Currently in school car on the 0700-1500 schedule. YX begins in a few weeks, will it follow the same schedule?

Looking at my journal, I was put in the PM for YX and then they switched me to midnights for the last two days right before the signal exam.

You're going to be put in a tour that's available. Especially if there's multiple classes YXing at the same time. My class didn't have the weekend since the previous class were still YXing.

Anyone know how I can get a sick form? Heard a whole class went out sick but they didn’t give us a sick form or tell us how we can get one. Thanks. List #244X. I’m in school car for my second week.

It is on the TENS website which you should have access to. Otherwise, ask your TSS to print out one for you. From this point on, most if not all questions you have should be directed to your TSS or a union rep.

Hey Guys, need some help… I had my Pre employment today and had been sent back home because apparently my social security card first name spelling was off by one letter and doesn’t match the rest of my ID’s … they said get a new updated SS card. They gave me a document to make another Pre employment appointment when I get it all settled.. SS is backed up and it won’t happen until end of February.. is 3 - 4 months okay? Will my spot still be held for me? Is there a limit to how long they will hold my spot?

    Thank you

This may seem a bit farfetch, but I would try to contact your Congressmember by phone and see if they can help on their end.

Unfortunately, Transit will not hold a spot for you. Good luck.

How fast MTA issues uniforms to the new hires? They take your measurements during the first week of training?

They take your measurements during schoolcar. However it is currently slow. Transit just recently changed their uniform vendor and they are still ramping up production. However, 130 Livingston and some terminals will have spare uniforms handy. Just hopefully in your size.

Thank you for the info. 3 days in advance that's good, somebody had told me that they tell you the day before. Are you still on the midnight tour now?

Just to give background. When I came out of schoolcar, they threw me into the midnight tour along with several classmates despite my asking for the PM as my top choice in my preference sheet.  A few months later, a classmate of my submitted a request to switch to the AM tour and got it, and I did the same thing and went to PMs. Edit: Keep in mind, this was at the height of the pandemic when there were tons of jobs available. That may not be true for you as train operators ahead of you graduate out of schoolcar and fill the holes.

I am currently working a pick job I won from the vacancy bids. When a new pick starts, there will be jobs available to bid as people retire or are out on restriction. My train operator is out on medical leave and probably won't be back for awhile so I should be able to keep it until the current pick ends coming up next month.

Work 4 hours at night, but get pay for 8 hours? Do I understand it right?

    52 minutes ago, JJ2021 said:

Or they could finish work at 2202 if they work PM tour.

This was when I was still on the midnight tour as XX last year.

Oh ok I get it so they assigne you the overtime hours in advance. Thank you.

You'll know what your job is 3 days in advance for the most part. There are 8 hour jobs and as you can see above, there are "penalty" jobs that pay more than 8 hours.

  7. 2 hours ago, FilippoSironi said:

Right I understand. I meant what is non-negotiable overtime?

Your typical week can look something like this.

Note: Top part is night differential. Bottom is the hours paid for the job.

    Hey everyone!

i went through my pre-employment and medical exam. I was suppose to start November 1st but told them I was unable to due to the short notice. I asked when the next class was but was old there wasn’t any on the schedule. Do any of you happen to know? Should I have just started when asked to?

    thanks! :)

Unfortunately, you're just going to have to wait again.

By the way, unless you really liked your employer, a two week notice is more of a courtesy than a requirement.

Question for those of you on the job already. I’m supposed to report to T/O school at 7 AM. Did you keep the same schedule after training as well?

Unfortunately, you will not. The subway runs 24/7. You will be at the mercy of the crew office in any tour and reporting location of your division. You will not have a set time and location until you get to pick a job or win a job on the vacancy bid.

This waiting game stressful lol waiting patiently everyday for the email or phone call for the medical

Yea, I hear ya. When I got the call for my first drug test, they said there were classes in November and December of 2018. But January came and I heard nothing back so I thought I messed something up or failed the drug test and thought it was the end of it. Then in April they sent another letter out of nowhere to get drug tested again. Their lack of communication of offering updates is certainly not good.

Thank you guys in advance list #40xx

IIRC, you should stay at Tier 4. Train Operator/Conductor are currently Tier 6.

I begin training on Monday and just found out that I left one minor conviction off of my application due to an error at the courthouse with my paper work. I emailed RTO employment opportunities but have not gotten a response. I informed them of the situation and sent a copy of the disposition letter. It was for a open container from ten years ago. Any advice from any current or past employees. Thanks.

It sounds like you did your due diligence. You didn't try to hide it and sent the information along.

I'm so happy to have found and be on this forum. I'm super new here so Im so glad to meet everyone.

I did pre-employment recently in Livingston and waiting for medical.
I got a bunch of questions if any veteran or new operators wants to answer, I will be so happy!

I'm sorry if it's too much questions.  I am SUPER nervous/anxious because I have always been working in a sheltered office environment all my life so please understand, some of these questions might seem ignorant, if they are...i'm really really sorry in advance.

    1)  How to deal with bullies on the job? Just ignore and carry on? I don't handle bullies very well, i have worked in some really toxic companies before and it was very bad for your mental health.  I have learned to deal with them though.
    2)  Even if you use your cell phone for emergencies in the cab in "secret", you will be fired on the spot is this correct? I'm asking because I am assuming there are cameras in terminals and the control tower can see you use your cell phone?  I am paranoid and I think it's best to leave cell phone at home?
    3)  I'm really really scared about the third rail. Do I have to walk on top of / around the 3rd rail a lot?
    4)  I am able to arrange an apartment and live in Manhattan if need be...so is it best to go to A Division?
    5)  I'm afraid of bad neighborhoods (honestly I have never been in one all my life), and I see that these Yards are usually in the outskirts of town. Should I Be worried? AKA: going home late at night after being on the road - and then i have to take mass transit home from those Yards sometimes in the early AM - should I fear for my safety?  I am not tall / nor big / you can say I look like I cannot defend myself.
    6)  If I have a 12-9 incident as I read in the older posts, am I forced to take an Unpaid leave of absence indefinitely?
    7)  Are you forced to join the Union?  Or can you not join the union? Are their PROS for NOT joining? Or would the decision for this be a no-brainer once / if I start?
    8)  Are train ops allowed to wear sunglasses during the day when they are outside on the rails?

Again sorry for the rant as I'm not familiar with the culture here and sorry for sounding like a total ignoramus.  I appreciate if anyone answers any of my questions that will for sure, help me decide if this career is right for me!

    Thanks a bunch!!!

    1. Entirely up to you. You can file a complaint with the TD, superintendent, union, etc and have it on record and investigated. In the end, you shouldn't have much trouble down here unless you're looking for it.

    2. It has been changed that at minimum you will get days on the street. No need to leave the cell phone at home. For the most part, don't have it out in the cab.

    3. If you can lift your feet, you can step over the third rail.

    4. As written extensively before, most of the reporting locations for the A division is in the Bronx. B division pretty much everywhere else. What will matter is whether you have a car or not and what part of Manhattan. That's entirely up to you to decide whether you want to travel to the various locations you will be coming from.

    5. From what I read from others, Pitkin, Livonia, and Lenox yards can be dangerous. Do what you gotta do.

  14. 11 minutes ago, BrooklynN said:

They assign you a division or you can choose? Also can you switch division? or would stay for the whole career?

Depends on what they need. If they let you choose, it will go by your seniority. You are allowed to switch divisions including going to the C division aka work trains/refuse/etc after two years. Transferring divisions or anything that requires training for that matter will require returning to schoolcar.

Myself personally, I was one of the last few to allow to pick the B before everybody else got thrown into the A division.

Good morning does anyone know what to expect when you go back for medical hold? I’m suppose to go back this Tuesday at 11am.

The front desk will direct you to the waiting area for the MAC. You will hand your medical results to the MAC receptionist. When the doctor sees you, they'll have already gone over the results and cleared you, and you will be directed back to the other side of the floor to be appointed by Ms. Vargas.

There was an issue with some of the questions. I don't have the letter anymore but I wrote down the new number.  So which number do they follow list or certified? If list then what is the certified number for?

The certified number is for the people currently in consideration for the job. Your list number does not change.

48 hours and I still can't get on the boot website

Ms. Vargas tells everyone it'll take a bit of time. You'll probably be at PS248 for a week or two before you're sent out to the yards, so you'll have time as they send it out next day air. If you can't order by next week, I would definitely inform schoolcar.

Does one division have more overtime than the other or are they both as busy?

I would base your decision to join a division by reporting location rather than OT. That said, there's plenty of open jobs in both right now due to the shortage of T/O. Either the dispatcher will ask you to do an extra trip or cover a switching/yard job. or you can call the crew office if there's anything open outside of the location you're clearing from. The surefire way to do overtime is to call the crew office for a job on your RDO.

Okay my question is … can you bring in a letter from your doctor to the medical? That way if you know you have any issues they won’t put you on hold? Like I usually always fail the Ekg but I’m perfectly healthy nothing wrong with me. Are notes allowed before hand from a cardiologist or no?

They will likely want the test results itself.

Greetings all. I'm going in to clear my medical hold Thursday. For those of you that know, do you think there is any chance I can clear my hold and get hired the same day?  Many thanks

If there are still spots in the October class which there should be, yes.

  19. 44 minutes ago, Brytstar said:

Who do you talk to about when it comes to your seniority number? I should be more senior than some in my class since my list number comes before there’s.

The seniority numbers were just updated. So yours should have been updated as well

If there is still an issue you can call a few numbers.

    Pick office number for T/O (718) 694-4292.

You can also contact a union rep. Try anyone on the TO list but Danny Hay. He's retiring. Zach is also out in Las Vegas for a union convention.

I am list number mid 19xx I haven’t received anything yet i went in for a Drug test on 8/6 i see people are being called passed me how is that possible?

Either you were sent a letter stating you were skipped due to the 1 in 3 rule or you need to contact Transit and ask what's going on.
