MikeGerald Posted January 26, 2011 Share #2 Posted January 26, 2011 This is not an improvement but rather a reduction in capability and service for #6 riders. If there is any train problem the above map presents no way to move trains from one track to another between the Hunts Point Avenue station, and this "new" Westchester Square station. That does not help anyone, let alone the #6 riders. In addition, the #6 "Westchester Local" would end up more crowded than the Pelham Bay trains, especially during the rush hours since it would handle a great deal of the local stations without relief from the #6 Pelham express trains. Transferring between the #6 local and the #6 "express" is really over-rated offering very little real benefit - the time savings are not that great. By placing the ability to terminate and relay trains, and the ability to store and layup trains all at one station - Westchester Square -- this does not help operations along the #6 line. Now trains that terminate and relay at Parkchester can do so, while trains bound to and from the train yard do not interfer with each other, and those operations can occur at the same time. The Westchester Square station would become congested with traffic - so not good, and without a station that would serve as relief. When the Parkchester station is congested, the Westchester Square station is the relief by taking trains out of service or placing them in service. This is one of those moments to leave well enough alone. Mike
CenSin Posted January 28, 2011 Share #3 Posted January 28, 2011 My problem with this map is that it lacks logic. The yard tracks are being used to relay local trains, but the track connecting to the Manhattan-bound local track does not come from the yard. Express trains originating from Pelham Bay Park have to cross paths with local trains originating from the yard. The current arrangement has this problem too, but since you're making a change, you could've made the problem go away as well.
