  1. I was like "Wait, Am i missing something?" But in this case we're talking about PHYSICAL differences, no? In which case the "CBTC Hump" of the 188 is the only physical difference besides "new train smell" Meanwhile... It's all true! They also secretly tested the R160 in 1998. I have proof. Even a video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nR2sZsiE_M I also own the entire subway system and will happily sell it to you for just $100. Cash only please.
  2. quick a-googlin suggests it at least happened. Although - according to THIS VERY FORUM http://www.nyctransitforums.com/forums/topic/35401-r40-v-train/ Sooooo, basically everyone's right. R40\ did run on the V but also didn't run on the V. Fascinating.
  3. This past weekend it was an all-trains-local scenario and that often gives the R the shaft. 3 m trains before an R? which direction? I almost universally see the opposite - though most of the time these days I take the N/Q even though it's a little further from me.
  4. That would be the ideal, yes. From the various news reports that I've found, it claims that the reason for the service cuts is as follows: Yes, there is work happening on the N/B exp track (D4) that requires a 24/7 10mph speed restriction. I don't know what kind of work would require that 24/7 and not just overnights but perhaps someone with more knowledge can chime in. Anyway, that means reduced capacity for E/F with some going via local (D2) which requires cutting service on local. For what it's worth, they did specifically time this cut to coincide with traditionally the lowest ridership of the year. That doesn't mean anyone is happy about it. Personally, I plan to avoid it entirely as it's an 11 minute walk from my house to the M/R and an 18 minute walk to the N/Q. Better to have a known extra 7 minutes than an unknown extra ???
  5. The old Luminator LCD boards just cycle between both terminals. It never indicated where it was going. But these signs are very old and far more simplistic than the R160 displays. Also: Not for nothing, but the "via 60th and via 59th" are both technically correct. The Lexington Ave 59th st station is technically on 60th street. The river tube is technically the 60th st tube. But, because the nomenclature of the station is 59th st, it's easier to refer to the trains as "via 59th". The alternative routing is "via 63rd" if they went over the F.
  6. Try boarding a northbound R train at 57/7 at about 6pm when the train before short-turned. I can find pictures of the dangerously crowded platforms there when this happens if you like. The following R train becomes a stuffed-to-the-gills slow mover, with delays at every station it hits. Stuffed as it gets, there will still be passengers waiting on the platform for the 2nd following R train that could not fit on the first. If service needs to be cut, it needs to be done such that trains flow at regular intervals. Instead of 8 minute headways, make them 10 minute headways. Lets say you need to go from 8tph to 6tph... You could make the intervals 10-10-10-10-10-10 by changing departures... or by dropping trains you could leave the intervals as is but with dropouts. 8-8-16-8-8-16 would drop every 3rd train. Now that train who's leader was 16 minutes ahead is crowded. Dwell times increase. Before long it's 20 minutes behind. Now situations become quite bad. Short turning trains is not the answer. The R is the least frequent service on the broadway line as it is. Point is: Doing this will delay the N Q and R to such a spectacular degree that there's no conceivable benefit worth the cost.
  7. Are you insane? Short turn most of the locals? How are people on the local supposed to get home from work? Guess which R's aren't gonna short turn? Guess which E's and F's aren't running local? You can't just "send a few expresses down the local". People have to get ON a train in manhattan to be able to transfer to a train in queens.
  8. I'm really not an authority on the subject, but as far as I know the reason 32/42 sets cannot run through montague was a physical clearance issue. This checks out, since the R46 and later cars are more "tubular" in shape whereas the R32s are very rectangular.... If we want to get all technical about it, the R32s are 9' 8-7/8" at the top of the doors whereas the R46 is 9' even at the same height. Links on dimensions: http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/caption.pl?/img/cars/sheet-r32.jpg http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/caption.pl?/img/cars/sheet-r46.jpg But if someone with knowledge that isn't an overheard remark combined with inference and speculation knows my speculation here to be false, please, do not hesitate to correct me. (Logic would dictate, however, that you would not be allowed to.)
  9. Hmm, you're right, perhaps that's another year. I had never expected to see them until 2017 but who knows where I got that Idea. Also - lord knows I didn't read the whole document After reading news here I was curious and searched the pdf for "R179", that's how I found the (expected) delivery date.
  10. Actually there's not ANOTHER delay in the R179 order, there was only the initial delay. From the PDF: Page 387: (emphasis mine) Page 155: (emphasis mine) They're keeping the R32's because they need more cars - there doesn't seem to be another serious delay, as far as I can see. Wasn't 2017 the date as of the last delay?
  11. Am I hallucinating or did I see an R46 on the N/Q in astoria this morning?
  12. Well, that N train with mechanical problems was NOT brakes in emergency. I don't know exactly what was wrong with the train (r160's) , but I saw (and heard) something I've never encountered before. The train was slowly proceeding up the express track as I waited at 49st. The front lights were red, and the headlights were off. There was an employee in a vest in the cab - not operating - but relaying commands to someone else via walkie-talkie. As the train went by the headlights were on in the front of the second set, and someone was operating the train from the conductor's position. Never seen THAT before. Snapped some photos but they aren't great. Moral of the story, whatever went wrong with THAT train, it could not be operated from the operating motor.
  13. Barrel of laughs. 908 Romeo Continental rerouted via 63rd this morning to bypass the mess at 5th av. Except queensboro master didn't tell city hall we were coming. And nobody told the crew that G3 Track is BMT territory south of lex/63. There we sat for 20 minutes as the crew called the wrong tower on the wrong channel wondering where the hell their lineup was. Barrel of laughs. I got ROYALLY chewed out at work for being late, no less.
  14. I love when people get mad at me for trying to help. Today the very-late train I was on got sent express-on-the-local 72-96-125 - and when this was announced there was a mad rush of people trying to get off at 72. This guy comes bolting off a 3 thad just pulled in is trying to shove through the crowd to get on at 72 and I tell him "Don't bother, it's going express to 125" He audibly scoffs. "The 1 is the local train, moron. It's on the local track." I pause for a second "Oh, my mistake". He puts in his headphones and assuredly didn't hear the conductors announcements. I trust he enjoyed his roundabout trip.
  15. I thought it already happened. Saw at least 4 sets of R160 on the C Tuesday
  16. The only reason they were there last week was because the Q was short-turning at 57/7 due to GO in astoria 10am-3pm. There's a full-weekend GO scheduled for this weekend. Cannot come soon enough.
  17. That show's not allowed to film in my neighborhood anymore because of me They towed my car from a street they didn't have a permit to close for parking. In fairness I was only trying to find out what streets they DID have a permit for, but, apparently it turned into a whole thing. Totally off topic...
  18. And now the N/Q is down to QBP. What is going on out there?
  19. Seriously. It's like: don't even bother. And two weeks of this sh*t is too much to bear.
  20. I saw an uptown E at 34 on bmt Broadway at about 7 pm, so. Yea
  21. Actually if you look, they just released version 2 for mac. It doesn't have the 3d cab view, but it's fairly cool. Since it's free it's worth a download. Bear in mind it only has 4 interlocking, 2 of them fake. But you can conceivably make your own. just not easily.
  22. Actually the vast majority of the capital program contracts are for maintenance of the existing system. Here, you can review the entire program. For sure, some of it is SAS, some of it is 7 extension and CBTC. But a hell of a lot of it is general rehab, replacement, and upgrades. I'm not saying the capital program is being run perfectly (far from it) But, I don't think they're proceeding with, if you'll pardon the expression, "Tunnel Vision"
  23. I think there would be significant push against it from a significant nimby contingent.
  24. Example: Passengers on train are rioting. Example: Showtime Folks! Example: basically any crime actively being comitted on the train. it's a bit of a catch-all. but RTO isn't the cops.
  25. Specifically it refers to not just a person on the tracks (which could be a 12-10) but a person on the tracks, then struck by a train. Or, officially "Passenger Under Train" It's bad. See attached.
