  1. Any train going into a relay except the 6 thru the loop, gets cleared of passengers. As far as the operation, I'm pretty sure the system is programmed for it,but thats for someone who knows for sure to answer. But I do know that an operator has to be In the operation cab even when its auto. So if the system operates it itself, once in the relay, the operator switches ends just as f it wasn't on cbtc

  2. NJT announced on their website that the lanes at the GWB Bus Term opens tomorrow. Cash will no longer be accepted on buses out of the terminal (like PABT). NJT buses will depart from gates 11-21 in general. The passageway between the terminal and the A train station wont be opened yet.

  3. Are you sure? At Flatbush see I've spoken with T/O that gave had 30 minutes at least.

Its a minimum 20 minutes for Meal (lunch). In between half trips, its anything. A few minutes, a half hour, it depends on the job. Sometimes between trips you're in and out. I've done that a few times.

  4. I'm a rail fan. And when I was train crew, I started to understand why employees get annoyed with rail fans. I remember working on the A I had one kid (looked like he was in high school) asking about job numbers at 59th then telling us how late we were. I'm trying to make sure no one gets caught in my doors. Asking directions is one thing. I can just imagine by own crews in yards get annoyed. Railfans should learn their limits. Crews are trying to do their jobs. They dont need to have to worry about what a railfan is going to do. It then becomes a safety issue cause some fans are going to far. Trying to sneak into a yard? Absolutely crazy.

As far as the 179s, Ive seen them enough (I live on Rockaway). I'll be pleasantly surprised when I see one in revenue service. But once you've seen it, the next time isn't really special.

  5. My boss said that the axle loading of a articulated car would be too high for transit's standards today

Also to the dude who was stalking the yard the other day with a radio who tried to get passed the property protection agent to "work on the R179s" uhhhh yeah the police have been notified... smh

And on top of it it was the same guy who is ALWAYS creeping on the train too.

    some of yall never learn.

See. The problem is that most, including myself, haven't completed engineering 101. When its explained that the Axel loading would be too high for today's transit standards, its forgotten that 1)its not an articulated car, since both won't share a truck and 2) the newer numbers are based on things that none of us have put into play which, if we did, we'd be full engineers with a full logical answer for this. Its why they are going to test a ten car set before ordering a full option order.

  6. How when the BMT portions ran articulated cars and the IND tunnels are of similar width? How can clearances possibly be an issue when the system was already modified to fit in 75 foot cars?

Its not about the tunnels but more the tolerances of the articulation of the cars without the cars sharing a truck.

  7. A question that i used to wonder about ever since i was a kid, Does anyone know what the R means in R68,R160,R40 etc.? Surprisingly thats one question i don't know.

The "R" is actually for Rapid. The contracts are not just for revenue cars and a lot aren't even subway cars. Contracts for the surface division start with "S".

I believe it's for revenue contract, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

  8. i saw on another forum that apparently a member there took the (R) from brooklyn 59th to bay ridge ave (1 stop) and the train was packed to the gills and someone yelled at him to take his bag off, well yelling is rude as hell and how the deuce is he gonna take his bag off if he freaking can't stretch his arms out with out touching someone?

I saw that post. The Boston troll annoyed me

  9. Interesting. I have seen a southbound (A) signed up as Rockaway Park-bound, around 3:50 PM, skip 181 St, 175 St, and stop at 168 St, on like 3 separate occasions though. Maybe it's just that one train?

Out of the 5, 3 start at 168, the other two at Dyckman.

  10. Naturally. The 211S cars will come with the proper modifications for SIR service (hence, the "S" designation on the contract)-being cab signalling and proper door configuration controls. These are going to be NTTs of course. Son programming the doors to open and not open at certain stops may be added. As far as linking, its an engineering fact that electrical systems perform better with hard wiring, but as with PATH's PA5s, the flexibility of being able to uncouple cars comes in handy if SIR continues the practice of different consist lengths during different hours. Well have to wait and see until the specs are laid out for manufacture.

But of course this on one of the many reasons why the 211 Cars are coming in three different versions, with one specifically for SI

  11. Why on earth would they go to three-digit or five-digit numbers? They aren't going to have more than 10,000 subway cars for the foreseeable future.

Its never really about the number of cars they have at one time. They've used 3-digit numbers before. The current fleet numbers end just below 10000. Even with cars retiring, its still leaves their options open. SI could revert to the low hundreds, given the 211 contract could see over 1000, cars, seeing them start at 500 with the mainline fleet is theoretically possible. 5-digit numbers are less likely, but not impossible.

  12. Why specifically the (7) and the (L)?

    Because they are so overcrowded.

Is that the limiting factor? I was under the impression that it was the terminals (esp. on the (L) )

well, i know they were chosen for cbtc first for their lack of interlining routes. But given that the 7 is A division, the reason the L most likely wasn't chosen is that overall ridership on the A is higher, with a linger route. And a must higher range of passenger patterns, interlining and switching. As far as closed gangways, the MTA deters people from moving between cars. And the whole point of their interest in open gangways is safety and higher capacity

  13. R143 8233 and friends (currently on the (J) ) need to be sent in for maintenance ASAP! It accelerates very very slowly. OR the T/O can't operate an NTT for shit.

Or maybe they are under a slow speed order due to the rain. Trains slip on the rails you know.

  14. Brilliant idea! So we don't have to wait 20 more years to see more T cars ;)

Its more like they need measurements now so they can design and order the prototype and will have a better chance of fitting. It the prototype works then one of the option orders would be for T cars. What 20year wait?
