New rules are in the works that would allow more businesses to build soaring neon signs on nonresidential buildings in parts of the borough near the East River.

The move is being led by JetBlue, which is planning the design for its new corporate headquarters near Queens Plaza North.

The JetBlue logo would glow blue during the day, and white at night.

City councilman Jimmy Van Bramer said he welcomes the signage and what it represents.

"Who wouldn't be thrilled to have JetBlue choose their neighborhood for its world headquarters? It's a huge get," he said. "It's one of the best things to happen for Long Island City, the Dutch Kills area in 20 to 30 years."

The proposed zoning changes require a tenant to occupy at least 20 percent of a building, or a minimum of 50,000 square feet.

The City Council is expected to pass them Monday."
