Do the XDE40s at MTV get inspected/maintained at MTV? I have the same question for the Nova HEV at MJQ.. Or when they are due for inspection or road called they go to the depot these buses was originally assigned to?

I have to think at this point those buses are semi-permanently placed there, stickers and regular runs and all. Sort of like the BT&E buses before they got organized by depot.

That should come out of the city's or state's pocket, not the MTA. It's not the transit authority's responsibility for treating mental illness.

This is true, but the flip side of the same coin is that it shouldn't necessarily be the Transit Authority's responsibility for treating the consequences of mental illness, which is sort of what we're talking about here. As a large-scale investment you'd have a hard time convincing me it was a better, more equitable, or more productive use of money than installing ADA access, improving frequencies, repairing stations, etc. It's a moot point given how limited the scope of possible PSD stations is, according to that report (basically everything with platform-edge columns out of the running, so the whole early IRT, and then everything elevated for weight), but sort of an interesting question to consider.

  3. Generally speaking, I don't really understand why this is an essential problem now as opposed to any other point in the subway's history. Nothing against PSDs, but seems like a better use of money would be investing in social services and policing that would together reduce the number of people ending up on the tracks in the first place.

  4. Great posts. To this day, I think in the non-railfan world – and among a younger audience – it's really only "The Lex" which remains in common use. Some South Brooklynites still say Brighton, but I never hear anybody ever say Sea Beach.

I didn't expect them to keep the covid P/R code on the 75xx's.

I also figured that the sticker situation is rather a joke. Another unit that had this gag is 5869. That unit has a WF sticker as well. I don't know how many buses have the wrong stickers on them, but so far with 6193, that makes it 4 buses I counted that had different stickers, then the depot it is assigned to.

I'm pretty sure they deleted that code on the vast majority of buses to make it MASK REQUIRED only, but my guess is that the 75xx buses with the different signs aren't updated as often. Kind of like how the TwinVision RTSes kept prehistoric codes for years and years (M14 via Ave A, M14 via Ave C etc.).

Some stickers probably wasn't seen at that time. 4594 still has the MHV logo after its stay there due to the HEV problems, Flatbush loaned that one as a helping hand.

Yeah although that bus was actually in service. The MQ stickers I think are just people playing around.

  6. TA totally screwed up the messaging/closures for the 8 Ave Fasttrack last night. Saw an entire platform of people waiting for the ACE on W4 upper N/B while all the service was running on W4 lower. Who even knows how long they were there for, since they only taped off the S/B side. Pretty lazy imo.

I believe SC and CP already have block heater cords for their buses so they start easier in cold weather, so refitting these depots to electric operation should be easy considering how those depots are setup.

TA should never buy CNG buses ever again, send all electric buses to CNG depots. I like CNG buses as a buff but you can only swap them between four depots not to mention the time limit on the tanks, etc. Electrics will make things easier in that regard.

Electric buses still haven't proven themselves for cold temperature operation, though. The technology is getting there by the year but the CNG fleet was a pretty substantial investment for the MTA and at least those buses have the range for the interim. Maybe one more order of CNGs before it's wrapped up.

(MTA) banned artics from running in winter storms some time ago, and the M23, M34, etc. need to make some kind of service somehow...

True, but that's historically been an issue on weekdays only. They can usually make service within the boroughs with Manhattan division alone, sometimes BK division for Tuskegee.

Never seen them post this before (revenue trains running with delays due to slow work trains) I seen one of those snow blowers passing though Hoyt S/B towards Pikin? with a diesel.

Happens pretty frequently thanks to the diesels and the almost completely defective hybrid sets though – some of those can barely make it over the Manhattan Bridge...

Interesting; I definitely remember the Jamaica Bus units from their last days, when they were transferred after the MTA takeover to ex-Triboro routes to bump off some older '85-'86 models.

From the link, it looks like this one-off series of units were all built from late 1993 to mid-1994; I'm guessing perhaps they were part of a larger order placed by another agency somewhere else in the country.  Wouldn't be surprised, seeing how not long after this Green Lines got those WMATA-reject Orion Vs with the annoyingly narrow rear door and tacky vinyl bench seats.

What's funny is how NJT also had vertical tail lights on their RTSes, but not in the same configuration; yet another variation from the standard version- well, that and those weird flush-styled rear doors, anyway:

This reminds me of one of the mysteries I never understood: how 9267 ended up with a bulkhead off an MBTA RTS, with dummy spots for taillights at the top corners. Sort of like 5057 with an ex-PBL engine cover as well...

    Here's a random thought:

Lot of talk is brought up every now and then about how bad the MTA is in terms of toxic management and organizational practices, both by employees/retirees and outsiders alike.  Generally, I agree with much of what has been said in this regard, but with one caveat.

Been reading various materials last few weeks about the inner workings of Amtrak, and let me just say- the nasty folks who run the executive and white-collar side of things at AMTRAK, make the MTA seem sweeter than a children's carnival.  You all would be impressed how messed up the supervisory culture is at Amtrak, oh boy...

It's funny, I've heard a lot of tell about high, high-up projects with a number of agencies involved all going to shit because....everybody hates the people at the AMTRAK and finds them impossible to deal with. Seems like that managerial/executive apple is rotten to the core.
