  1. I was at home. Just finished eating my breakfast when I heard the loud rocking noise begin. I assumed it was the neighbor's doing work on their house or something, but I soon realized multiple things in the house were making this noise, so I was like "WTF".

I get up and realize the ground was vibrating, this was an earthquake. I move away from a whole wall of glasses I was sitting next to, and (in doing so) attempted to look out at the street. Nothing seemed to be moving out there, but I heard people scream outside while it happened. It was surreal.

Vibration ends, I go outside and see that whoever screamed earlier had vanished. I immediately assumed that others in my area felt this, and soon enough, my mom who works nearby called me about it.

  2. Really random question: after the (A) departs Howard Beach JFK on the N/B track. I hear this *cli-cli-cling* noise as the train passes by over a certain portion of track. Doesnt matter what fleet im on, its been making that noise. It's not harmful or anything, but im just wondering what causes that noise.

Today is the first day where all FR routes have at least one LFS in service. This includes:

    Q11: 9037

    Q21: 9022

    Q22: 9028

    Q35: 9029, 9068

    Q41: 9052, 9063

Feels like a new era is starting at FR depot. Along with the MCI's, Those Orions are the last of the old white and blue MTA scheme on Rockaway. Hearing about a nova on any of these routes was unheard of until now.

So Far Rockaway has been having switch and signal problems, it’s broke at least 4 times in the past 30 hours. Wouldn’t be surprised if we see an emergency G.O this weekend.

Yeah I heard they were having to end trains at Beach 25 street. Especially not ideal since there is no bus service nearby that area.

  5. I don't remember the discussion side of subchat that much, but the "age" of that site never fails to amuse me. Seriously, I think the last time I ran Windows XP in Virtualbox, I opened up subchat in internet explorer for the hell of it. It ran on that 20 year old browser without a hiccup.

The scary part is, he's not the first person I've seen suggest that.

If one of those things were to fall off a moving train while I'm waiting on the platform & gets me right in the eye, best believe I'm suing the piss out of them.... You don't try to deter stupidity by also doing something stupid.... Two wrongs is said to not make something called a right.

I know it's entirely a joke, but more than one person ive read on Discord has floated the idea of them oiling the top of the trains. The silly side of me would almost embrace the goofiness of veggie oiling a R188 if it werent for the fact that hell's gonna break loose once that oil hits the tracks.

  7. My thing is that I would (personally) assume injuries/fatalities from a few in the group would contribute to others being more scared to do it, but that is clearly far from the case. Conquesting/surfing over the years has showed me that if anything, its more of the opposite. them kids see this danger and sympathize with who caused it, did it, led to it, etc. It becomes a validated experience in their heads.

darwinism takes its toll on people in any case, but we ought to give some of these kids actual reasons to fear conquesting. Make the few who get caught repay debts for the rest of their life. I know that idea would not fly in any court near Albany (lol), but actually put their futures on the line, because thats what they are doing to us by messing with our transit...

Anything transit related when it comes to a crime should be on a federal level, I bet once that happens, You won't see this as much or at all.

I mean if you're messing with any kind of transit stuff in this state, it should be dealt with at the state level. MTA is a state agency. If you conquest, you get in the way with not only the workers ability to do their jobs, but also the state to do the job of transportation at large.

Federal government is too busy with congressional infighting as is, persecuting conquestors like that will probably be very controversial to say the least and like most things in the government, move slow. Besides the city, this is the state's job to do. Question is, when are they gonna do it?

Electric Railroaders Association.  www.erausa.org.  Check it out.  They have monthly meetings now on zoom.  Good programs.

I have had LIRR engineers yell at me when I was photographing at Penn Station, but never any problems on NYCT property, even in sight of police officers.  I was careful to stay out of the way of people moving to and from trains.

Ah. I dont know why, but since you're from California, I assumed that "ERA" referred to some mythical city over there that I wasn't aware of

And Yeah, for whatever reason, LIRR fanning tends to be more risky than on the subway.  Obviously most employees are good but then unfortunately you have ones like these too.

I have been a member of the ERA for many years now.

I am completely out of touch with questions like, "are there any times of day (not just midnight hours) that I should not ride around of photograph with my new camera?"   And, "are there any neighborhoods or lines that are relatively high-crime?"  Any other advice or pointers?

I just discovered this site, and I hope to visit often.

    Phil

    First off welcome Phil.

What's the ERA you're referring to?

As for the camera question, I honestly excersize a level of caution with my camera and phone wherever I go. being especially wary of photographing other people mainly. These incidients aint just restricted to high crime areas.... I will also look away from my camera and check the platform at points to make sure nothing insane is going on. As long as you have everything on you and dont get in the way with where commuters are going, you will likely be fine in most corners of the city. Of course in some areas you have to use extra caution (what Chris said)....

I've never actually had someone come up to me and tell me to stop filming, but an MTA worker has yelled that to me across the platform. Even though I was in the right, its not a case where I'm about to start a yelling match over some train pics. I just finished taking my pics, put away my camera, and fled the scene. Its all about judgement really

  11. I've always wondered this question myself. From a passengers perspective, I was amazed when one time my (A) got diverted down Fulton local to Hoyt, then it went on the (F) all the way up to West 4th, run local on the (C) track until 59th, before finally rejoining the express track at 59th. I mean I know that's because there's no track to W4 Fulton express from the (F)  at Bway-Lafayette, but still, I was wondering the whole time if this train was gonna make a wrong move somewhere.

I also sometimes wonder this when the (A) passes Broad Channel NB. There's gotta be some system preventing NB (A) 's from getting sent down the (SR) relay tracks. as that scenario happening would presumably be hell on earth for the operators (and certainly the conductor/passengers also)

  12. It's been this trend I've noticed as of late where there is a lot more law-enforcement out, considerably more than I saw years ago, but it seems increasingly so they are just standing there... even when fare avoiders do it right nearby. If that trend is mainly confined to the subway, it's no surprise that buses (which get enforced even less) have it worse.

This the kinda pattern that's hard to reverse once you began it, so AFAIK, the bus system gonna remain in taxpayers hands for a looooong time

You can't draw any conclusions that are meaningful with incomplete data. This is the same problem that the MTA now has.

    Agreed.

The Express bus pax change between 2021 and 2022 is a lot more dramatic (though not representative of) the local bus change. if ur a farebeater with common sense, the express bus is no safe bet lol

  14. Putting the whole idea of farebeating aside, within Queens, Routes running between Southern and Northern Queens saw the biggest raw pax increase between 2021 and 2022. The Q27 and Q25 had ridership that dramatically went up compared to 2021.

    10,879-15,618: Q27 (going up by nearly 5,000)

    10,766-14,181: Q25

    9,7161-2,894: Q46

17,627-20,592: Q58 (perennial highest in Queens)

    7,891-10,719: Q17

Between all these five routes, ridership went from 56.8K to 74K.

I'd note that in 2021, remote learning at CUNY and DOE schools was still going on partially, 2021 was also somewhat of a recovery year from 2020. 2022 was the first year where a good chunk of riders actually seemed to have returned on these routes.

Just saw it and omg its the best crossover ever lol.

It really is the best collab ever, on one of my favorite parts of the system. :D

somehow Geoff and Miles managed to stand under Rockaway freeway at the one time it wasn't occupied by a BMW clappin' it down at 50 MPH, found that funny since I know that area good
