  1. Considering Euclid Ave is a step in the right direction, it would be a benefit if it did. At least they could then slide over to catch that they weren't savvy enough to get in Manhattan. Since it was explained that both the & run at 6TPH it was conceivable to short the at 2nd Ave with minimal conflict. As for car signage, it's part of a train crew's responsibility to manually change them over when the need arises. In a few years that will be a moot point anyway. However, your idea of increasing service and turning the excess at 9th Ave is with merit as long as there's no problems along 4th Ave because of it.
  2. Oh man. That's a shame. My condolences to the B/O's family and friends.
  3. Well, when a tourist is used to taking the to JFK and a GO forces a change of plans that would require them to take the how much would you bet that they would simply wait for that on the downtown plat instead of crossing over to grab the Jamaica bound ? Or the on the uptown plat if the was doomed by the dreaded GO terrorist? These aren't savvy NYers were talking about.
  4. With as a supplement for the it could be scaled back to 6 TPH, hopefully not causing conflict with the on CPW. The increased headway would allow for a smoother transition with the , even with the multi switching headaches btn 2nd Ave. & 34th St. Sending the via 4th Ave? Might as well go its normal route if it's going that deep into Brooklyn. We go from no service on weekends to extension to 2nd Ave to extension to 9th Ave or even 95th. I can't see that happening without a sacrifice of service somewhere else to balance the financials.
  5. Then the only real option I see for weekend serve to/from Bedford Pk is to terminate at 2nd Ave. Now...how would the be situated into differing headways btn & without causing too much of a headache?
  6. Maaaan! The tech they have for phones is just crazee! It's 544 now. That train should be cleared or at least the passengers have been safely removed.
  7. I'm trying to imagine how the route would be shoe horned into Bowery after leaving Lafayette. Can't access from the going up to Essex then splitting to go under the bend west and then into the abandoned portion from the east, not to mention the relay for two track usage, grading and other logistical situations such as drilling & blasting under Delancey and clearance of the tunnels; can't break/join W/O the and enter/leave Bowery from the west due to design and simply not enough square acreage to build it. Pete's maps illustrates the situation perfectly. If somehow a way was found to do it, the most likely would run local, or switch before entering W4th. You're right...it is unfeasible. Weekend to Bedford Pk is definitely needed. My take from PATCOman's post was his thinking on weekday service since the doesn't run on weekends currently.
  8. Depending on how long it took from the time the T/O reported the situation to command til it was broadcast at 1609, and your post at 1630, they might still be there. You know it was a . Did you see it on your travels? If so, good catch.
  9. 4 years, 7 months and 29 days. They asked me to come down to Livingston St on Feb 13th with this thick wad of papers filled out and every piece of ID I own to do a medical. Waste of my time.
  10. Got a letter from MTA today about Exam 8098. Starting pay is 30.0375 hr. Tore it up and threw it in the garbage.
  11. A better connection would be with the . Both lines intersect and their respective stations (Livonia Ave & Junius St ) are close to one another.
  12. Dayum! What were they rioting with to take out support beams, RPGs and zooks? Good thing there is no upper deck or SAMs woulda come into play. Them's some rowdy mofos. btn 242 & 42nd St. Runs Exp SB from 72nd to 42nd St. Local NB. For 66th, 59th & 50th St. stations, change at 42nd St. for NB local. Shuttle bus service btn South Ferry & 42nd St. via Lex Ave. btn 148th St & 96th St. All service at 96th St. from the NB plat. to New Lots Ave. Local btn Franklin & Utica Aves. via 6th Ave. Local btn 168th & 59th Sts. btn Euclid Ave and 14th St. Skips Spring St in both directions. No service at 42nd St & 50th Sts. btn Jamaica Center & Lexington Ave. via 63rd St tunnel. One question: how would the SB trains N/O 34th St. and the NB trains S/O 34th St. at the time of the incident be removed? Hopefully it was a night game that went into OT with a hella long shootout so that s#it didn't start poppin til around 11ish.
  13. Maybe so. It's not like I stand at the corner of Sumner Pl and Broadway every day watching all the girls go by
  14. An Orion V on the B47? Never saw one on this route before. Saw it as I came out of my favorite pizza palace on Ralph Ave n/o Ave N, #6312 waiting at a red light. Caught me off guard. B/O gave me "the look" as I walked around from side to front. Tipped my hat, smiled and got in my humpty.
  15. You continue to amaze me with your knowledge of the MTA rail services. Many times the accompanying info you supply is not just entertaining to a rail fan like me, but valuable for understanding the (il)logic of the MTA overall mindset. Thank you sir.
  16. Geesus! I couldn't find a parking spot at Newkirk so I drove to my appointment at Mt Sinai this morning. Would've missed my appointment taking the . Karma DOES exist!
  17. I remember my very first bus ride. It was the DeKalb Ave bus back when it was a two-way street. We lived on Willoughby btn St. James and Washington. My father and I were headed home. I don't remember where we were coming from or how we got there. I can only remember looking out the back window as we were going down DeKalb. Weird. Later we moved to Sumner Ave when it was two-way. Lived there for 2 decades. Sometimes I'd hear folks asking directions to get from one place to another..."Maaan, just walk over to Tompkins, grab the bus goin to Myrtle (Tompkins was two-way back then), catch the Myrtle downtown to the las stop then go on downstairs and catch the to 14th. You can't go wrong. Oh and don't forget to getcha transfer from the driver. Lata man."
  18. Wouldn't it be better instead to extend the train up to say 72nd St? That way you don't have to dead end the Manhattan "West End" line on the far west side at 14th St and there would be no need to transfer btn the West End Line and the extended just one station from 8th Ave. Extend the up to 72nd St and transfer there to the Broadway IRT. No need for two lines beyond that point. A small layup yard could be built under the WSH and maybe 3 track along the trunk for certain stretches to accommodate for layups. Maybe extend beyond 72nd St 1000 yards north for additional storage. I don't think the residents along West End Ave would be very happy with the tunneling and blasting and disruption along their west side "Park Avenue". Just a thought...might be better to go up 10th/Amsterdam.
  19. Today's Railfan Express arrived pretty much on time and packed with enthusiasm! Plenty photogs with cam-fones and expensive digi-gadgets were on hand to snap up the offerings. A shame I didn't have one. next year I'll be sure to have one in my mitts. I'm damn sure you'll be seeing the photos onsite before the day is out. As the ancient train pull out of Queens Plaza the whrrrrrr of the traction motors took me back to my first subway ride in the early 60s. The dull incandescent lights, "Miss Subway" and Chesterfield ads, even the SMELL...it was all right there. I was a kid again. We creaked into Broadway-Lafayette just as a Coney island bound D was arriving across the platform. The look on their faces said it all. And it could not have ended any better (for me): 30 seconds after we arrived at 2nd Ave, the Coney Island bound F pulled in. From old to new. What a wonderful day.
