I think it was 3864-65. Saw that pair many times, and one car of the pair had a orange sticker.

3820 has the same orange sticker as 3864. Also, 3818/19 have yellow stickers that are a bit different from the “orange” ones.

Maybe this is the set @Around the Horn was talking about? As far as I can tell it was a Pitkin pair back in the ‘90s.

Sure, for now two trains of R62A's but what happens in the future when that fleet is retired?

Well you have the R262 order coming around the corner. A few sets can go to the 42nd Street (S), given that there's 504 cars in the base order and all lines on the Main Line are configured in ten-car trains. That leaves four six-car trains.

Even so. If they didn't know that the T/O was dead, there was still work to be done, namely finding the man, who still could have been saved. That was disgusting.

According from one of the media outlets, I believe CBS?, the T/O was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai hospital, NOT on-scene. It’s very possible he could’ve died from cardiac arrest from all the smoke inhalation, but that’s yet to be known.

How the heck did this person get to video this? What is their problem? Let the firefighters do the work and STAY BACK.

Apparently there’s a couple other videos on YouTube (different perspectives). I’m going to assume that they’re firefighters on-duty, but maybe someone on here can give a better answer.

  5. I found an on-scene video on the incident, for those interested. WARNING: This content could be disturbing for some viewers.

This was definitely not something myself or anyone would’ve expected to happen. My heart goes to the family of the MTA worker who lost his life on duty; I can’t imagine what they must be going through right now. As New Yorkers, we must remain strong, through these tough times.

Yes, and look how the R32s turned out. They lasted 56 years, over the MTA usual of 40

The thing is, the R32s have been living on borrowed time for the past decade. If it weren’t for the R44s, the R32s would’ve retired at 45 years. Although, they’re a really good product for their age, it’s just a matter of luck that they’re still running today.

He saw on an instagram post but idk how true it is. I'll post it later though.

Just because someone posted a picture of a R42 on Instagram, doesn’t mean it was taken recently. Anyways, I’m sure if they actually re-entered service, you would’ve heard about it on one of the threads by now, but obviously no one said anything. Carry on.

Is it rare to find a R32 with its builders plate intact? Because on Thursday I was riding R32 3856 on (C) service and it had builders plate (post-GOH).

On a lot of the remaining R32 sets that I've ridden on lately, they've been intact. Some sets that I can remember are 3414/15, 3706/07, 3714/15, 3818/19, 3938/39.

I think it's safe to say the R32s are retiring in the spring and NOT when the R211s arrive. If the 32s were staying I think they would have stopped retiring cars around the 100-110 mark.

Also there's an R46 (R) about to arrive at Bay Ridge-95th street if anybody is hunting one..

The R42s managed to survive with only 50 cars left in-service for almost a decade. Same thing applies to the 24 M2s on the New Haven Line that we’re kept in service for a few years after the M8s came in. I wouldn’t say it’s the end yet...

With most of the R62A's retrofitted with the newer interior lighting, I found one set on the 6 still with the original lighting. 2086-2090.

To my knowledge, 1943-1944+1947-1949, 2006-2010, *2097-2100, *2154-2155 (2096, 2151-53 with newer interior lighting) are the only other sets on the (6) with the original lighting as of January 2020. I rode on 2098 on February 11 and still had original lighting. Seems like there’s been a pause on converting the remaining Westchester sets.

Its a rumor but I wouldn't be surprised. The (C) has one terminal while the (B) has two and the (N)(W) always switching. So in turn CI could Loose 140 R68's for 140 R46's.

That doesn’t even make sense. It’s more logical to keep the R46s at Pitkin, and R68s at Coney Island. The (C) can use the 8-9 R46 train sets needed for rush hours out of Pitkin Yard, just like how the (A) uses R32s out of 207 Street. That can save a lot of spares, and it creates a more uniform fleet. 72 cars beats 140 cars, and saves 8.5 trains.

after doing a bit of intricate looking:

    3376-77, 3442-43, 3446-47, 3500-01, 3718-19, 3818-19, 3444-37773628-3669, 3864-65 retired (not shown on the recent TTMG yard roster update).

3610-11 however is still listed as active according to the roster unless that is an error.

Last time TTMG posted their roster, back in December, it said 210, while 215 cars were listed. They were missing three whole pairs, one of the three are still in-service today. This was before any cars were retired, so they weren’t reactivated.

I counted the cars from the new roster, and I believe it adds up to 101 cars (should be 102, since they forgot one car from a mixed pair). Based on the last time, I’m not going to count on the TTMG roster. Also it list 5870-77 still at Pitkin, when it moved to Jamaica, then Coney Island already..... Along with other errors. It’s possible they forgot some pairs, along with adding pairs that are actually retired. 🤷‍♂️

A train operator for the (N)(W) in Astoria told me that the cars would be swapped back in 6-months because only the Queens Blvd Express was going to be tested first, and the R211s will be there in sufficient quantity by the time the local is automated. So who knows how many more R160s are going to go to Jamaica. Notice that the swap has slowed down a bit. And now there’s rearrangement of cars within CI. In conclusion, even though there is documentation that almost every R160 has to go to Jamaica, several things have happened:

MTA wants to retire the R32s now instead of in 2022, lowering the spare factor and increasing the R46 requirement for the (A)(C).

The R179 mess, requiring an increased spare factor.

    The Coney Island Yard rearrangement:

    - R46s on the (G) again

    - not as many R46s on the (N)(W)

there were at least seven R68s on the (N) today along with at least three on the (Q), and probably more R160s on the (N) because of the (Q)s loss of a few R160s and the lowered number of R46s on the (N)(W).

this also suggests that maybe the leftover R160s that will not (might not) head to Jamaica until the next car shipment might remain on the (N). Otherwise they would have removed the last of the (N)s R160s outright

You REALLY want those R160’s to go back to the (N)(W) huh... I guess your T/O fellow doesn’t like the swap either.

The (MTA) isn’t going to waste time swapping cars from CI to JAM, only to return them in a few months. I hope you’ll like walking to the (R) train on a regular basis.

  14. Wouldn’t it make more sense if they put the R46 on the (B)? The (B) has to change terminals between Bedford Park Blvd and 145 St. Also, it’s a weekday-only service. The (Q) doesn’t need to change the rollsigns, so R68/As would be more ideal.

@bwwnyc123 They added 34 St-Hudson Yards on the rollsigns of all those R62As that used to be on the (7). Don’t see how that would be difficult for the R68/As on the (Q). A fair number of sets already have it.
