospect Park for an hour and 20 minutes now. There’s no heat in the train, there are 3 people not wearing masks, no sort of ventilation,” Q train rider Rachel Turner said just after 3:30 p.m.

“About 30 minutes ago we were told that the snow had accumulated too much to move forward and that we had gotten permission to move backward back to Parkside to get off, but there’s been no word from anyone since then.”

Transit officials confirmed the service disruption — which halted the last Q train scheduled to cross the Manhattan Bridge before over-ground subways closed down — on Twitter, saying they needed to clear “accumulated snow.”

The train briefly lost power during the wait, the MTA confirmed — leaving Turner and others frigid. The train and its passengers were eventually rerouted back to Parkside Avenue station, Turner said.

She finally exited the train at 3:38 p.m.

With over-ground subways out of commission as of 2 p.m., Turner walked .6-miles to access the next-closest Manhattan-bound train.

An MTA spokesman later blamed the delay on “snow obstructing equipment on the tracks.” An investigation remained underway.

“This was an isolated incident on a day of exceptionally severe weather, and we apologize to our customers for what was a frustrating and disconcerting delay,” MTA rep Shams Tarek said in a statement.

“Preliminary findings are that power was lost for a portion of time during the incident which was related to snow obstructing equipment on the tracks.”

I'm in that picture. Guess which one is me.

By the time I got out of there, the snow drifts were halfway up my thighs. And I'm 6'2".
