  1. I see.

So wait, they're eliminating the N54, right?

Nowhere on the official site is that mentioned. So I assume service on each route every 2 hours (!).

I believe so too, but they only split for a short distance. I think most of the ridership is in Hempstead in Uniondale, no?

But they're using those short-turns to extend the N43 to Hempstead. I guess the eliminated Baldwin service will be used to create the N17 trips.

I didn't think of it that way, I was thinking they were using the short turns to run the N17.

  2. I live a stone's throw from the N2 and I can safely say I have never seen any more than five people on that route at any one time, and the N8 doesn't get much ridership along Dutch Broadway anyway considering almost everyone in Elmont drives or knows someone that does. That ride along the city-county border must be fun, though.

The N8 also doesn't get much ridership because it runs on hourly headways, and it's not timed to make connections to any of the routes it connects to. It's better to walk to Elmont Road to catch the N1 if you're going to/from Queens. If you're coming from Hempstead you have to time your trip well or you're waiting forever for the N8.

Majority leader of the Nassau Legislature, some see him as Mangano's right hand man.

    Oh I see.

Lots of people here at the meeting.

    How's it going so far?

  3. 1) I wonder if they'll reduce N16 service to create the N17 trips. I assume if they didn't mention a headway reduction, it's not going to occur. I assume the N17 will be operating weekdays only like it did before.

They're eliminating the N16 short turns between Roosevelt Field and Hempstead.

N80/81 probably stayed as is because they serve Massapequa and that's where Peter Schmitt lives. :(

    Who's that?

  4. They're facing the same issues that just about every transit agency in the country is facing. Joel is so friggin' certain that things would be sooo much better under the (MTA).

I really don't get it, he's not the only one either. They have all forgotten that the MTA wanted to cut half of Nassau's service on JANUARY FIRST, TWO THOUSAND AND TWELVE. The MTA doesn't think, they just slash.

So true like another rant front or joel rantpower. sometimes strategic restructuring can be a good thing you will hear my rage or my force on the 23rd. bring it NICE I am not scared of no mangano the problem with the MTA is they aren't open minded and unimaginative in a sence they are clueless in suburban routing. However this NICE can go either way good or bad something a certain someone can't understand.

Why do a lot of people act like Mangano is personally running the bus system?

Anyway, I agree with your comment on the MTA. Though they did come up with the N43. The N8, i'm not sure whats going on with that. Its potential is limited ending at Hempstead Turnpike. Basically it goes the Green Acres, serves Dutch Broadway, but goes no where else.

The only one that makes no sense is the taxi guy he will destroy service taxi guys can never be trusted.

Yeah, I don't like the idea of the taxi company owner (whatever) being on a bus committee.

  5. Source: News12.com

(02/17/12) MINEOLA - The operator of Nassau County's recently privatized bus system says it's already facing a multimillion-dollar budget hole and is planning service cuts to fill it.

Veolia Transportation took over Nassau's bus system just over a month ago and changed its name to Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE) Bus. Now, Veolia officials say the system is facing a $7.3 million budget deficit.

To plug the gap, Veolia says it will roll out schedule changes and service cuts in April. Representatives say that no routes will be eliminated, but the less popular ones will see fewer buses, which would mean longer wait times for commuters.

The company did not say which routes will be affected but said that information will be released at planned public meetings on Feb. 22 and 23.

There is some good news: the NICE system is adding express bus service to the city, which could cut commutes by up to 20 minutes. It's also restoring service to Mercy Hospital.

Express bus service to the city? Interesting. Obviously that would've been a conflict of interest for LIB/MTA.

I wonder if they'll revive the N17 or just detour the N16 to pass by the hospital.

  6. Work time comparison:

    FASTRACK 7 hrs x 4 nights = 28 hrs

    Weekend = 53 hrs

With nearly twice the time, why does it appear that less work gets done on the weekend than the overnights?

    More workers, no trains?

BTW did all (1) and (2) trains use the Middle Platform at 34th street as the terminal during Fasttrack?

  7. Remember the ® is not running between appx. 1130pm-5am so it's the (N) running via the Tunnel.

Thanks I forgot to mention the (N). The OP wanted to get to Penn station around 10:30pm though.

Most of the Brighton underwent a huge rehabilitation for 3 years, so I doubt that line will need FASTRACK if the (MTA) maybe even considers doing the program in Brooklyn.

That's true, I only took into account lines close enough and parallel where they could possibly used as alternatives. For instance, if they did the Culver, the Brighton could be used as an alternative, especially for those who get on the bus anyway.

  8. The only, place I can ever see FASTTRACK outside of Manhattan is the Concourse line.

    (D) will have to split at B'way-Laf since the MTA says it runs via 8 Av Lcl. Time to reinstall that switch...

Maybe a bit in South Brooklyn and the UWS. I'm assuming you mean the Jerome Line as well.

    I can see FastTrack for:

    -The Concourse line weeknight FastTrack.

-The Jerome Ave line with an all weekend FastTrack or just weekend Daytime Fast Track.

-Maybe Upper West Side, CPW Broadway lines

    - Brighton, Nostrand, Culver Lines (possibly)

  9. I agree, but don't they spend more money by running both the (2) and the (5) into Manhattan? Normally the latter would be a shuttle requiring only 2 T/Os, I believe, but now it requires more..

The (2) train Crews will be running the (5) trains. Since the 7th ave line is cut short, they're probably breaking even with the amount of trains/crews needed. the "(5)" Trains will really be (2)'s running on the Lex. They're going from Woodlawn to Flatbush Ave. The "(2)'s" are running from Dyre Ave to Penn Station. They could use (1) and (5) crews for that.

Yes the Q train is a good alternative. Thanks. I forgot about that route because I usually sit in the 2 train right until penn station.

But the Q train would require me to get out of the station and walk 1 block and at 11 PM, I'm not sure how safe that is!! But, atleast for this week - i am open to trying this alternative.

Also, since the 5 is going to run late night, I won't have any issues I believe - I will transfer to the 2 at Nevins street(uptown)

The area is fine at night. There is no (2) train service between Penn station and Flatbush Ave. After 10PM.

If you don't want to walk that block, you could :

-Take the (B44) to the Nostrand Ave (A) train Station to Penn Satation.

-Take the (B41) to the Jay Street-Metrotech (A)/ (F) station, take the (A) to Penn Station

-Take the (5) to Atlantic, ® to to Metroech, (A) to Penn Station

-Take the (5) to Grand Central, (S) to Times Square, (1) or (2) to Penn Station.

It's far easier/quicker to just take the (Q) to Herald Square.

  10. What's often thrown about is whether the (N) can handle Astoria by itself at current levels (answer is no, in rush hour anyways). No one seldom brings up whether the (Q) can handle 2Av by itself, I mean it will be the only trunk line that runs by itself N-S in Manhattan.

True, but there are a few factors to consider. The other N-S lines are through lines, the trains on those lines are usually passing through into other boroughs. They have to handle Local and Through Passengers.

The 2nd Ave line will end at 96/125th. And will mostly be "local "passengers in that vicinity. When it first opens it will only go to 72nd street right? The Astoria Line doesn't have another subway line paralleling it, the 2nd Ave line will have the Lex.

  11. And there, the (A) can simply go with the (D) and then (F) down 6th Avenue and the Rutgers tunnel to Jay Street while the (E) can run via 6th Avenue to 2nd Avenue, so that isn't an issue, plus with a transfer to the (1)/ (2) at 59th-CC and most of the other transfers that you would normally have from the (A) anyway (including the (2) at 14th/7th from the 14th/6th (F) station), you likely won't have too much confusion like you did with this round of transfers, especially with the (1) and (2) covering most of the (A) in Manhattan below 59th and (N)/® covering Metrotech.

How do you all think they will handle the switching of the (A)?

In order for the A to use the Rutgers tunnel it has to switch to the local tracks south of 34th street or just north of W4th st. Maybe since it runs local over night anyway it will switch south of 34th. They will then have 3 locals though, (A)(E)(F), I guess with the overnight headways it should be fine.

They may have to cut the (M) to Forest Hills early because it may get too crowded on 6th ave.

  12. The C is bad because it runs only 8 cars (for no reason, unlike the J, L & M whose platforms cannot accomodate trains longer than 8cars) which causes overcrowding the 1st and last car at times, only runs R32's (aside from the summer months) and is the only line to run the R32's.

This statement always baffles me. "Complaining" that the C only has 8 cars is like complaining that the Q79 didn't use articulated buses.

The ride may have made her nauseous, but her reporting did the same to me...

    LOL Hilarious.

  13. I simply think that it is absurd to close a whole segment of a line if you have the luck to have 4 tracks !!!! Red line ( 15 minutes overnight ) and Blue line ( 30 minutes by 1.30 AM to 3.00 AM ) in Chicago have ALWAYS at least 1 track in service !!! Does know the MTA that NY is the city that never sleeps ?

I think it's absurd that people are reacting as if the entire subway is shutting down, and that there isn't another station usually 1 - 3 blocks away.

  14. Q120 - Grant Ave (A) to Green Acres via Conduit Blvd/Aves. Crosstown.

To create a more profitable route with more turnover it could be

Q120 or QB1 = Gateway Center to Green Acres, via Euclid Ave (A) and Conduit Blvd/Aves or Rockaway Blvd and Conduit Ave's

(Q27) - Extend bus to S. Conduit and Springfield Blvd.
