Congratulations on Phase 1. The last three phase two classes have been the sixth Wednesday after the phase 1 test, so if the pattern holds your phase 1 test will be November 2 with phase 2 beginning December 11. Good luck in phase 1, you control your own destiny now.

Wow! This S&D study material is no joke. Everything is on hold for the next 5 weeks.
It does seem overwhelming in the beginning, but stay with it and eventually it clicks.

According to this Daily News article it does not.

Before phase 1 there's a physical abilities test. After phase 1, you repeat the physical abilities test along with a full medical and drug test.

I just wanted to know when the compensation starts ? Bc i might have to tell my manager ahead of time .
Phase 1 is not compensated and is Wednesday nights and Saturdays. Do not quit your job until you are confirmed for Phase 2.

As for the background check, I believe it is done right before beginning Phase 2 when you actually become a railroad employee.
That's correct. Background check is between phases 1 and 2 now.

Hey guys I'm just curious rn , but whats the deal with drawing the whole LIRR railway from scratch?
Thank you,
-Steven Trejo
Hey Steven, hows the studying going? As part of phase 2 you will need to memorize and draw the physical characteristics of the entire railroad, including every signal, switch, interlocking, etc. They probably showed you Hicksville at the open house, but if you Google LIRR physical characteristics, you'll get an idea of what some of these maps look like.

I'd like to take a vacation this year but not knowing when I will be called for the Phase 1 test makes me hesitant to book anything. How have others handled this? Is it just best to forego making any plans indefinitely?
You could always take out trip insurance in case you get called.

Did anyone recieve an email on 2/1 for the open house on 2/12? Can anyone give me any insight as far as dress for the open house, i was planning on wearing a nice dress shirt, slacks and shoes, is a suit necessary? Says its a long day too i would to be a little comfortable while taking a test but if it will help obviously i will break out the suit. If anyone has any advice for the open house and the testing that is done that day i would appreciate it, or any tips in general.
Very excited, thanks all!
How did the open house go? Are you moving on?

thanks for that. Any advice on wearing a suit? a must in your opinion?
thanks,
I would definitely wear the suit. If you pass the two exams they will give you an interview afterwards and you will have an advantage over the many candidates there who will not be wearing a suit....or even a tie.

Thanks for the words. I’ve been all in since day 1. The 20 definitions come from the words and the Signal indications correct?
Good luck Saturday! Use your last day wisely and get a good night's sleep tomorrow night.

Great!! I'll just keep applying....and Thanks!
Yes, absolutely keep applying! I applied a lot longer than 10 years before I finally got invited to an overview. Just keep watching the MTA employment site and this forum and apply each time they post the position.

Retirement , just like you said does start that day. But seniority is king over retirement at either LIRR or MMR. If you hire on one and go to the other RR. You lose seniority. Which can control the jobs you want, vacations you want and more importantly money. I advise you just choose one and stick with it.
How does seniority control money? Pick of job with more overtime?

Anyone get any sort of response from HR as we pass the one week mark?
Not yet. I guess no news is good news, but I can't say I don't stress every time I check the mail.

The definitions are coming to me easy. Still not sure how to attack the signals. Anyone have any ideas?
I can't say enough good things about Quizlet. I made index cards but I found Quizlet to be so much more helpful, in fact, I wound up not even using the index cards. First I learned the Zona A aspects because there are fewer of them. I started by keeping them in the same order and after I was confident enough, I set Quizlet to scramble them.
Next I learned the Zone C aspects. Same thing, first in order, then scrambled. Finally, I scrambled both Zone A & C together. It took me seven days to get to that point. With Quizlet on my phone I was able to practice a few aspects any time or place I had the chance. Waiting on line at Stop & Shop, I pulled out my phone and practiced a few signals. I would never have been able to do that with my index cards. You'll start seeing patterns and similarities and eventually it will click. Just keep putting in the time and you'll get it.
One thing about Quizlet, if you decide to use it, don't use anyone else's sets. Make your own. All of the signal images are there, you just need to type the names and indications,

im really confused as to what your saying.. you took the sd test yesterday and they didnt tell you if u passed or not after u took the test? To my knowledge, everyone who took the sd test was told that day if they passed or not and if u passed they conducted interviews the same day as the test.
Is it a different process now? im soo confused.
Yesterday was the S&D exam for loco engineer. I think that's what JsunFlyguy is referring to, and no, they didn't tell us the results.

Yeah I'm doing my best not to drive myself crazy. There's been hundreds of people who have done it before. It is certainly possible. We have much work to do, need to keep the motivation in mind all the time.
Hope you did well on yesterday's test. Patiently awaiting the results!

Good luck to those of you taking the S&D exam tomorrow! I'll be using the weekend for last minute review, but I'm ready for Monday.
