What are your hopes for NICE in the coming years?

What are your hopes for NICE(Nassau Inter County Express) in the coming years? Such as service improvements, new buses, update the bus shelters, more buses coming frequently(on time), new routes(maybe or already has enough) & expand express/Limited services on other routes(currently on N4X, N6X, N20L & N22X). Transdev North America has set up three goals for success:

  • Provide the county the best bus system the county could afford - Reduce costs and balance the budget.
  • Service quality had to be dramatically improved. The service network needed to be redesigned, customers needed to be involved in the system, and the image of the service needed to be improved.
  • The financial risks of the operation such as safety, labor, and health insurance had to be transferred to the private sector who under this model would become responsible for all aspects of service delivery.

Before Nassau Inter County Express:

"In early 2011, the New York (MTA), facing economic challenges, proposed drastic service changes. They would eliminate more than half of the existing Long Island Bus routes, significantly curtail ADA paratransit service (AbleRide) and fire hundreds of workers. Alternatively, the (MTA) proposed that Nassau County quadruple its subsidy payments for the transit system, increasing it to $35 million from $9 million. That was after (MTA) had already raised fares by 50 percent, cut 13 routes and reduced the ADA service area boundaries. The choice for Nassau County was to face enormous cuts in service or pay $26 million more annually."

After Nassau Inter County Express:

"Additionally, in the process of changes to the service no routes were eliminated, fares were not raised, and there were no changes or reductions to the paratransit service, AbleRide. Ridership actually increased 13% even with service reductions. Service levels will be increased on busy lines. A service increase in the range of 7% to 9% will be implemented in two phases in 2013. The implementation of GPS technology will be completed, and procurement of more buses will continue the improvement of NICE’s fleet", according to http://www.transdevna.com/Transit/Bus/Case-Studies/Nassau-County.aspx.
