Simple. You could just wrap the interiors like what they did for R62 in times sq (S). But does it mean "compatible with the modern world" to you? 😒

What he wants is for every subway car to be a NTT, but it wouldn't make sense to retire fully functioning fleets (R62/A and R68/A) just to satisfy the luxury of having a 100% NTT fleet. He sees other countries and sees that they have a lot of tech that we don't have. But what works in Japan doesn't mean it will work in New York.

  2. How many miles do the Orion 7s Greens from Queens Village have? Those buses are 15+ and I know that those Queens Village routes are long. Manhattanville also has long routes but its alot of stop and go Manhattan traffic. I know that the RTSes can handle high mileage, but I'm curious to see how the Hybrids are faring with old age and mileage.

Wow, I would have expected a much more celebratory fanfare for retirement of such an iconic symbol of NYC.

I wonder if they're not fully retired however, if we'll still see them during GO's for a while, until more XD's come in.

This also leads me to ask, how many more Green Flip Dots signs are left in the system? is it just the MV and QV 63, 6400 OG's, and a handful of MCI's.

Queens Village and Manhattanville have approximately 55 Orion 7 Greens a piece. And there's around 30 MCIs with the Flip dots. Those Orion 7 Greens are (very slowly) retiring and will completely gone when the 2020 XDEs come in. Imma miss all of that (RTS, DDS50, Flipdots). Those Orion 7s are the last remnants of old school equipment with the Green Destination Signs.

Here's a list of what I think to be the 10 most deteriorated stations (this is in no specific order and is also based only on stations that I have been to)

    1. Bowery (J)(Z)

    2. Norwood-205th (D)

    3. Broadway (G)

    4. West 4th (A)(C)(E)(B)(D)(F)(M)

    5.  6th Av (L)

    6. East Broadway (F)

    7. 2nd Av (F)

    8. Hoyt-Schermerhorn (A)(C)(G)

    9. 149th St-Grand Concourse (2)(4)(5)

    10. Chambers (J)(Z)

Got to put 21 Van Alast (G).

From the idea of it: the originality is gone but a memoir. Soon, the green flipdots will be a thing in the past.

Those 2004 Orion 7s are next. I'm guessing that they will be retired by the Nova LFS coming in, and the Next Gens will move into Manhattanville and Queens Village.

Those C40s may not last as long as we thought. Apparently New Flyer stopped making parts for that model.

The only remaining buses in NYC that have Series 50 engines are a few D40s running at LGA Airport for their shuttle bus routes under Port Authority. 714, 715 and 716 specifically. They sound quite similar to our older and now retired C40s, same axles and engines.

Yeah, basically over. We are now in the era of Hybrids and Electric buses.

That's up to personal interpretation... I quite like the new stuff

Well yes, everyone is entitled to their opinions. But you can't deny that the pre 2000s fleet had way more diversity and uniqueness than the buses we got now.

Back in my day, we had RTS with their distinctive sound (don't forget the ZF units aswell). You had Orion 5s with an amazing ringing noise. You had C40LFs with the best backfire. You had the Orion 7s with the loudest roar I've ever heard out of a bus. And the 2002-03 D60 Artics with a distinctive ringing noise that it made when pulling out. And when it came to bus models, variety was there. We had almost everything but gilligs. The buses today don't really separate themselves. The only difference would be manufacturers and design. Most new buses sound the same to me, all quiet. Most new buses look good, but sound meh. Another thing I don't like are the Led destination signs that mess up your pics. Now the future of MTA buses is looking like 2 models. The Xcelsior's and Novas. Not a bad combo, but imo, not better than the RTS and Orion 5s.

I most say I’m gonna miss the diversity in the MTA

I hear you man. Most depots now will have a 1 model that makes up most of the fleet and than another smaller fleet.

    For example.

Casey Stengel is most Next Gen with Some Xcelsior.

JFK is mostly old gen and some Next Gen.

Kingsbridge is a mostly Nova depot with next gens.

Jackie Gleason is mostly C40 with some XN40s

And then there are some depots that just use one fleet like College Point, Ulmer Park, Far Rockaway, or Charleston.

Nowadays you don't even have to look at bus time to see what bus you are going to get.

  9. Now that the RTSes are gone, what buses are you going to look forward to now? Are you going to fan the post 2000s fleet? Or call it quits as the DD50 era is over. As a whole, MTA Buses are whack now. Now granted, MTA is not purchasing buses to appeal to bus enthusiasts and their end goal is to transport people. But as a bus fan, I got to say its going to be pretty dead. As buses get quieter and bland, I can see many enthusiasts "leave the scene".

    Buses I care about now

    Orion 7s (old gens)

New Flyer XN40 & XN60 (They are the best looking and Backfire)

    And maybe the 4th Gen Novas (2016 - 19).

Everything else is irrelevant to me.

Ok since the RTS and Orion vii cng is retiring, what they gonna do with the picture of the rts and Orion vii cng on the depot sticker?

They'll probably just keep it. Unless a depot gets renamed or closes down, there is no reason to change a depot logo.

I mean isn’t MABSTOA also a different division too? But they don’t have different timetable fronts and still says MTA NYCT.

I mean I’m pretty sure the general public don’t really care but I guess I just focus on that aspect too much as a rail/busfan

    How the public sees it.

If it has a blue Stripe = old MTA Bus

If it has Cuomo Scheme = New MTA Bus

If its an RTS = Old a$$ Bus🤣

  12. Home routes: Lived in LeFrak City, Junction Blvd (7), Jackson Heights, and Corona.

    Q72, Q23, Q29, Q88, Q58, Q66, and the Q38. Mostly LGA routes

    Rare Catches.

I also have two more instances of catching older RTSes without bus time.

    1. I was coming out of the Chinese Restaurant down Junction Blvd (my home area around 37 Av) when all of a sudden, I hear a distinctive screeching noise. I look towards Roosevelt Av and see bus 8949 on the Q72. I only got pics from the back of the bus because it literally came out of nowhere in the middle of the Night for that matter. But it felt great seeing my favorite bus holding it down on one of my favorite routes.

    2. I was coming out of the GW Bridge and I saw bus 4964 on the Bx36. Keep in mind that West Farms only had like 10 RTS. So to catch a Bronx RTS out of the blue, that was dope.

  13. My greatest achievement busfanning was catching Bus 9302 on the Q104 out of nowhere. It was so cool because that bus didn't have GPS on it. So I was literally at the best place at the right time. I am all for untrackable bus fanning. It's not fun when you already know where it is. Where's the fun in that? But when you find something spontaneously, Its special.

You could just camp out at the ferry terminal until one shows up. Pre bustime era this is what I would do to find an rare SI bus.

The Queens Equivalent would be standing by Merrick in Jamaica. All the 1996 RTS from JFK would stop at the term.
