Trains are being held all the way past White Plains heading away from the incident at Melrose.

Man, I'm starting to think centralizing train operations in one location is a bad idea. First the NYCT RCC signal communications shuts down the entire IRT, now Metro-North can't localize a power cut because everything's centralized in GCT.

This was a 3 hour delay for brother travelling to Croton Falls. Then he drove home to  Danbury. Probably saw sunrise.

There are errors in some of the schedules.

Look at the E schedule.  https://new.mta.info/coronavirus/overnight/last-E-train

Going towards WTC, the train arrives Canal Street at 12:50 AM, 50th Street at 12:55, 42nd Street 12:57, etc. down the line. Does the train back up after arriving at Canal?

I noticed similar errors in the D schedule.

There should be a table of the last passenger trains of the night listed by line and by station on the MTA web site.  I did see it but I have no ideas on how to bring it back up.

But the table would be based on regular service, not GO's, which may change the time.

Best bet, do not count on riding the last train of the night.

It should be listed on the schedules, but it isn't.

According to the MTA, 12:45AM is the last train leaving 242nd, so I assume that the station "closed" after that train leaves.

That's why I looked at the schedule to see the last train. What does "closed between 1 and 5AM" mean? Arrive at last stop before 1 AM? Leave all stations at 1 AM or something else?

  5. I looked at Sept 13 subway schedules and they show 24 hour service so I'm confused.

Good luck to those taking the exam. I'd be curious to hear about what the training is like and how the job compares to tower operators at NYCT, so keep us updated.

Also, PSCC, is that sort of an equivalent to the NYCT RCC or the RTC for Metro-North?

PSCC is like NYCT and Metro North RCC.

PSCC controls the railroad between A Interlocking on the west side of the station all the way east to Harold.

You need to know all the signals & definitions like the engineers & conductors? Then why is it that they test you on half of the amount they test for the others? And give you 3 weeks to study as opposed to 5 weeks for the Engineers & Conductors? Why wouldn’t it be the same tests & study material. Just curious.

Could it be they are taught more than S&D? Engineers have to learn cab signals. I don't know why block operators would have to know anything about cab signals.

thank you for the info, it sounds like it could be stressful, do you know how much of it deals with looking at signals? Which stations do they place the block operators? I'm assuming jamaica, penn.

You have to know all signals and definitions like Engineers and Conductors. They have BO's in Jay , Valley ,Penn (PSCC),Atlantic Terminal, I think Harold also and probably a few others if I'm missing some. There use to be more towers all over the RR at one time.It can be stressful , from what I've been told by a few BO's I know. But some people live for that stuff and also some people like to work in a office type setting staring computers. Depends on you , but it's a good job and also a great way to have your foot in the door. Like I said before , this craft usually leads to higher crafts in the Transportation dept.

There are also towers at Divide (DV) at Hicksville, Nassau at Mineola, Queens, Babylon, and Lead at Long Beach. Harold is controlled by PSCC.

  9. The issue is that the condition of the Belmont Spur is so terrible that what trains you do run out of there have to crawl like a snail. MTA should still be maintaining the branch, and it might be good for it to upgrade the tracks and electrical infrastructure and whatnot, but since 2010 that's no longer its responsibility.

So who is responsible for maintaining the spur?

  10. Let's suppose a train holds 1,000 (including standees.) Their plan was to move 21,000. (Yes, more showed up than expected.) That's roughly 21 trains. Running time between Belmont and Jamaica is 16 minutes. I think they should have operated trains as a shuttle between Belmont and Jamaica and run deadhead back to Belmont. Also, there should have been free transfers to the (E) and (J) at Jamaica.

  11. During the week, the (R) operates between Whitehall and Continental Avenue. On weekends, it operates the entire route via the bridge. Spring is here to stay (until Summer arrives.) Tourists will flood the city. On weekends, the subway transportation to Battery Park (Staten Island ferry, Statue of Liberty ferry) is on the (1), (4) and (5). Should some (R) trains be routed to Whitehall on weekends to take some of the load off the other lines? The (R) doesn't have to the whole day but maybe 9 AM to 9 PM.
