  1. There's worse. There's always things like...........(shudders).....this:

Now hold on while I go barf after seeing this image :)

I think that's gorgeous. I mean, the person who tagged that should be forced to clean it off, but it's still gorgeous.

  2. As of right now, the R179 base order for 290 cars is still behind schedule, and is now expected by August of 2011. The optional order for 50 additional cars is expected to remain on schedule, and is currently set to be awarded by February 2012.

    Why the constant delays?

  3. I have a question, which may be considered weird: since the majority of the R188s will be converted R142As, therefore used, will they be considered used and end their service run sooner than other new cars, or will they be considered brand new? After all, they do have 10+ years in service..

Since the majority of the R188s will not be new cars, probably not. Though lets wait until 2040 to see.

Already they are converting the R142As for the R188. The MTA must be eager to do the contract.

When did you expect them to do it? :)

2012 (or whenever these cars are suppose to come) isn't that far off.

  4. The Siemens units actually give an impression of being faster, probably because of the louder sound... the difference, however, is probably negligable unless you are operating two sets of different propulsion.

Apparently the Alstom/Siemens train was faster than it should be, according to some sources on this forum. I personally have not noticed any difference in speed between the Siemens and Alstom trains when running under normal circumstances. If there is its barely noticeable.

  5. I asking myself.... why didn't the (6) keep their R62A's during the car swap?

The (7) needed them more. Besides, it was a nice upgrade.

When I first heard the (3) were to have R142s originally I was shocked. I thought they changed the plan cause they didn't want new-tech trains running through East New York but then I had to remember that the (3) had their share of getting fresh new trains when R62A's debuted.

Yeah, true. Then again the (4) goes to New Lots late nights and GOs when the (3) doesn't run. So either way R142s will end up there whether it would be the (3) or (4). I was very shocked when I saw pics of R62s on the (3). Back in 2003 when I was starting my railfanning thru the city, I sorta chased/looked out for the R62s on the (3). It was by chance/accident I found one at 96th when I was waiting for a (2).

Moreover, Livonia yard stores NTTs, which are moved along the (3) during rush hour. Plus Crown Heights is just as crappy a neighborhood.

  6. Hem, well I guess it maybe the yard then... that said we will see how Westchester does when they [presumably] get the R62As back. I do hope the R142As that are converted are also fixed up before being sent to the (7).

Ironically theyll probably do better with the 62As.

From my understanding, the R142As will also go through some sort of overhaul (dont quote me on that), so in theory, they should be good as new by the time they hit the (7).

  7. @Rutgers Tube: But why would it run on the LIRR? The LIRR has relatively new DE-30, M7 and M3 and even the older M3-fleet is in pretty good shape. MNRR on the other hand has aging fleet with lots of problems. Plus, the LIRR already gets M9's to replace the M3's before 2015. So why the heck would the LIRR ever need to run an M8?

His entire point was that the only place the M8s would run on LIRR territory is Penn Station. Anything East of where Amtrak trains split from LIRR (Sunnyside Yard for the sake of the argument) will never see a M8.

  8. Im betting my chips on the first or second week of March.Havent heard any problems with them so far and I manage to catch it in stamford last week. Its looking good for the M8.

I am of the opinion that their problems were overblown by the media, coupled with how long it takes a vehicle to travel 4,000 miles.

  9. They screwed up the M8's. Have you seen that front of the M8's? Even the M1's and subway R32's look beautiful compared to that ugly M8 front.

Woah woah woah chill your tits lol everytime something new comes out it's gonna look different then the stuff before and the same can be said about our new Silverliner Vs and people thought they were ugly but once they were out and people saw them they liked them so don't say it sucks until uve seen it in person and have been on and until then shup

1, LMAO @ "chill your tits"

    2. Imagine how ugly the R16/15s were to Low V and R1-9 fans. And lets not get started about the R62s to the redbird fans.

  10. You should move away from subway and learn some rails.

And what sets are you talking about?

This is to replace the M3s LIRR.

M3A MNR to early to tell

No thanks, especially with the M-8s having glitchs.. Why pick them..

The M8s arent in service yet. Pre revenue glitches don't count.

  11. Seems to early to be ordering new designs of cars for LIRR. They still have M7s. Seems to me they could order more M7s instead. Would be more convenient for LIRR?

Bombardier doesn't make the M7s anymore. Even if the M9s look/operate like the M7s, it'll still be a whole new contract.

And it's not too early. Way too many times the (MTA) waited until these cars turned 40 or 50 to retire them (the M1s and the M2s are good examples). For once, they're being proactive in their approach.
