  1. Where would the terminate on its northern end? With the using the middle tracks to/from 2nd Ave I don't think that's very practical IMO. 96th St? Astoria? Unless you want the terminating on the upper level at 125th St (think of the confusion that would bring), 138th might be the better option. Besides, with the running local late nights it covers all the stops. And for those folks wanting Bronx svce, transfer at 138th and take the one stop. If it were me coming from Dyre at night my plan would be to catch the Bx28/38 at Gunhill if I were going to/near Co-Op or the Bx8/12 at Pelham Pkwy if I were headed east or south. Even for 18+ months that's still too much redundancy. 3 locals to 179th? If you MUST run the past 21st at least turn it at Forest Hills. alone to 179th should be able to handle it. Did I mention that Fulton/8th Av/CPW doesn't need the additional service late night? The current svce is just fine. That's why the to Rock Pk was added once the is put to bed with running to Lefferts/Far Rock. The thing was deftly handled by CenSin. Good catch.
  2. I believe late nights is redundant. Neither Fulton St, 8th Ave or CPW needs the additional service. Select <A> peak svce should quiet the folks along Liberty Ave who' want a one seat ride to Manny. to CI along with the is also redundant but I could understand the possibility of Exp wkend service if there was a switch to send it thru the tunnel to terminate at Whitehall St. So you'd have FOUR trains terminate at 179th St? Isn't that kind of doing it to death? (To quote The JB's ) Is the really necessary all the way to Flatbush overnight EVERY night? Wow.
  3. Globalization is a fact of life in today's job market. When China (finally) opened their markets and their GDP shot up toward double digits, it wasn't necessarily that the quality of their products were better; their prices were cheaper because their manufacturing rate was higher because their work force grew tremendously. US investors sought out this market growth, pouring funds into China. Europe did as well. Cheap money flooded their markets. China devalued their currency in an attempt to slow a falling economy. I'm no economist so I won't go into further detail (and some of my points above may be a tad inaccurate) but because of high US labor costs, companies outsourced to lower their bottom line, which in turn caused loss of jobs and a dead in the water economy. And now with India, Brazil (before their bottom dropped out) and other countries catching up, those once high paying US jobs began disappearing. Notice how low wage jobs are now seemingly the norm. Globalization: neither all good nor all bad, just inevitable. This.
  4. On the conservative side: btn & both Rockaways every day (Lmtd peak <A> exp svce btn Lefferts & 168th St). 5. R32's on the ? Wow. Remember when they ran on the back in 1965? Well I didn't actually get to ride them until 1968 because I was riding the R9's & R10's btn Brooklyn and Harlem to Nana's house on the weekends. The closest I ever came to the BMT was the Myrtle Ave el and the R16's on the Broadway (#15) line btn Myrtle & Chambers to visit cousins who lived on Lex. Ave. Up to that point I'd never ridden alone on the subway. One day after school when I was 11 the urge just overwhelmed me so I snuck two quarters from Mom's change purse (15 cents for the fare and 35 cents for those vending machine Chicklets!) and made my way from our home in Bed-Stuy to Mott Ave on an R9 Express and back. Next day before school I begged my father for a whole dollar! On that day I discovered the REAL BMT and those gorgeous silver cars on the (and the & )! Although I'm more excited about the coming of the R211's than either the 32's or 179's I wouldn't ever begrudge someone's excitement on seeing and old car on a new line, even if I've literally been there and done that decades ago. Enjoy!
  6. BEWARE THE NYC CENTURY BIKE TOUR! http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/downloads/pdf/nyc-century-bike-tour-route-2016.pdf If you plan on riding a bus this weekend...pack yourself a picnic lunch. Staten Island will be spared this traffic travesty.
  7. I'd also suggest taking the to Hudson Yards/34th St and go up and out. Javitts Center is right there. Here's a list of upcoming events I hope to catch the Star Trek Mission New York Convention this September! Also, check out the surroundings. It's simply a must see place to visit!
  8. Interesting. In theory what would the effect of Queens bound 's terminating at Jay have on the entire route? Would the Queens bound trains terminate on the Brooklyn side wait for the next Manhattan bound train to leave then pull out or would the Q/B use the cross and pull in on the Manhattan side?
  9. Now that Bombardier is practically on the outside looking in, are there any other qualified manufacturers being considered besides favored Kawasaki? As I'm sure you all know, when bidding on contracts, especially one as expensive as the R211 will be, it's best to have competition for obvious reasons.
  10. Are they running short on qualified people? Receiving 2nd letter after turning them down 3 months ago.
  11. The boom in residential growth along 10th Ave alone would justify the new line's existence. Population is up all along the far West Side; Hell's Kitchen, Midtown West, Chelsea, TriBeca and Greenwich Village. Once the Hudson Yards is finished, speculation along 11th Ave will turn into reality (or realty). The 8th Ave line won't be able to handle the new ridership in 20 years by its lonesome. This new 10th Ave line will serve a whole new revenue stream and ATST ease the overcrowding on the 7th Ave line below 14th St. If the planners and schemers of these kinds of projects can't come up with a solution for the landfill other than tunneling through bedrock for 1 1/2 - 2 miles, then do what needs be done because it -needs- to be done. And as for the 'other' subway lines, I'm assuming you're referring to Spaghetti City in lower Manhattan. I'm sure the folks who live on the west side of West St feel there are plenty of subway options to choose from, after they step out of that yellow cab. I swear I didn't think just proposing a new line would turn so serious, but I can stand a good, constructive argument.; even if I am admittedly in over my head.
  12. Now why'd you hafta go say that? Now the folks wanting the pushed to BPB on weekends are gonna start screaming.
  13. So all those buildings; hotels, apartments & condos, Battery Park City, the WFC...all that is built on/in the bathtub and this tub precludes any new projects from being built below them? I refuse to believe that the great minds of this millennium cannot come up with a plan to get this done without having to drill to China. The stretch from Battery Park to Chambers (your southern border) is about 1 1/2 miles. OK, it would cost more to build than it would outside that bathtub. When the plans to build the original WTC were drawn up very few people thought it could be done and the costs were astronomical, yet the job was completed. Many projects started with only a dream and a pencil. Above Chambers the only problems would be the normal headaches faced in doing new construction. Building in the vicinity of the WTC complex might need cooperation with the PA, but if funding was available I see this as a doable project. I didn't know I'd need a BS in Engineering to defend it! Any problem with the rest of the route above Liberty St?
  14. I'm no engineer and I don't pretend to know the lay of the land, but I'm sure with the right planning, techniques, equipment and knowledgeable people, it's possible to drop the 'un' from unfeasible. I believe it's doable. Seems not many others think so. The thread title says "Create Your Own Subway Route!" Well here it is.
  15. I'm sure the serving the west side of Manhattan has been proposed before. This one has an addition. The full details have been shaved back to lessen/eliminate confusion. Full details. This new line serves the entire west side from Battery Park City to the Upper West Side. The new line will provide 24 hour service along the entire route. The will be split into two services with alternate trains going north and south. Late nights, weekends and major holidays the would terminate on the center track at 20th Street 10th Ave. Battery Park Station (Terminal) Liberty Street-WTC Station Harrison Street Station Houston Street Station Perry Street Station 14th Street line joins/separates here. 20th Street-10th Avenue Station 14th Street line joins/separates here. 33rd Street- 10th Avenue/Jacob Javits Convention Center Station 42nd Street Station 54th Street Station Lincoln Center Station 72nd Street-Broadway Station (Terminal) Any questions/criticisms are welcome.
  16. "Although, it isn't surprising to here this, given this happened in Crown Heights." What's your point? That Crown Hts is a high crime area? That people in Crown Hts have shoot outs with police on a normal basis so this isn't surprising? I don't want to misinterpret your meaning so would you mind spelling it out? People sneak in the back doors of buses in Midtown, Downtown, Downtown Brooklyn, Downtown Massachusetts, Bed-Stuy, Upper East Side or Coney Island. In this instance, in this case, the perp got on in Crown Heights and shot it out with two cops. That's what surprised me, that he pulled on two cops. That shows he was desperate to get away, no matter WHERE he got on. Anything after that are what ifs: What if the SOB's destination was Court & Montague and he was on his way back when the cops spotted him? Think he would've pulled? What I'm saying is this: just because the crime happened in Crown Heights no one should assume that shoot outs happen only in Crown Heights or only in 'perceived' high crime nabes. The worst kinds of crime can and HAVE happened in the best places. Crown Heights is home to peoples of many nationalities and faiths from Agnostic to Zenophobe, Christian to Muslim, Black to White. It is by no means a place of paradise; it isn't a den of inequity either. I understand we all have our personal views on situations varying from how much snow fell in China to how many S's in Mississippi. This forum we've come to love is about the MTA. We can argue back and forth about what car type ran on the Lex at 514PM last Tuesday or the type of tranny was being used on a particular bus based on the sound it makes. When controversial subjects (like this shooting) come up, we should ALL keep our personal opinions on the down low because just like in Crown Hts, there are people from all over who come here and the effort should be made not to offend any single one. As best we can. That's all I have to say on the matter.
  17. Exactly. Imagine a B/O seeing someone coming in the back and (s)he's just doing her/his job and gets popped. We all remember the whacked out young woman who punched a B/O in the face over a dog awhile back. In these days and times no matter where you are it's best to let the authorities handle it.
  18. This could've happened in Glendale, Howard Beach, Williamsburg, Midtown, Van Cortlandt, Freeport, or the bus stop where you get on the bus. People with guns ride the buses from somewhere to somewhere and points in between. Stop the nonsense, ok?
  19. 7 hours. Lots of thinking and planning and reading and imagining. Locked thread. Moving on
