So you can score low and still get into the program as long as your interview is fine?

An invitation to the next step is good. Anything can happen from open house, signals and def to the panel interview. There people in this forum who made it to the panel and got a thank you for applying letters later on. But those who score higher in the cognitive test and pass the interview will move faster than those that score less. The invitation for signals and definition should be high. After they see the amount of work that needs to studied. People start dropping like flies. They usually 30-50 people to signals And Def. For the test date after usually around 20 show up and about 10 pass to the next phase.

Scores don’t make sense because they already called out low scorers before that

You have an average accumulated all the way from the open house to getting into the program. They don’t tell you how you scored in the cognitive. I know I passed the synonyms with 42/42 because they had that in front of them. I could see my score on top of the paper. The other parts i don’t know how I scored. I guess pretty high since I made it into the program.  That’s why you have to sell yourself in the interview. As for who they pick to move forward. I’m not sure. I passed, they said “IF” selected I would get a email with the next few weeks. I got the email the next day inviting me to the signals and definition.

tagged you guys, and wanted to know if everybody who makes it to interview at the end at open house gets invited for signals and definitions or they don’t pick everyone who passed for signals and definitions ? Why do they not call out names if they weren’t going to choose everyone?

All depends how you answered on the preliminary interview and how you scored on the cognitive. The highest scores will get called first for signals and definition. To move forward to the next process is at their discretion. Not everyone moves to the next stage.

LIRR is always hiring LE, they must me short of engineers. Wonder how fast I can get weekends off if I get hired if they are indeed short

Depends. Sometimes some new guys get weekends off depending how they pick their seniority in their class. Might be only 1 S/S job to choose from when subject to bid. But usually 4+ years

What's the parking like near Hillside?  Is it better off to try to do it by public transportation?

What’s this for? Signals and Def?  You’re better off taking the train. Parking is horrible around that area. you would have to circle around a few times. And usually all the side streets to park is around Dunkirk Ave. usually bumper to bumper traffic around 7-8am

If you guys can post the next open house exam for engineers, I’d appreciate it. I have to do double the work just to check up in person when their next conductor open house is. I need to go back when they have it just to take the math portion now.

HR doesn’t like when people keep calling to find out about thier scores or invitations. Just a heads up. But maybe being persistent will help your process. Idk

I don’t think too many people fail that interview. As long as you gave a response that wasn’t a straight no or you weren’t willing to learn, I think everyone passes it.

You’d be surprised how many people never hear anything back from HR

I don’t have the qualifications or skill set to operate a train with hundreds of passengers on it 5-6 days a week 40 hours each day. I only have a CDL for trucking, that’s about it.

They probably saw your CDL License on your online application and figured otherwise

I want assistant conductor, that was my primary choice. They were suppose to send me an invitation for that, but they never did. I ended up getting an invite for engineer also because I applied for that one as well. Yesterday I went to Hillside facility to see if someone can help me with the assistant conductor invitation and the security guard who saw me was mean, nasty, and uncooperative. It’s been 3 weeks since they’ve said they’d send me an invite.

Sometimes they’ll look at your resume and see your a better fit for engine service than an assistant conductor. There are engineers who applied for other stuff and got called for engine service instead. Even though they never applied for it.

I’m thinking about applying for locomotive engineer trainee, if I get selected, can I go to the open house to take the exam for assistant conductor also? Do engineers and conductors get the same exams during the open house ?

I think it’s the same type of exam. Cognitive exam plus math for assistant conductors. Also they don’t do conductors and engineers the same day. They’re scheduled on different days

So basically I was selected for conductor open house on a date, which I wasn’t able to attend. Do I need to reapply for the position again on the website using the same account/email or different account/email if I’m still interested? Or should I email the recruiter who contacted me and ask him/her to resend a new invitation? I’ve recently reapplied on the site to see if they’ll send me another invitation.

I would contact them and let them know that the date doesn’t work for you but would like to be given the chance to attend the next open house. Plus put the application in again.

    What's up fellas,

I took the S&D exam May 7th, unsure if I passed. Haven't received the results yet. Has anyone received their results yet or is it normal to not have received them yet.

If you passed you would get a phone call. If you fail. No phone call or letter stating that you didn’t make it. Sometimes they send letters

I got called saturday to start phase 1 this Wednesday and to do my panel and medical while I'm doing phase 1. Did they email you telling you that you passed the S&D? Just have to be patient. They go by the highest scores, they try to get the highest scores to start first.

They don’t email if you passed. They call you to let you know if you passed. And yes. The highest scores go first.

Anybody take the test today on 4/30/23? I was surprised to see that the signal aspect part 1 of the test was all 133 signals that you had to write the aspect. Was not expecting that. Pretty sure everyone on reddit said only 25 aspects. I specifically asked this question and people said that it would be only 25 or 30 signals for the aspect and indication and 25 definitions. I passed the signal aspect though anyways. But I got I think 2 indications wrong and pretty sure I got all the definitions right.

This as been covered numerous times in this group about ALL signals being there. The 25 signals was for the old conductors exam. Now I think it’s all 133 for them also. Best of luck

You get passed the indications/definitions part 2 of the test and they grade part 1 aspect test as your doing part 2. If you fail the aspect test they come up to you and tell you your out and you leave without fully completing the part 2.  I know i passed because I studied and wrote out every aspect, indication and definition so much that I have calluses all over my hands and they didn't tell me to leave lol

Back then they didn’t tell you if you passed or not. They let everyone finish due to legal reasons.

On the signals, there are some, for example: Begin ASC, and the aspect is literally “begin ASC”. On the test, do they really show the signal, with the BEGIN ASC on it? I feel like it’s too easy if it’s like that

Yes. They’ll show you a picture of the signal. Name the signal. It’s not difficult. The difficult part is when you have 5 different signal types for one signal aspect. People get confused. The hard part is the written test. When you have to write out the indication of the signal. In the written there’s no picture just text. Example: “Approach Medium - _____________________”. Remember it’s all verbatim. You add an extra letter or misspell it, it will be MARKED WRONG.there’s go the 100% to move on.
