  1. You'll empty everything out of your pockets in front of them and put it in a locker in front of them. But it doesn't sound like you're getting there if you're not getting the vaccination..
  2. Then you're right, it makes no sense to go. They'll send you home.
  3. In-house and they want you there within 2 hours or whatever it is.
  4. Doesn't even take that long to get hit either. I think one or two of my induction group classmates got called for a random while posting. 🤷‍♂️ Truly random.
  5. Drug tests are also random besides the pre-employment one. So I hope this isn't a behavior you plan to continue, because it'll be counterproductive, eventually.
  6. It's also possibly a consideration of work upgrade paths. If you've got an inkling of mechanical experience and want to be a bus maintainer one day, starting as a bus operator might be useful to already be in the bus department. Other than that, I would much rather be a conductor. Nice to have a partner on the train especially these days. Being alone as a bus driver would freak me out.
  7. Someone said something about MTA administration being organized? I stopped reading at that point 😂
  8. No NYPD exam while you're at all ends of the spectrum? 🤷‍♂️
  9. @Mohamed call olha And tell her that people with list # after yours are being called for pre-employment and you would like to check on your status. You'll find her phone number in this thread if you search through it.
  10. They're taking all those tests, but for apnea they're only looking at your neck.
  11. You're right. Nobody should come here expecting not to work.. It just happens sometimes due to unforseen circumstances. My time is valuable and while I might refer to it as getting paid for sitting on my ass, it's time away from my family which is the most valuable time to me... Being here waiting for a job is not my fault that transit doesn't have something ready for me. So maybe I phrase it not the best way, but it is what it is . I actually hate standing still, I would prefer to be more active.
  12. You definitely do not spend 8 hours inside a train everyday, no. Those are the "better" jobs in transit (with 8 hours work) and probably a 10 hour or 11 hour shift.. and as you can imagine the senior people have those kinds of days locked down.
  13. I can't sit still on WAA so I'm always up and down stairs someplace. I'm not one of these guys to sit and look at my phone. Boring. Rather go upstairs and breathe fresh air.
  14. Bro we spend more time on the stairs than we spend on the trains. Let's be real 🤣🤣
  15. You're still looking at half the picture by only looking at rate of pay. There's overtime in all my checks, some of which is just sitting on my ass. I can call and get an extra day every week usually... Here's an example: veteran's day was the first time I worked my day off. The job I was supposed to do, the regular conductor showed up... So I came in at 11pm and hung out until I got a job at 5am. I took a train from the Bronx to Brooklyn and I was done. I ended up with 22 hours for that single day (included is veterans day holiday pay). All I did was sit and wait and do a one way trip. 11p-7am What's the medical, dental, pension, days off and union contract like? I guess that's all there's left to compare. There's plenty of walking here too, I've lost 30lbs working as a conductor,🤣
  16. Tell you what I heard last week. And this is hearsay so I don't know how true it is... My train operator was telling me he got a buddy who he's been trying to get to become a cleaner for years. The guy finally got in on last year's lottery, ridiculously happy that he did, because he's been working for hotels for 20 years and they cut his hours so bad that he had to jump ship. I dunno...🤷‍♂️ Business people and the rich will always use hotels, but normal folks won't when things are tough... Whereas, in transit, everybody uses the subway all the time. But I say this not knowing what hotels offer. With transit I can try to cross into maintenance of way and become an electrician or an elevator repairman or something like that, who make the most money.. I can become a train operator, a train service supervisor eventually... I really don't know what promotional path hotels offers? But if you know, I would love to hear it so I don't sound stupid when I talk about it next time! Lol
  17. You're going to have to talk to somebody that's experienced with the hotel business. I'm the wrong guy. I can only give you one side of the argument. I'll tell you what tho.. If the hotel gig involves any lifting and labor.. I would stay away from it. You kill your body with that stuff. In transit we just worry about what we breathe in the tunnels, wear a mask and stay healthy without a broken back. 😁
  18. But is Hilton going to pay you 10 hours for working only an hour and a half? I made $28 an hour before I came to transit for $24.33. My checks are bigger now. Even with that cut. Even with Union dues that I never paid before. It's your life and it'd be your sacrifice. I can't make your mind up for you but I would recommend it. If you can get through the initial crap you have to deal with. I travel 2 and 1/2 to 3 hours most days to get to this job because I see the value in it.
  19. What promotional opportunities do the hotels have for you? Do they offer completely free medical with no deductibles and no copays? Also, if you're only looking at Transit standard rate of pay, you're only seeing half the picture. There's a lot of things that bring a day up to 16 hours, 20 hours, 23 hours pay.
  20. I just wrote you a two-page response and it disappeared. 🤦‍♂️ So forgive the short version. Ugh. 🤷‍♂️ This place has its own language and its own world that it exists in. The best way to learn this stuff is to hang out on your breaks in the dispatcher offices. A lot of this will be covered in school car, also. When you're sick you call the crew office, who is responsible for assigning work. They have a sick desk that handles this. The MTA has doctors on the payroll, and you don't deal with these people unless you absolutely need to. They're not looking out for you, they're looking out for the interest of the MTA. Every 6 months conductors and train operators pick what job they want to work. As a brand new person, you're too low on the list to pick anything. All the jobs are gone before they get to your number. So that's where vacation relief, extra list and extra extra list come to play. After the pick comes a bid session. They publish a sheet with a list of all the jobs that have been vacated. Jobs are vacated usually temporarily by people who are out to recover from surgery, from assault, due to promotions or demotions or termination or retirement.. this is your chance to get something better.. So you fill out a sheet in preferential order of which of those jobs you would like, and you see what you get. When I did it, I picked 41 different jobs and I think I got my 14th choice. You'll keep that job for 6 months about... or until that person returns to work. Could be tomorrow, could be never.
  21. Please don't ever confuse questioning with complaining, though. I post a lot of questions about how to crew office operates but it's not necessarily a complaint. To me, if I understand what they're doing, then I'm good. It's the fact that it's all some sort of shroud of secrecy how it all works which gets people aggravated.. You know, I might not agree with how they do things, but if they told us how they do things I could at least understand it and accept it. Anyway yes, I have a couple classmates who didn't bid but they're certainly going to bid on the next one That just came out. It's the only guarantee you get in XX. Even if it's temporary. Even in the extreme case if I had to pick a job starting or ending stillwell? Which you know I hate because I just told you - at least I can plan my day's better. This process of not knowing where you're going to be 48 hours ahead of time is rough. Any bid is better than that.
