2011 Subway and Bus Photo Contest presented by

NYPIRG’s Straphangers Campaign

Transportation Alternatives’ Rider Rebellion Campaign

Sick and tired of overflowing garbage cans at your subway station? Or watching your subway station crumble while waiting for your train? Or are you in love with the sights spied during your commute; from couples to musicians to sunsets on an elevated line?

Or are you just concerned that years of budget cuts may be taking a toll on our subways and buses?

Then enter our subway and bus photo contest. Who are we? We are NYPIRG’s Straphangers Campaign and Transportation Alternatives’ Rider Rebellion Campaign, two groups that care about the future of our transit system.

The Rules

The rules are simple. You can submit up to three (3) photos in each of two categories:

For "Good Transit Scene" photos can depict anything that shows the life and energy of the subway or bus system.

The second category is "Bad Transit Scene." These photos can depict conditions on the subways or buses that need fixing, such as drips (and subway stalactites and stalagmites!) or broken lighting.

Completed entries must be submitted via the online entry form to the Straphangers Campaign by 4 p.m., Friday, June 10, 2011.

Contest Rules: 2011 Subway and Bus Photo Contest

Please read the following:

The “2011 Subway and Bus Photo Contest” is being conducted by NYPIRG’s Straphangers Campaign and Transportation Alternatives’ Rider Rebellion Campaign, two non-profit groups who care about the future of New York City’s Transit buses and subways.

We are running the contest for two reasons. First, it is part of an effort to show through images how public transit is a defining element of New York City life. Second, we are concerned that an ongoing revenue crisis caused by years of budget cuts is undermining the state’s ability to provide New Yorkers with the affordable and reliable public transit we rely on every day.

The contest is open to everyone* and there is no entry fee.

Our groups will be asking tens of thousands of individuals by e-mail to submit entries and we will also use social media to get the word out. We will be announcing the contest to media outlets.

To be considered a valid entry, participants must completely fill out the online survey form by providing their full name, address, phone, digital photo entry, and photo caption.

Completed entries must be submitted via the online entry form to NYPIRG’s Straphangers Campaign by 4 p.m., Friday, June 10, 2011.

Submissions

Participants can submit up to three (3) photos in each of two categories: “Good Transit Scene” and “Bad Transit Scene.”

For the first category, “Good Transit Scene,” you can choose images that show how subway and bus scenes highlight the best of New York.

The second category is "Bad Transit Scene." These photos can depict conditions in the subways or on buses that need fixing, everything from peeling paint to garbage strewn locations to rusted canopies.

Photos must be submitted in the following format:

* JPEG or GIF format only

* 250K or lower file size

* 400x300 pixel size max

Entries which are digitally enhanced, manipulated or a composite of multiple images must be based on the entrant's original photos or photos for which the entrant is the copyright holder. Images that are judged to be primarily computer illustrations rather than photo-based work will be disqualified.

All pictures must be original photographs. Upon request, the winner in each category must be able to provide a high resolution version of the winning photo or, if shot on film, the original slide or negative.

Our groups reserve the right to publish any photo entries in the “2011 Subway and Bus Photo Contest” either in print and/or on our website.

Judging

An impartial committee will select five finalists in each category. Then the public–via our websites–will be asked to vote online for their favorite entry in each of the two categories. The top vote-getter will be deemed the winner and will be awarded a 30-day MetroCard. Each of the four runners-up will have their entry posted on our websites and be featured in our ad campaign for better service.

We will also submit all the winning pictures to transit officials. In the case of “Bad Transit Scenes” hopefully these officials can resolve the problem.

Winners will be finalized June 27, 2011 and notified by e-mail shortly thereafter. The list of winners will be posted at http://www.straphangers.org and http://www.riderrebellion.org.

If an inadequate number of entries are submitted, our groups reserve the right to modify the submission dates.

If more than one e-mail address is stated on the submitted online entry form, the first listed name shall be deemed the entrant.

The decision of the NYPIRG Straphangers Campaign and Transportation Alternatives shall be final on all matters concerning the contest and the online vote for the winner of the each of the two categories shall be final.

This offer is void where prohibited by law.

* Employees of the New York Public Interest Research Group and Transportation Alternatives are prohibited from participating in the “2011 Subway and Bus Photo Contest.”
