AMR CORPORATION - FLEET RENEWAL APPROACH

Recommended Posts

American Airlines is taking significant steps to transform and enhance our fleet so that in five years, we will have U.S. airline industry's youngest and most fuel-efficient fleet. Our investment in our fleet is the latest in a series of strategic investments we feel are necessary to enhance the overall customer experience, as well as maintain and grow market share. In 2009, American began taking delivery of Boeing 737s and plans to bring them into the fleet through 2013. These aircraft enhance the customer experience and are much more fuel-efficient than the MD-80s, lowering our operating costs and helping to keep airfares as low as possible for customers. Here's just a snapshot of some of our fleet transformation efforts:

Boeing 777-300ERs

  • As part of American's fleet renewal efforts, in 2011, we announced orders for 10 Boeing 777-300ERs that are scheduled for delivery in 2012 through 2013.
  • The 777-300ERs will complement our fleet, offering additional network flexibility in the future, and providing increased efficiency due to better seat mile economics and performance characteristics.
  • We are the first U.S. airline to order the 777-300ER and will be the first U.S. airline to take delivery of the 777-300ER.
  • The 777-300ER will provide the airline with more passenger and cargo capacity than any other aircraft in the fleet today.

Boeing 777-200ERs

  • As part of American's international widebody strategy, American plans to update its entire fleet of 777-200ERs with a two-class cabin configuration to better match capacity and demand.
  • The 777-200ERs will receive fully lie-flat Business Class seats with aisle access for every seat, international Wi-Fi, in-seat entertainment throughout all cabins, and Main Cabin Extra seating offering more legroom.
  • The interior will include unique mood lighting, a dramatic archway and ceiling treatment that create a feeling of spaciousness and a walk-up bar in the Business Class cabin stocked with snacks and refreshments for premium customers.
  • The aircraft will feature up to 45 fully lie-flat Business Class seats, all with aisle access, and up to 45 Main Cabin Extra seats. The Main Cabin will receive up to 173 new seats.
  • The 777-200ER is intended to fly mid- to long-haul international markets in Europe, Asia and South America.
  • American intends to begin retrofitting the 777-200ERs in early 2014.
  • American will be among the first in the industry to offer the combination of fully lie-flat seats with all-aisle access, international Wi-Fi, and top of the line in-seat entertainment.

Boeing 767-300ERs

  • American intends to retrofit up to half of its existing 767-300ER aircraft. Those that are redesigned will operate the new configuration with fully lie-flat Business Class Seats and all-aisle access. The remaining 767-300ERs that are not redesigned will be retired over time.
  • The Business Class cabin will feature up to 28 fully lie-flat Business Class seats with all-aisle access, individual tray tables, a work surface, and universal AC power outlets, in addition to the Samsung Galaxy Tab™ 10.1 device currently offered for inflight entertainment.
  • The 767-300ERs will have 14 Main Cabin Extra seats with four to six inches more leg room than a standard Main Cabin seat. The Main Cabin will offer 167 seats.
  • The airline intends to use retrofitted 767-300ERs on flights to existing markets.
  • American intends to begin retrofitting the 767-300ERs in early 2014.

Boeing 787s

  • We have plans to acquire 42 state-of-the-art 787 Dreamliners, which are currently scheduled to be delivered starting in late 2014

Boeing 737-800s

  • We have plans to acquire 200 additional aircraft from the 737 family, with options for another 100 737 family aircraft
  • As part of our Boeing agreement, we plan to take delivery of 100 aircraft from Boeing's current 737NG family starting in 2013, including three 737-800 options that had been exercised as of July 1, 2011.
  • American also expects to acquire 100 of Boeing's next-generation 737 MAX aircraft, which will be powered by CFM International LEAP-1B engines. The new-engine variant is expected to have 10 to12 percent lower fuel burn than current 737s.
  • Our most recent deliveries of the 737-800, with 160 seats, include the all-new Boeing Sky Interior, offering larger overhead bins that pivot down and out similar to those on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, a contemporary feeling of spaciousness, and variable LED lighting options for cabin ambience.
  • We are retrofitting our current fleet of 76 737-800s to match those new deliveries.

Airbus

  • In 2013, we will begin taking delivery of the 130 current-generation Airbus A319 and A321
  • The A319 aircraft will be powered by the CFM56-5B engine from CFM International, a joint venture between General Electric and Snecma.
  • The A321 aircraft will be equipped with V2500-A5 engines from International Aero Engines (IAE), a joint venture between Pratt & Whitney, Rolls-Royce, MTU and JAEC.
  • These engines were selected to enhance the operational performance and fuel efficiency of American's new Airbus fleet. The Airbus A320 family aircraft offer a 35 percent reduction in fuel cost per seat versus the MD-80 and a 12 percent and 15 percent fuel cost reduction per seat, respectively, versus the 757 and 767-200
  • We will begin taking delivery of 130 Airbus "Neo" next-generation engine technology in 2017
