Thank you Natalie for your reply. I cannot deny that I felt overwhelmed and had serious doubts after Day 1!! But I knew I was over reacting. My group is only 3 people (the other 2 have their CDLs and both have experience driving school buses) so perhaps I got a little extra exposure to driving on my first day.

Part of my struggle with turning is also not knowing how much to turn the wheel, or when to stop turning and let it glide and then begin to straighten the bus out. @Natalie did you start with just your permit or CDL?

I also need to get a better feel for the accelerator and how much I need to press it to really move the bus slow and steady. My instructor exclamations sometimes definitely makes me accelerate too much at some points.

I hope for a better outcome tomorrow on day 3.

Even if you go to day 10 don’t let that discourage you.

Once you pass your training you will be driving another type of bus that is way smoother and easier to drive I call it the blue and yellow C class .

take a deep breath before taking your turns , take the mask off if you have to . And push and pull that steering wheel slow and smooth until you master your turns

    good luck

@lornaevo today is day 7 and my whole class passed!!! Tomorrow we have to go to a depot in queens to train on some more buses or something!

Congrats ! That’s going to be the easiest 2 days of your career with mta lol . After that you have to go back to zerega and pick your depot

    I report 9/13

Too late to go to a driving school for a cdl, just memorize the alsaps (air break test) ALSAPS = 1. Air leakage, 2. Low air alarm/buzzer 3. Spring brake (pop up), 4. Air compressor, 5. Parking brake (same as spring brakes, but different use here), and 6. Service brakes.  There’s a video in YouTube by some guy in Eastchester that shows you everything very detailed. Memorize every step and you will be good .. Good luck

So I have a question about the training... is there a difference in training for someone who has a permit vs someone with their CDL?

also the training is 10 consecutive days? I paid for a lesson package for CDL training and I don’t think I will complete them all by the time I start my training at zerega

Do you have a starting  date ?

@lornaevo my neighbor works at Livingston and she told me a few weeks ago that she was looking for another job because she was getting laid off. She told me not bus operators though. So It sounds like they are just cutting back on clerical.

Our union day is going to be sometime next week that’s when we will get the details .

To give you guys an update from my class (8/16/20) all passed today on Day 7;  I didn't feel personally like the course was overly hard, just have to watch out for bikes and people!  Mind you for my class Days 2-4 were trainwrecks we all felt like we weren't going to make it, yet all of us pulled through! You just have to listen and apply everything they tell you, We had 2 Permits and 1 License in the class.  Supt even made me take the bus back through the Midtown Tunnel which was nerve wracking but like everything else they teach you, take your time and go slow!!

We have to report for Equipment training tomorrow for the Nova Buses and the New Flyers

    Wow ! Midtown tunnel! That’s crazy congratulations , I passed day 7 today .

@luiggi0102 thanks for all that info!!!!! So it’s Sunday through Thursday with Friday off? You’re off today? Ok last question, is it a lot of highway driving? I wish you the best of luck!!!!

That’s correct, highway driving Time  will depend on your instructor

@Ramirez1523 @lornaevo what is the first day of zerega like? Do you go out on a bus or is it just paperwork? Also it all day? Good luck to the both of you!

first day is paperwork only and you will be assigned to a depot to do your 10 day training. Im in day 4 now.

so far day 1 & 2 all students drove 40mins to 1hr learning how to turn the bus.

day 3 we did some highway driving (under heavy rain unfortunately)  , servicing bus stops and wheelchair

day 4 turning under the train tracks ALOT! parallel parking and backing up the bus.

your experience will vary depending on your classmates and instructor , luckily for us our instructor is great and has a lot of patience.

we drive from 6am to 2pm with a 1hr lunch and 15min break around 10am. bring water with you to the bus and something to take notes.

    Good luck everyone

So I did my medical today, finished the paperwork and took the picture for the pass.

I was told to report “in uniform” on Sunday.  Light blue button up and dark navy pants, does anyone have a suggestion on brand of pants or shoes? Any help appreciated!

Congrats ! I got my pants from old navy and black Under Armour boots from dicks sporting goods , they’re “tactical boots” . Those are similar to the ones that mta will give you later.

@luiggi0102 they gave you books to study? Sorry for all the questions lol.

Yes you get like 3 books . I took the picture for my pass today. Im starting Sunday at zerega. To anyone driving from Staten Islam to zerega for training, try to be there 2hr earlier to get a parking spot everyone else take uber or bus . Parking is not joke .

    good luck everyone!

I got my email last night for my medical this Tuesday at 7am with a start date of Sunday August 16th, 2020, anyone else?

I did mine yesterday . Bring some sandwiches with you . I was there from 6:30a to 3:40p. Make sure you fill out the documents that are attached to the email and print them before your appt.

they’re going to do a hearing test, eye and a ekg. The last step is Fingerprints (don’t forget the money order) and submit all the documents that are attached to the email and you will get your starting date and books to study.

I have to go back to Livingston Monday to take the picture for my pass , and report to Zerega Sunday at 7a.

    Good luck

How many folks are going into training with a CDL already? How many just have a permit? Any experience? Just wondering as I have yet to have any commercial driving experience myself.

You need your permit by the time they call you.

You’re already working or still in the hiring process?

I’m in the hiring process, I took my drug test last week . I know the process well because I have 4 family members that are B/O . Every night that’s all we talk about lol

  13. 11 minutes ago, Natalie said:

@young what if someone pass the 10 day training class? Then how much notice will we be able to give our current employer?

7 to 10 days . You have to try your best to passs the 7th day . Once you pass the training you are officially a MTA employee. With the 1yr probation .

  14. 40 minutes ago, Natalie said:

@bkborn does the pay go up right after finishing your 1 year probation?

You will get a small raise every year until you hit top pay by the 5th yr ..

All the depots are loaded with available overtime!! A lot of drivers are out because of the COVID 19 and mta wasn’t hiring since March.  So forget about weekends with the boys, family  , holidays and birthdays!!! It’s time to make this $$$$

I can’t wait for that w2 with a lot of digits in it

  15. 10 hours ago, Natalie said:

@luiggi0102 100k?? You have to put in a lot of overtime to make that right? Starting out I think is only $26/hr??

    9 hours ago, bkborn said:

$23.84 after 6 years $34 and change. Including holiday pay and the Ot you'll do, depending on if you enjoy the job you'll easily stack 100k a year.

@bkborn  the new contract is $24.87 and  $35 top pay , plus an additional $2 dollars for driving an articulated bus and extra money for driving pass 5pm I believe.

There’s always something to do at the depot once your run is over ,  you can pick someone else run and drive a few more hrs (don’t do that on your probation time) clean the bus , collect the coins etc just ask your dispatcher . The opportunities are endless to make money there . Good luck

Well I showed up this morning and because I didn’t have my social security card I was told I needed to be rescheduled. This really sucks but I am waiting on a replacement for now.

The women at the counter told me I need to email the person who reached out to me with my original appointment to reschedule but that person never replied to my email when I told them my issue with social security in the first place. Don’t want to miss out on this opportunity because of something like this!

They’re not replying to emails so quick , the guy that contacted me (Ronald  Saint Jean) took 4 days to confirm a email . Don’t hesitate MTA needs a lot of drivers right now. I’m sure that once you have the ssn you are going to be rescheduled quick...

Covid-19, delayed everything, we were supposed to be called a few months ago .

One time when I went down to 180 Livingston Street, I wore black jeans with a yellow polo collared shirt and nobody said anything to me.

By the time they send you to Zerega, you will be given instructions on what to wear as a 'temporary' uniform, so you won't have to worry about "dressing well" when the time comes.

Well let me rephrase that! Make sure that your temporary uniform its well ironed and boots/shoes clean. Tie on at all times in the building, that’s what I was told by 3 people that got hired 2yrs ago.

It’s not the greatest job ever but its a job that will put 100k+ in your pocket annually, so just try to look clean and professional.

Everyone dress up for their drug test? Lol

ill be going in without my social security card so I hope it doesn’t cause me a huge issue. Still waiting to receive my replacement

When you go to Zerega and your union meeting make sure that you dress well , they don’t play there .

Bro , one guy had basketball shorts and nike flip flops.  Everyone else was well dressed.  Be there at the exact time of your appointment, if you go earlier you will waste your time .
