Thanks for the feedback! @2ride - is it a standard interview with the "tell me about yourself" with a few behavioral questions from the recruiters and time is left at the end for me to ask questions?

If it's anything like the LE interview, be prepared for hypotheticals. What would you do...? in this scenario, Describe what physical & emotional challenges you may face, etc. Prob also be prepared to explain why you would be a good fit for the job, it's pretty much the standard run-of-the-mill interview and if they ask you if you want to work all sorts of f***ed up hours in all kinds of conditions in all different locations, what do you say?

  2. I was going through the last month's railroad committee minutes and I stumbled across this:

    Quote

This summer, the major track work on LIRR focuses on the Port Jefferson Branch with an upcoming six-weekend project spanning July and August to install new running rail, third rail, switches and 12,000 new concrete ties between Huntington and Port Jefferson. And it’s important to point out that we are bundling all of this work on the Port Jefferson branch — the concrete ties, switch replacement and various maintenance work projects — under the same outages to minimize customer inconvenience and the need for future outages.

Does this mean they're finally preparing for electrification if they installing third rail?

theyre def gonna need to start the m9a order soon as I cant imagine the m3as being in that  much better shape than the m3s

I mean…I think there is a major difference between the two railroads in that Metro-North has multiple maintenance facilities across its territory but LIRR has just the one (Hillside complex). The fact that MNR took the liberty to overhaul/rebuild the M3A’s should say that they expect them to last a couple years at least till the M9A’s come in anyway. It’s all perspective, the LIRR wants to rid itself of M3’s and doing the bare minimum to keep them in service and MNR is trying to extend their useful life.

Just received the study materials for the engineer test on 9/12. Does anyone know if the test is multiple choice or fill in?

Multiple choice. Expect reading comprehension, signals and definitions (the only thing you can really study for), mechanical aptitude questions and attention span section.

  5. For some reason, it’s broken to reply back under quote on my mobile phone.

    https://portal.ct.gov/Office-of-the-Governor/News/Press-Releases/2023/08-2023/Governor-Lamont-Announces-Purchase-of-60-New-Rail-Cars-To-Modernize-Commuter-Rail-Lines

At the bottom of the article, it says “The order of 60 new rail cars follows a recent order of six new dual-mode locomotives, as the state’s rail equipment continues to be upgraded. Dual-mode locomotives can be powered through an electric supply or onboard diesel engine, which improves reliability, and the equipment can operate in electric mode, which reduces emissions.” I’m guessing it’ll be locomotive engines unless they’re somehow not correlated.

I think OMNY machines are starting to coming to the Subway stations now.  Today while I was coming home from work from Brooklyn and at the Flushing Main Street station there are usually 5 Metro Card machines to right and I think 5 to the left side (I didn't count but I think that is about right).  Then there are 3 small machines to the left and right side I think.  Anyway, I saw there were only 3 Metro Card vending machines (The big vending machines) on the left hand side and on the right hand side there were 3 Metro Card vending machines (Big Vending machines) were taken away and there is an traffic cone blocking the area and it is next to the Metro Vending machines.

Did anyone see there home subway station the Metro Card Machine (Big Vending Machines) being taken away?  I think we can make a list of which station has the OMNY Vending Machines that are installed just like when the OMNY readers were installed at the subway stations.

Yep! They're definitely preparing for the rollout of the OMNY vending machines. Probably needed to test it out in a central hub where they see a lot of OMNY usage.

I'm trying to figure out what they're referring to, myself....

The capacity improvements that they’re trying to implement to reduce merging points and delays. Currently, trains have to cross in front of each other to access their various terminals. That’s why movements are made at restricted speed.
They’re also going to build a sort of flyover track that might skip Jamaica if I remember correctly or goes on the top of branch that goes via Locust Manor and Laurelton.

Maybe the LIRR just never advertised this project so no one knew about it. I believe 2 wks ago they started filing of the use of eminent domain to get some buildings around Jamaica

How bad was this derailment that service has been skipping stops for the past 4 days?

Keep in mind that FRA is also inspecting this derailment so they probably had to gather as much evidence to determine the cause of the accident before the wreck crews could begin their work. It really messed up that interlocking, considering their reconfiguring Jamaica and its interlocking over the course of the next few months, this is unlikely but maybe they're even reconsidering putting the switch elsewhere. Everything has to be tested and approved before trains can use the tracks there but they're still trying to determine the cause so it doesn't happen again.

  9. I don't know if it's just me but the Luminator screens on 570-658 are not working or maybe a small portion of them aren't. I've noticed a lot of them might have the front screen working but the back one just says "Infotransit" the version number below that and a Luminator logo on top or the front one is just cycling ads but no destination or stop information. The Vianova ones seem to be doing quite well, no complaints there.

Did he catch them? Please don’t leave us in suspense.

Haha. When he stepped off to use the bathroom, another Flushing bound Q27 passed us but this guy was early so he wasn’t in too much of a rush as the first three were. Ended up finishing second out of the pack of four. Played leap frog on 46th Ave. I think betting on which 27 to finish first is probably more suspenseful than horse betting. I think what ended up working against him is that he passed the first two too early so he still had to pick up along 46th Avenue. If he waited till most of the pick up portion was done, he could’ve had it.

  11. Got a lil funny story. I’m riding the Flushing bound Q27 and we make the turn into QCC, there’s a Flushing bound Q27 directly ahead of us and one that just makes the turn leaving QCC. As the operator steps out to use the bathroom at QCC, he says “don’t worry guys, I’ll be back in 2 minute. I’ll catch up to those two buses”.

Guess they don’t want to be constantly watched by supervision.

maybe have a way to disable the cameras in the cabs that the t/o and c/r have so that they have their privacy and keep the unused ones on to prevent any subway conquestors from breaking In.

If shit hits the fan mid-run, I’m pretty sure management and/or the general public is not going to be happy if you told them the cameras in the operational cabs are out of service for privacy reasons. The railroads have cameras in their operating cabs (save for probably the M3’s) and those are held to higher standards due to federal regulations. Whether you like it or not, the cameras are in place to protect everyone and give the full unbiased view should an incident happen.

well, good luck. Read this forum, brush up on adding and subtracting with decimals, study your signals and definitions and you should be just fine. At this time they are hiring assistant conductor classes every two months. The next one is slated for August. They treat you much better at MNR vs Transit and the pay and benefits are definitely better as well.

just curious. Are you currently an A/C at MNR?

If you are, would you mind sharing the next steps once you pass the initial test? How was the interview by the way?

From the images, it doesn't look like it received frame damage. They would just need to replace the engine covers on the back and side, as well as the rear light panel.

Pretty sure they gotta at the very least, replace the engine if they even bother repairing it. I doubt that the engine is still good to use, no way that the engine covers took that much without the frame enduring some of that energy. That minivan looked to be going at least 40-50 mph.

It's suspected the driver of the van had an medical emergency, hope he's ok.

Damn, I fully thought the people in the van didn’t make it seeing that the van was totalled and burst into flames. Good to hear they’re expected to be fine.

As for the bus, I doubt they’ll bother to repair it unless they Frankenstein the thing, is there even an LFSA that has front end damage?
