  1. So I was randomly looking through a SubChat thread and saw this comment.

"An R179 is a R211 with 1998 color interiors. R142, R143, R160, and R188s can trainline with each other. R179s cant. R179s are an experiment of picking another generation of parts by the MTA for the R211s/R262. Door motors without limit switches, only stepper motor feedback is the "revolutionary" design on R179s." (bulk88)

If this is accurate, then it is wise of the MTA to test these technologies on a smaller fleet, such as the R179s. It would be better to get these design flaws worked out for larger orders like the R211 and R262.

This is hilarious! However, this is a very serious issue that could have badly hurt or killed someone.

Can't wait for the R42s to come back into service! Change of plans today!

Well there are stickers that say “do not lean on the door” for a reason. I was on a (1) train before and the door opened slightly, but then closed itself, while the train was moving. (R62A, idk the car #)

Besides the point, this is completely outrageous! At least all of the R179s have been delivered, but this is ridiculous.

Better get your last R32 rides on the (A) and (C) line because soon come February they're leaving 8th ave. According to a rumor I'm hearing from multiple people

Makes sense the R32's from the (C) goes back to ENY

The R32's from the (A) goes too well it's a very obvious guess

An R32 swap between 207 and ENY would only result in a loss in cars, and is utterly pointless.

    1) ENY just went 100% NTT, you think that they want the older trains back?

    2) The 100 R179s on the (J)(Z) would trade for the (supposed 142?) R32s. The 32s are utilized by the (A)(C). By ENY giving their 179s to 207, they’ll only be used on the (C), because they’re four-car sets. The (A) would lose some cars, since they use some 32s. (The 32s are interchangeable between the (A)(C), but not the 179s).

    3) If the (C) is going to go full-length with the 211s, they would need to bump the four-car sets off the (C) to most likely ENY, ultimately doing another swap.

    4) Maybe the (J)(Z) has a large outdoor section, but they still run 24/7. With the supposed 142 cars, you’re bound to have some sets running on weekends and late nights. At least the (C) the 32s can rest during late nights.

It would be for the best to retire the 32s, with 211s at 207, as it would be convenient, but more beneficial.

First pair of 40 Phase I R-32 pairs being retired as well.  It was 3454/55 sometime first week of December.  It has been stripped as will the rest of the MK R-42's.  Bye bye to Jersey this spring!

makes sense to kill off 40 cars to keep the remaining 190 running

Actually, he said pairs not cars.

This would bring the R32 total down to 142 from 222. (80 cars retired). Wonder how the spare factor will be affected. Seems like there will be less R32 (A) trains now. Interesting!

    Actually they don’t

the (L) needs all its R143s and the 64 R160A’s that we’re retrofitted for its CBTC

the (M) will need a separate count of R160A’s from the (L) (240-248 cars)

that leaves only ~64 cars completely available for the (J). Add on the 100 R179s and you may just make service. The reason the (J) appears to be almost all NTTs is because they’re using some of the cars that would normally be on the (L). That says to me, car shortage. And remember that the R42s are still Chugging along

Except the (L) hasn’t been fully utilizing its “restricted” fleet. We’ve seen the CBTC trains on the (J)(M)(Z), for the past couple years at least. If spares become an issue, transfer a few R179 sets from the (C).

On a side note, aren’t the R143’s and R160s on the (L) going to be compatible with QBL CBTC?

Only 210 R32 cars are now active according to the TTMG roster. Did 12 get taken out of service at some point?

Very possible.  Which ones are supposed to be lost?

I could provide the list of all 222 if that were needed.

Seems like whoever made the TTMG roster doesn't know how to count. I added the cars up and got 216 cars, however the roster includes car 3629, which has been retired. So it only includes 215/222 active cars, not 210. The seven cars missing were: 3496-3497, 3669, 3706-3707, 3878-3879. Seems to me that they just made an error.

  7. A comment from another thread peaked my interest to investigate on the R32 rosters. I compared it to Calvin's roster and noticed that a few sets were missing, and didn't add up to 222. The following changes I made in bold:

    3354-3355, 3360-3361, 3376-3377, 3380-3381, 3384-3385, 3388-3389, 3394-3397, 3400-3401, 3404-3407, 3410-3411, 3414-3417, 3424-3433, 3436-3443, 3446-3449, 3452-3455, 3460-3461, 3472-3473, 3476-3477, 3484-3485, 3488-3489, 3496-3497, 3500-3501, 3512-3515, 3518-3519, 3522-3523, 3550-3551, 3574-3575, 3578-3579, 3586-3587, 3590-3591, 3606-3607, 3610-3611, 3614-3615, 3618-3619, 3624-3625, 3646-3647, 3654-3655, 3660-3661, 3664-3665, 3670-3673, 3682-3683, 3688-3689, 3698-3699, 3706-3709, 3714-3719, 3726-3733, 3736-3739, 3770-3775, 3778-3783, 3792-3793, 3798-3799, 3804-3807, 3810-3811, 3818-3823, 3828-3829, 3834-3835, 3840-3841, 3856-3857, 3864-3865, 3870-3873, 3876-3879, 3886-3889, 3894-3897, 3900-3901, 3912-3913, 3924-3925, 3928-3929, 3932-3933, 3938-3939

The MTA should REALLY Consider sending those Times Square (3) trains to 34th Street. My (2) got stuck behind one at Times Square for 20 something minutes because someone refused to detrain. RCC does nothing as usual. Its really starting to become an issue, especially now with the 3 being cut back an hour earlier.

Agreed. Riders like myself would appreciate the connection to the express from the LIRR during the evenings/late nights.

    A quick CBTC implementation question:

I’ve seen CBTC signs (completely visible) at some IND Culver express station, probably 7th Av. Is there CBTC anywhere on Culver? I immediately thought there couldn’t be, 46s and 68s, but why the sign? Are they in the process of putting it in now?

    Thanks

On the southbound express track between fourth ave and church ave, for testing purposes only. Keep in mind this is separate from Culver CBTC (Ditmars-Coney Island).

This was the 1947-1948 etc. set, which is also still original. If I remember right, on 1924 that rollsign is original but it's from an R62, with Akzidenz, not Helvetica.

Also, has anybody checked if the original floors remain on 1958/the 214x set that had them (incl. a piece of redbird floor)?

Last week I rode on 2123, which still had the original floor.

  11. I’ve been observing the R62A’s on the (6). AFAIK these sets have gotten the brighter lighting.

    1651-1760, 1766-1775, 1781-1815, 1821-1825, 1831-1840, 1901-1905, 1911-1920, (1931-1927-1923-1952-1940), (1954:1957-1960, 1961-2000, 2011-2035, 2041-2070, 2076-2085, (2096 ONLY, 2097-2100 NOT (As of 11/21/19)), 2101-2135, 2141-2150, 2456-2475.

I also haven’t noticed any R62A’s on the (6) that kept their original rollsigns, after receiving the new lighting, unlike some sets on (1).

they'll still have 120+ at coney island

edit might be 85 cars left. Jamaica has 49.5 sets of R46's

If 250 of the 258 five-car sets are getting CBTC, that would leave 40 cars for CI. I’d figure the other cars would go to Jamaica.
