I watched News 12 two hours ago, and they say that Gov. Paterson is planing to lay off thousands of state jobs in order to balance the state budget in 1/1/2011. The final decision will be in the hands of the person elected governor in November.

Nothing new there. An outgoing elected official who decides not to run for reelection because Global Warming has made the chance of Hell freezing over all but impossible. An outgoing elected official who figures that since he's had the shovel in his hands from the start of his term that he might as well keep digging, only to snap the shovel handle, bust the rungs on the ladder out of the hole and cut the climbing line before passing it on to his successor. An outgoing elected official who continues making a mess even though he knows that the broom head is down to stubs, the mop and bucket have been missing (probably in the pantry of one of the cabinet members' homes) and the vacuum is filled, while the store that sold new bags was run out of business. An outgoing elected official whose pockets have gotten deeper while his policies have only gotten more shallow. An outgoing elected official whose plan to lay off tax-paying constituents in order to reduce state budget expenses, which will more than likely lead to mortgage foreclosures, defaulted loans and a decrease in state-funded and provided services rendered has been put in place to put his successor on the spot as the "Bad Guy" whose decision regarding whom to lay off and whom to retain is a no-win situation no matter how it's looked it.

Politicians are at the bottom of the food chain, and at election time, it's a matter of choosing the Cream of the Crap. These elected officials will sway their political stances (Michael Bloomberg, Joseph Lieberman, John V. Lindsay, etc.) at the drop of a dime to pick up a vote, and none of them are competent decision-makers, capable of thinking for themselves, let alone the hundreds, thousands or even millions of people who vote for them thinking that change is only a ballot box and voting booth away. The United States government is so flawed and wrought with loopholes in every branch, and a wide scale reformation of the entire system to eliminate corruption, unscrupulous closed-door deal-making and roll-of-the-twice *** flip-of-the-coin decisions regarding the future of every single American citizen is not only completely impossible, but also entirely impractical and very much out of reach.

Weathering the storm is one thing; when financial straits keep holes in the galoshes, the slicks torn and the roof leaking, it's time to plan for a trip to the store and new house construction, rebuilding from the ground on up. Personally, I don't think we've even seen the eye yet.
