TTC Toronto Transit Commission Subway (Lines 1, 2, and 3)

Recommended Posts

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) system is the busiest transit system in Canada. It has about 2200 buses for service in more than 120+ routes, about 850 train cars for service on 4 rapid transit subway lines, and 200 streetcars for 15 streetcar lines.

The Toronto Subway Lines 1 and 2 have a frequency of 2-3 minutes during the rush hours and 5 minutes in the off-peak. Line 3 runs every 5 to 7 minutes. That is something I really enjoyed about this system. Lines 1, 2, and 4 are 4 ft 10 7⁄8 in (1,495 mm) wide, a little wider than the stander gauge lines (Line 3 and future Lines 5 and 6, maybe 7).

Line 1 Yonge-University is  a big loop. It starts in the north, heads downtown to Union Station, and heads back up north again, for a total length of 24 miles with 38 stations. It is the busiest of all the lines and is home to the new Toronto Rocket trains. It was recently extended from Sheppard West (former Downsview) to Vaughan Metro Centre.

Line 2 Bloor-Danforth runs east-to-west from Kennedy to Kipling, passing through downtown but not Union Station. It is 16 miles long and has 31 stations, and hosts the older T1 trains (with the old subway aesthetics and personally my favorite because of its similar look to older NYC trains).

Line 3 Scarborough is an interesting little thing. It's not heavy rail transit but is a light rail train with more in common with the JFK Airtrain. Its Mark I rolling stock is the predecessor to the Bombardier Innovia Metro. Now the line itself essentially extends Line 2 from Kennedy to McCowan (4 miles, 6 stations). There have been plans forever to extend Line 2 to replace Line 3, with Doug Ford (yes, the brother of Rob) calling for the latest proposal.

Unfortunately, I was not able to get photos of Line 4 Sheppard (east-west, 3.4 miles with 5 stations), which is this rather useless dinky that should have been built as a light rail line, especially since it is in the middle of nowhere and doesn't even head south to the business center.

Not included is the light rail Line 5 Eglinton under construction. It will run from east from Kennedy, along Eglinton Avenue, and to Mount Dennis GO Transit, making connections to Line 2 and both sides of Line 1. The Bombardier Flexity Freedom trains are being delivered already.

Also not included is Line 6 Finch West, another LRT whose construction just began. It will run from Line 1's new Finch West station west to Humber College along Finch Avenue. It will run Alstom Citadis trains.

The subway has its own share of problems (if you don't follow Steve Munro, please do. The man is incredible in his advocacy for transit. Wish we had someone like him in the New York: https://stevemunro.ca/ ), but it runs very well. It's positives should be emulated here.
