  1. Medical is good. Dental and vision suck. We have a supplemental plan from the union that covers both dental and vision.
  2. Every test is different. They have about 20 different tests they pick from. The signals is signals. But all the other stuff can change from test to test.
  3. Wow. That’s nuts. We didn’t find out until days later. I took the test Friday and left for VA that afternoon. I got a call Tuesday morning from HR that I passed.
  4. That’s a negative. It’s going to be both in one day. 2 part test. signals test first then indications and definition test after. I don’t remember the time allotted. It could be anywhere between 1.5 - 2 hours. Not sure how they’re doing it now. When I did mines as soon as you finished the signals test they gave you the indications and definitions test right after. I’ve heard now that they wait for everyone to finish the signals test and whoever passed will be able to take the second part once everyone’s done.
  5. The environment is what you make the job to be. Are you the type that sees the glass half empty or half full? The job has its moments. Sometimes you’re running 10-12 trains a day. Sometimes 4 trains. Especially when you’re new and getting called for work at all different times of the day.sometimes you’re on AMs, sometimes mid days and sometimes late nights. As for snitches getting hired. It’s too much at stake for someone to come in and study just to snitch. Lol. We got good managers around. But you have your few bad apples just like any other job. A lot of the young guys become managers because they hate working trains and they’ll get a better schedule and qualify of life (this really applies for new conductors that become managers).
  6. I would advise to start definitions right away. Don’t wait until 2 weeks before to start. Start by adding the easy ones to your signals everyday. Then keep adding a few a day.
  7. Where is the Signals and definition overview being held? If it’s in Hillside. Take the train to Hillside. They would’ve sent the schedule for the trains that stop there. its street parking. First come first serve. street Parking is usually packed my 7-730am.
  8. You’ll get a BSC log in when you become an employee. You usually use your 7 digit ID number (generated by BSC) to log in.
  9. The email that was sent to for the invite to the S&D should suffice
  10. Your score is based on the cognitive tests and interview scores.then it’s averaged out.
  11. I wouldn’t think so. These are all different crafts. But for block operator, station master, yardmaster are all part of transportation department. Maybe you have to wait the year. I would think if they popped your name in the system it would show what you applied for. But for a fact I do know let’s say you make it into the program and fail out during any portion. You’re black listed from ANY transportation nationwide. This is what I was told from training.
  12. It shouldn’t deter you from applying. There are plenty of MNRR engineers and conductors who live on the island. And vice versa. There are plenty of us that live in PA, DE, NJ too.
  13. Just spoke to one my of sources at at MNRR (engineer). He said you need a 100% for signals and 80 for the indications & definitions to pass. Just like LIRR.
  14. You can’t just transfer to MetroNorth. You have to do the whole process again. For locomotive engineer you have to do the open house with cognitive exams and preliminary interviews and get invited to a S&D. Two different agencies under one umbrella. Different unions for both.
  15. You guys gotta remember. There’s about 100 guys invited to the open house. 60-70 pass. 30-40 highest scores invited to S&D. Out those 40, 20-25 will show up for the test. Out of those probable 10-15 will pass. If you didn’t make this time. They’ll probably invite you the next round. It’s a competitive job. Thousands apply including internals. It’s been like this forever. just gotta keep applying to any position just to get your foot in the door.
  16. Have you logged to MTA Careers to see what step you’re in? Like RedWing did.
  17. I didn’t create this forum. This forum was already here. I just contributed to the cause. Lol.
  18. Start with the easy ones. Then work your way up. That’s how I did it
  19. Good Luck. Remember. Read. write. recite. If you don’t know it by the midnight the day of. Don’t bother studying and get a good nights rest.
  20. Could’ve been something you said in the quick interview. Not sure how they score that also.
  21. In my case. I wasn’t trying to go back and stay at job where I was miserable. I have kids and wife and I was trying to better my situation. I had no choice BUT to pass. I came to this forum but there was limited information. I do believe in helping folks out and kind give an idea what goes on. This is an area where I can’t help. You can’t cheat and there’s no preparing for it. I remember when I went to my cognitive exam. One guy said he answered all the questions. Someone said “you failed the test then.” He goes “impossible”. Someone stated “the test is not about how fast you can do it. It’s about how many can you answer correctly”. But he swore he was going to get an interview. Sure enough he didn’t make it. He was part of the first group that got called. All those guys didn’t make it.
  22. During the program you have to maintain above a 75% average. This is factored all the way from the day one cognitive exam. I don’t agree with the system. But sometimes it doesn’t translate out in the field. They’re lucky if they can graduate a class of 7-8 engrs out of 12. Sometimes people see the amount of work we have to study and get discourageda dh walk out and don’t show up for the S&D and sometimes they drop in phase1. If you can maintain and keep up the studying. Great. I feel for those who don’t get call backs. It shows you guys want the job. I applied 3 years in a row. Never got a call back until the 3rd year applying. Don’t get discouraged. Apply to anything in the MTA career section.
  23. It’s like you’re starting fresh. They don’t care if you’re coming from transit, path, NJT or Amtrak. Gotta pass the cognitive tests to move forward.
  24. I don’t know anyone personally. Just the people here who didn’t make it that I know of.
