The n70/71 schedule is now out. While it shows the n71 now being a full time Farmingdale-Amityville route, the route has also been altered to no longer serve Conklin Street and Downtown Farmingdale. Buses will now continue down Route 110 to Route 109, then enter Nassau County that way. The n71 will now serve Republic Plaza. Might be be a way to compensate for the elimination of the n72 a long time ago.

The route will also be the first NICE bus route to not have any terminals in Nassau County. Also the only route in the downstate region to not terminate within its main county of operation.

  6. 9 hours ago, The TransitMan said:

Saw this coming from a mile away SMH. I knew that this was going to happen, what I didn't anticipate is that it would happen this early. If the seats are all taken up already, imagine how it will be during the summer when traffic congestion and ridership goes up . They spend money for all those microtransit vehicles for it to not even be able to get a seat after 2 hours, JFC.

A day before they ended up posting about the 10B/10C replacement I emailed SCT, specifically mentioning that i thought this whole thing was problematic, that there would be negative impacts to wait times and reliability, and to consider retaining the 10C on a modified route. Their response was that because of "low density" and seasonal ridership that it made it a good candidate for microtransit, adding that they "hope to provide more frequent service than what fixed routes would provide".

They also brought up the 10A / Southampton microtransit zone, to make the case for microtransit, making the comparison that the average wait time for the microtransit of 30 minutes was lower than the 10A headway (1.5+ hours). Not only is that not fair of a comparison, but it raised red flags when I read it. If the 10A was so underutilized, and they have 2-4 vehicles out there (according to them) then why is the wait time that long? People who were taking the 10A were not just showing up at the stop and waiting, they already knew the schedule and coordinated around a certain bus. Meaning that the wait times would not have been the scheduled headway. The 10B/10C collectively were more utilized than the 10A, so if they plan on having 2-4 vehicles here as well, covering a larger area and larger ridership, well of course the wait times are gonna be even worse <_<.

Anyone who is familiar with the area knows that it is common sense - Montauk is a bit far out and has only one way in/out. That makes all the difference here especially in the summer when Montauk Highway can and does get backed up. If someone requests a ride in Montauk you're effectively down a vehicle for quite some time.  However this is the problem - you have this redesign done by some consulting firm that only looks at numbers, and rarely puts those things in context. Sure the 10C had relatively low ridership compared to the rest of the system but it also had significantly less trips than the rest of the system. The county probably doesn't know these intricacies either and doesn't care.

They probably just saw more efficient and/or lower costs and they went with that, which is why they went apeshit in the direction of frequency. Boosting drequency on the busier routes would probably be more efficient use of resources, although coverage matters and even then things need to be looked at on a case-by-case basis. If people are already being passed up, waiting for 2+ hours until giving up and/or shelling half your day's pay, this is anything but reliable. If more vehicles need to be added to adequately handle demand, then what the f**k are you actually saving?

I will keep saying it, but what I think should have been done was to keep the 10C, and have it be a hybrid fixed/flex route. Basically a fixed route between East Hampton and Montauk, and then a flex route within Montauk making certain stops (all stops on request at time of boarding or at Montauk Village towards Montauk - and call in or request on an app for the bus to East Hampton). If you did that, and made the bus go right back out after picking up/dropping off within Montauk, you could have ran the bus on a 2 hour headway instead of a 3 hour headway. That way it is timed to the 92, and there is more of a guarantee for more people that a bus will show up within a certain time. During the summers maybe add a bus for hourly service. The 10B between East Hampton & Springs + Amagansett could have been covered by a microtransit zone if they wish, and now you have 1-3 operators covering a significantly smaller area than what they have now. That way they could potentially consider expanding the zone a little further west if they wished.

Unfortunately I see all of this as futile, because it largely appears that SCT just wanted to rush the new system in for the sake of saying that they changed things around. One of several reasons as to why I've been put off by this new network and why I really don't care that much at all to use it/try it out.

  7. So apparently what did the existing proposal was the criticism over the Poughkeepsie city routes and to a lesser extent, Beacon.

    https://www.timesunion.com/hudsonvalley/news/article/poughkeepsie-bus-changes-maplewood-pushback-19394156.php

As the article also mentions, many county-level politicians representing affected areas voted for the budget proposal which included a cut in bus service without knowing the specifics of how they were going to be done.

Only the legislator representing areas along Route C in Northwest Dutchess voted no. One Poughkeepsie area legislator in voted for it while admitting he didn't read the plan. After learning about the impacts he changed his tune and expressed outrage over the plan (while also telling elderly constituents to stop calling his office over it).

(Schedules have not been released yet)

    New n31X route

One major highlight is the introduction of an n31X route between Hempstead Transit Center and Mott/Central Avenues (near Far Rockaway (A)station) via Rockville Centre. Buses would operate non-stop between Hempstead and Rockville Centre, then stop in Lynbrook, and make limited stops to Far Rockaway. Presumably runs during weekday rush hours. If they wanted to, they could have added a stop at Mercy Medical Center and probably eliminated that community shuttle route.

Other Route changes effective May 26 Include:

    n1

    • Off Peak extension to/from UBS Arena during daytime hours

    n21

    • Sunday service only between Roslyn and Glen Cove

    n71

    • Route between Hempstead and Farmingdale discontinued
    • Service operates between Farmingdale State College and Amityville at all times
    • Service boosted to every 40 minutes
  9. Some interesting stats with express buses. Definitely there's rebounding going on plus people shifting from subways/local buses to the express. There are several instances of ridership now being greater than pre-pandemic (2019) ridership on weekdays, weekends, or both.

Routes surpassing pre-pandemic ridership on weekdays:

    BM2, BM5, BxM1, BxM3, BxM4, BxM6, BxM8

Routes surpassing pre-pandemic ridership on weekends:

    BM1, BM2, BM3, BM4, BM5, X27, X28, BxM1, BxM3, BxM4, BxM6, BxM8, BxM9, BxM10, QM4, QM5, QM6, QM15, SIM3C, SIM33C

    Routes surpassing annual pre-pandemic ridership:

    BM2, BM5, BxM1, BxM3, BxM4, BxM6, BxM8, BxM10

  10. Speaking of X trips, I really do think they should try their hand with a 119X. That trip down to Bayonne can be brutal even outside the rush hour, I can only imagine how much worse it gets during rush hours. Plus I do think there's ridership to support such a service

Way I would do it is basically all stops south of Sip Avenue along JFK Boulevard, then express to/from Manhattan (no JSQ). That could mean take Tonnelle Avenue to NJ-495 between New York and Jersey City.

Given that they already have short-turns to/from JFK Boulevard & 61st Street that shouldn't be too much of an issue (especially since inbound buses are pick-up only). Perhaps it can start off as a weekday rush hour type of thing, and then expand as necessary.

  11. 10B/10C service will be eliminated on April 28th. That is the same day that the microtransit zone is going to begin.

    https://sctbus.org/SCT-On-Demand

SMH at all this microtransit craze going on that have all these transit agencies going f**king stupid with it. I can maybe get East Hampton (10B area) as a microtransit zone (and don't have issue with the Southampton one which replaced the 10A), but gutting East Hampton to Montauk fixed-route service? That trip takes quite some time to do (to get to someone either traveling within Montauk, or between East Hampton and Montauk). The round trip will add up, there should have been a fixed route between those two points.

Complete joke and disappointing. On a sidenote, I can only imagine the nonsense that will will come out whenever the final Westchester redesign plan comes through which is arguably worse in scale than with Suffolk.

  15. After a relatively long hiatus, I am back with the list of route and schedule changes this week. Simply put, I just don't have the same time like I used to, and making these lists can take time, usual several days if there are enough changes to the departure times. I actually was not planning to do one this time around, but some route and stop changes caught my eye earlier today (technically yesterday) at this point. Thankfully while there were multiple new timetables issued, many of them were just the MTA dicking around with the formatting for whatever reason. Some new timetables are also the first under the new format. So it did not take me relatively long to compile everything together. Also Staten Island had zero changes so that was great.

While most of the changes went into effect on Sunday, some others are from either earlier in the year or from last year, which have been noted. The comparisons and the changes seen below for virtually all the routes were done based on the current issue timetable vs. the issued timetable in February 2023.

    Delays

Metropolitan Av-bound (M) and southbound (R) trains are delayed while we address a switch problem near Queens Plaza.

Some Metropolitan Av-bound (M) trains will be rerouted via (R) line from Queens Plaza to Whitehall St-South Ferry.

Listen for train crew announcements to hear how your train will run.

    Posted: 04/01/2024 07:51 AM

  17. I also remember just before the covid lockdowns, the (M) was extended to 168th Street, but it was to replace the (C) train for some reason that's blanking on me at this point. What I do know is that it was the circumstances of that particular G.O. which led to that service pattern. This was also when the (M) was regularly going to 96th on weekends.

Either way, getting the (M) involved in something that has nothing to do with it is unwarranted. Even if the (N) operate every 10 or so minutes on weekends, that means that Astoria riders would be seeing less service than what's proposed under the G.O., if you split up the route to two terminals. That's not to prioritize Astoria riders over everyone else, it's just that there's a lot going on simultaneously. Given everything else that's going on, the 15 minute headway is the least bad scenario.

  18. Part Suspended

There is no (4) train service between 167 St and Woodlawn in both directions.
