Thank you & Terminal attendant. And okay I figured it would be a situation where I would have to just accept what they have. I heard the union changed things up , that if you started after April you can’t bid out until a year , is that true?
Do you see any open terminal position on your bulletin? That was always the rule it just wasn't enforced and they let new hires bid after 3 months but they stopped it. They want all new hires in their hired position for atleast a year unless you get bumped. Definitely have some openings at GCT.

So I finally got in MNRR railroad just waiting for my start date. It’s been a long time coming so I’m excited but I’m a little worried about the bidding and bumping. When you first get in, do you choose your schedule depending on what’s left or as a new hire your given a schedule? Also do they take where you live in consideration? I’m not sure if I’m gonna be placed at GCT but I would prefer it because I live in queens , couldn’t imagaine having to go to Harmon everyday ..
Congratulations and what job? When you first start you get placed wherever there is an opening you don't get to choose.

Wait @Thinklikeamango are timberlands acceptable?
Yeah any boots are good as long as they have a defined heel and not flat.

If you remember what schedules were those? Day, evening or overnight?
just curious, I’m really hoping that I don’t land an overnight position , but I’ll embrace it either way, just happy to get this far..finally!
also did you guys receive the raise in September to $24.11 like you mentioned?
Starting pay is now 24.13 for regular terminal appearance and 25.35 for operator. So top pay is 34.46 and 36.22.
They took 3 jobs off the weekly bulletin could be one of the jobs they hired you on
One was overnight, the other an extra job which means you could work split shifts ( 1 day in the am, 2 days in the afternoon, and 2 days at night ect...) And the other job I couldn't find maybe a 3-11?0 -

Thank you so much ! I got the job by the way . Thank you for all the information and tips along the way. If everything works out (fingers crossed) , I look forward to working with you.
sidebar: what type of boots did you bring with you ?Check out red wing and try some of the different types that they have, walking on the marble in grand central does take a while to get used to lol.

Do they have a lot of vacancies for cleaners right now?
For grand central alone we have about 6 open spots. Even if it gets filled people always move on and get different jobs so there's always openings.

Finally called for a interview for this
Any advice and tips will be helpful
Good luck. It's usually a 3 to 2 person panel interview, they'll ask you questions sometimes scenario based. Just give them your best answer you'll be fine.

Could be days, weeks, months, depends on the needs. I interviewed March and my medical wasn't till August. This was back in 2019 when I got hired so I don't know if they sped the process up or not.

What kind of questions do they give for a cleaning position?
Basic stuff. All the answers you need are in the test booklet you get.

If you already did all that then your next steps should be physical exam/drug test/ criminal background check.

Railroad retirement is one of the biggest reasons I believe, we don't pay into social security we pay into railroad retiremet see here www.rrb.gov
Here are some averages,
Average social security benefit monthly in 2022 - $1,666
Average railroad retirement benefit monthly in 2020 (couldn't find an updated #) - $2985
Also if your married your spouse will get half of what your getting from railroad retirement also just for being married to you minimum 10 years, so your spouse would get $1492 just for being married to you. This is all ontop of your MTA pension and start collecting at 62.

Hey @Thinklikeamango I was just wondering , did the union get to negotiate whether or not you guys are getting night differential for the new contract ? By the way I passed the Terminal appearance test, doing background now
Negotiations aren't happening till next year July I believe, we'll see what happens. Congratulations hope everything goes smooth and you get a start date soon

Urine sample takes a day or two. After they get the results you'll get a welcome email and all that good stuff. Congratulations and welcome aboard!

I have a question , let’s say someone like you wanted to transfer from Terminal Attendant - Ticket agent , would you still have to take the exam? Also, do you guys have to wait for a posting on the website that show their actively hiring or is there a in-house posting that only current employees have access to .
You would have to take that exam to be able to move to those jobs. We get a weekly bulletin with a list a jobs that you can bid for.

It's a 2 part test. For customer service jobs, one part is a personality test.

Reporting back from taking my exam.
1st and foremost the exam room was extremely packed, I was kinda taken back by how crowded it was .
The info session before the exam was interesting I definitely have more questions.
The exam was offensively easy I’m sure I passed , just a matter of waiting now.
as for the questions , a HR manager was there and touched on working conditions. @Thinklikeamango I know essentially the position is a custodial position, but can give a little run down on what a busy day would be for you at work. I’m asking because he explained it can get extremely dirty, and while I have worked as a custodian before, it was a complete different setting.
Definitely exaggerated a bit, the terminal never gets extreme dirty there's 3 shifts that keep It clean throughout the day. The dirtiest parts are probably the public bathrooms but even those aren't that bad.

Took me about a month to hear back, background took another month, then the interview took another 2 weeks.
Lol glad they finally sped up the process. Mines took forever,
Test in November, interview in march, medical/drug in September, start day in October lol took forever.

I will report back to say how it went . I hope your process is still going smooth.
Yup easy. Take your time and read everything carefully so you don't accidentally mess up rushing you'll be fine. Hopefully they start moving quick after you take the test.

Some guys do. You have to fill out some paperwork and it has to be approved by HR I believe but yeah it's possible.
