  1. True, but you do have a lot of hotels in lower Manhattan, which to me makes it worthwhile.

     

    This again is something if I were Godell I would actually PAY the (MTA) to do if only to show those in town for the game the NFL is trying to make it easier to travel   In this case, the (3) would join the (1) on the local for Super Bowl week (since the (3) would go to SF with the (1) and if necessary, the (2) goes express for the week.

     

    Why would they screw over the regular riders just to make it easier for tourists? If I lived on the Livonia El and wanted to get to 7th Avenue I would be fuming if my service was cut just for tourists, even if I got the (4) in exchange.

     

    South Ferry Loop has capacity with the (1) by itself. You'd have to end the (3) at Rector and turn it on the inner track. One stop past Chambers. It would make no sense. Wall Street (2)(3) is five short blocks away from Rector Street (1).

  2. Both can be extended, since they both make all stops past Marcy, so there shouldn't really be any scheduling conflict by extending the all-stops pattern to Bay Parkway (D).

     

    As of now, there aren't enough trains for both to go all the way to Bay Parkway without seeing a slight reduction in frequency, even if one service short-turned at ENY and the other ran express west of there. The (M) had enough, but all of those trains are now going to Midtown. Headways won't decrease by all that much if it runs to 9th Avenue, but Bay Parkway is 9 stops further. Broad Street to 9th is 10 stops. Short-turning the (Z) and having the (J) run express east of Myrtle would (theoretically) speed up service enough for an extension to Brooklyn, but not all the way to Bay Parkway.

    The R160's cannot run on the (A) because of the problems concerning the IND Rockaways and electrical power supplied by LIPA. Originally it was Jamaica that was to receive the dying SMEEs and the car assignments started to take effect with SMEEs being reassigned to the (E) and (F) . That changed because of the premature retirement of the R44s. Many of the R160's ended up in Jamaica as a change of plans. The rest is history.

     

    Thanks for the clarification. Certainly makes more sense, as Jamaica already had a bunch of dying SMEEs on the and those at Pitkin were to be retired.

    Very true. Before the R142/As came in, I remember people speculating that the (3) would be all-NTT. They got thrown on the (4) instead. We thought we knew where the R160s were going until the R44s died in the middle of delivery. Personally, I think that the (MTA) should take a cue from London and keep a fleet on one line for its entire life and replace everything on that line at once. I certainly don't want the R68s off of the (D). They've been there for 25 years and it would be neat to see them live every day in New York at Concourse. It's one of the few lines operating with a single type of rolling stock at all times. Excluding the shuttles, only the (C)(M)(2)(3)(5) share that trait. I certainly agree that it would be stupid to move something to Pitkin for another new fleet.

  4. Where are you getting your info from? Outside of the BMT eastern division the (C) is the only line that runs trains of 8 car units therefore that's where the majority of the 179's will go along with the (J) to bump of those r42's and the 5 car sets going on the (Q) and (T) . Why would the (MTA) go through the hassle of keeping Ntt's off the (A) to put them on the (B) and (D) when the (B) isn't even a full time route and the r68's are fine?

     

    As I said in a later post, the (C) will certainly get NTTs when the R179 order comes in. With the (A), I'm going with history. The R68s are fine, but the (A) and (C) haven't gotten new cars since the R46s, which mostly went to CI and Jamaica. Historically, the trend has been to send new cars to CI and Jamaica with the old cars being transferred to Pitkin and 207th. Did I say it was logical? No. How long did the (7) go without getting new cars? When the R142/As came in, they displaced R62As which were sent to Corona. Instead of giving the (A) R160s to replace its R44s, it got Jamaica's discarded R46s. In a logical world, the (A) would have a full fleet of R211s at the end of the decade, as every car currently on that line is being retired at that point. But, the (MTA) does not run logically.

    I heard from somewhere that the (A) was supposed to get a set of R160's but that didn't happen due to power issues at the Rockaways. But who knows? The (A) and (C) may get the new cars in future.

     

    I thought the 5-car R179s were going to Jamiaca so a few sets of R46s could go to the (A). The (A)did have sets of R160s for in-service testing, and when reroutes sent the (F) to Euclid or Lefferts, a few C/Rs changed to the (A) program at Jay Street. The (C) got R160s from the (J)(Z) last summer for the air conditioning. I fully expect the majority of the incoming 4-car sets to go to the (C), making it entirely NTT by the middle of 2017. I know the 32s, 38s, 44s, and a good amount of 40/Ms and 42s spent their last days on the (A)(C)(E), mainly because Eighth Avenue has some of the better shop facilities (the ones not in the Eastern Division were out of CI for the same reason). The 46s are going to be there until the R211s come in. Knowing the (MTA), they might just send all the 4-cars to ENY and give the "old" R160s to the (C).

    New cars on the (A)? Now you're talking crazy. The (A)(C) are where trains go to die. I don't know if the (C) is getting any of the 65 R179 4-car sets, but one would think so because there are enough short sets to replace every R32 and R42 still in service. I fully expect the R211s to go to Concourse, Jamaica, and CI with the displaced R68/As going to the (A).

  7. Just kill off the (Z) already, and extend the (J) to 95 st all day on weekdays.

     

    The (Z) would be great as an express service between Broadway Junction and Marcy Avenue. It would certainly speed up service to/from areas east of ENY. Heck, they could theoretically do what is done with the (6)<6> in the Bronx and have some (but not all) (J) trips short-turn at Broadway Junction.

     

    No way 95th Street could handle both the (J) and the (R) as it currently stands. With how the timetable is set up, a train leaves <2 minutes after one pulls in on the other track. The (R) would see its frequency cut and Fourth Avenue local riders would be no better off, actually losing some service to Midtown. The (J) would have to terminate at 9th Avenue, 62nd Street, or Bay Parkway (all on West End) for it to work. If they ever built a tunnel to SI, send the (R) over there and then the (J) could end at 95th.

  8. I have a scenario:

     

    During a riot following a Rangers-Islanders game at Madison Square Garden, much debris was deposited by rioters on the tracks of the 7th and 8th Avenue subway stations at Penn Station, causing structural and electrical issues. Support beams and third rails at both stations have been severed, preventing trains on both lines from passing through.

     

    While this shouldn't matter, assume that all Sandy damage has been fixed.

  9. Oh, boy. This will cause some delays. Without Montague, we're kinda limited. But, there isn't much that hasn't been previously thought of. In a perfect world, the Sandy damage would be fixed, so I'll assume that everything is back open. Here we go:

     

    • Bring back the (9). South of 96th Street, it runs local. North of there, it runs on the center express track. Downtown in the morning, uptown in the afternoon and evening.
    • Extend the (J)(Z) to Stillwell, running local in Brooklyn. The (Z) runs peak direction express between Broadway Junction and Marcy and on the West End.
    • Have a new service (W) run from Stillwell to Ditmars via Sea Beach and the Manhattan Bridge. Basically, the (N) / NX, but runs express on Sea Beach, Broadway, and in Queens.
    • The (Q) uses the 63rd Street Tunnel to Queens, running QBL/Hillside express all the way to 179th Street
    • The (F) runs express on the Culver line (peak direction only between Church and Avenue X).
    • The (V) is brought back and uses its old route. Every other train is extended to Stillwell via Culver Local
    • Concourse express service is expanded
    • The (B) is extended to Ocean Parkway and runs in Brooklyn 24/7
    • The Rockaways (A) runs express on Liberty Avenue. Some trains run express north of Broad Channel. 1/3 of Lefferts (A) run express east of where the Rockaway Line branches off.
    • The <4> runs express in the Bronx
    • The <6> is express all the way to Pelham Bay Park and the (6) no longer ends at Parkchester
    • The (5) is full-time express south of E180. North of there, every third (2) and (5) runs express to Wakefield of Dyre, respectively.

    You didn't mention the connecting tracks at Broadway Junction, so I assume they don't have to be used. But, if they must, run the (K) from Canarsie to 168th via 8th Avenue local, running on the Jamaica line btwn ENY and Essexl. I think that covers everything.

    (D) 2nd Avenue to Norwood, running on the C between West 4th and 59th.

    (F) Runs on the E between West 4th and Queens. Terminates at Neptune Avenue on the southbound track, crossing back over just south of Avenue X

    (J) Metropolitan Avenue to Bay 50th on the West End and Alabama to Jamaica Center.

    (L) 8th Avenue to Myrtle and Atlantic Avenue to Canarsie. Temporary free transfer to Livonia El at Livonia Avenue

    (M) Suspended, replaced by F and J

    (N) 86th Street in Brooklyn to Forest Hills, via Montague Tunnel and QBL. Single track shuttle between 39th and Ditmars. Temporary free transfer between 36th St on the QBL and 39th Ave on Astoria.

    (Q) Ocean Parkway-Forest Hills via Montague, 63rd, and QBL.

    (R) Suspended north of 36th in Brooklyn

    (S) BMT/IRT Unaffected

    (S) Rockaway Suspended, see above

    (Z) Suspended

    (2) No service between 3rd-149th and E180

    If Montague is closed, run a shuttle on the West End line, the N doesn't run between Court and Whitehall, the J terminates at Broad, the Q terminates at Prospect Park, and a shuttle runs between 7th/57th and Forest Hills via 63rd Street.

     

    In either case, all express service is suspended to ease travels for those going to/from a closed or hard to access station

    I'm all for restoring Nassau service to/from Brooklyn after Montague reopens. Could take some people off the (2)(3)(4)(5)(R). The biggest problem is ensuring that there are enough 4-car sets to extend the line by ~60% without reducing service frequency to unacceptable levels. People along the Jamaica line won't like seeing the headways on the (J)(Z) double (which is what would happen if the net amount of cars assigned to the (J)(Z) does not change).

     

    It would probably just be easier to extend the J/Z to the M's old terminal at Bay Pkwy without the skip stop... This sounds unnecessarily complicated.

     

    Agree entirely. If anything (providing that the aforementioned issue is resolved), have the (D) run express north of Bay Parkway (or, preferably, add another crossover south of 62nd St and have the express run start there. Ideally, the (J)(Z) would run local on 4th Avenue, supplementing the absymal (R) service it currently sees. It would then run local on West End and end at Bay Parkway. There's no way Stillwell could reliably handle another service. Cut them back to 9th Avenue during middays (and maybe weekends) so the poor folks transfering from the (F)(G) at 9th Street have a semi-decent chance of waiting less than 20 minutes for a BMT local to appear. I'd say keep it at Chambers on weekends. There's a reason why such a weekend service has never existed (to my knowledge, at least).

    Here's what I've got:

     

    In Manhattan/Brooklyn:

    (J) terminates at Essex Street, using the middle track (normally Brooklyn-bound (J)(Z))

    (M) running with as many extra trainsets from the (J) as Queens Boulevard can handle

    (Z) Suspended

     

    Transfer to (F)(M) at Essex to continue into Manhattan. To access (J)(Z) stations south of Essex, transfer to (A)(C) at Broadway Junction or (6) at Broadway-Lafayette.

     

    In the Rockaways:

    Until the switch is fixed (assuming the Rockaway-bound track is unaffected:

    (A) All Far Rockaway-bound trains sent to Rockaway Park.

    Rockaway (S) Suspended

    Shuttle train (H) / (S) / (JFK) / whatever the (MTA) decides to call it runs from Beach 105 Street (relaying on a yard track or the pocket track southof the station) to Far Rockaway over the wye track

     

    To access stations normally serviced by (A), transfer to shuttle train at Beach 90, 98, or 105

    Use LIRR Far Rockaway Branch as an alternate.

    Expect severe delays

     

  13. CTA did that...They red striped 24 of their 2400 series.These cars are work motors and can operate in regular service if needed

    How many extra cars will they really have? If Wikipedia is right, a little under 400 R142As are going from the (6) to the (7)<7> as conversions. The R62As on the (7) (~350 of them) are going to Westchester. 600 R142As were built, with a little over 100 normally running on the (4). In normal service, the (6)<6> runs just under 40 trains, which is ~400 cars. If spares are accounted for, there is little to no net change in Westchester. Even though new cars are being built, all are going to Corona to allow for shorter headways once CBTC is active on the Flushing line. As to whether or not they'll be kept as singles, I'd assume they will be (possibly allowing a nice RFW into City Hall) to double as spares for the (S), but knowing the (MTA), we never know. Maybe they will place a few cars into work service to replace the R33s, but I doubt there would be many.

    (C) Runs from 168th to Chambers, no Brooklyn service

    (J) Assuming ENY yard is unaffected, No service between Chauncey and Alabama

    (L) No service between Myrtle and Atlantic

    (Z) Suspened

     

    Shuttle buses run along the routes of the (A), (J), and (L). Free transfer from subway to LIRR Atlantic Branch (and vice-versa) between Jamaica and Atlantic Terminal.
