I’ve never heard of the $1 metro card scam

It costs $1 to obtain a MetroCard. It’s a scam because it’s the only way to pay for the AirTrain (at the moment), therefore tourists coming from JFK have to buy one to exit.

Also, you can’t refill the 10-trip or 30-day unlimited fare options, so you have to pay an additional dollar each time. (The MTA waives the fee for a new card at subway MVMs if you’re trying to refill an expired (or nearly expired) card.)

Speaking of...Merrick and Springfield seems like a stub too for the 25 and 77

You know what, I didn’t even think of that. I do get why they wanna do that (terminating at a shopping center), but is it even worth it? Don’t mind the 78 going to near the JFK Depot therefore replacing the 77 south of merrick blvd, but I don’t even think the 25 and 77 terminating there would be worth it.

Merrick and Springfield is an easy place to turn buses and maybe interline routes.

It's the same thing with the Q30 and Q88 situation. Replacing the HH part of the Q30 with the Q88 is stupid. Has no one ever thought about traffic??? Keep the current Q30! I'm already out here waiting 20-30 minutes for a crowded Q30 and I am certainly not waiting 45-90 minutes for the proposed Q88.

I believe Horace Harding Blvd is one of the priority corridors. So, they’re probably looking to implement Traffic Signal Priority, and/or bus lanes, etc.

They need to do better routing like with the 26 running from flushing to cambria replacing the 27 via 73rd??? Yea I don’t see that as a good idea at all. And like I mentioned earlier the 25 to Springfield and having the 4,5, and 84-86 all run as rush routes is also terrible

Having the those routes as rush routes would definitely improve service.
One example, one evening I was on the Jamaica bound Q5 from Green Acres, there was turnover along Merrick Blvd but also an accumulation of passengers, the bus was packed by Springfield Blvd. It would have been nice if the bus could have rushed to Jamaica at that point instead additional intermediate “local” pick ups and increased dwell time due to the passenger load and red signals due to not running straight to the next rush stop, that a frequent “local” bus could have handled. (Doesn’t have to be the Q25 though.)

I was going through the last month's railroad committee minutes and I stumbled across this:

Does this mean they're finally preparing for electrification if they installing third rail?

The scope includes Huntington, a place with 3rd rail.  Wouldn't get too excited

Maybe they should reconfigure Huntington to an island platform station to have cross platform transfers, and more frequent diesel shuttles/ connections?

Truncating the 78/79 to Hicksville was the right move

You had way too much duplication of service between Mineola and Roosevelt Field, and you had that very lightly used n24 RXR E Meadow Branch. Extending it to Hicksville was the better utilization of resources as well as provide one seat rides to people coming from western Nassau to the shopping areas around Old County Rd.

what made less sense is when they split the n24

Yep, N15, N22, N24, N78, N79 and they all got stuck in holiday traffic on OCR, even more so since they looped in and out of the mall via East Gate Blvd.

extending the G wont really help those trying to go into manhattan

    Not in the least

Sure it will. Instead of watching numerous express trains speeding by while the next (R) is 14 mins away… they can take a (G) to the next transfer station for the (E)(F)(7)<7>(L)(A)(C) and vice versa. There are also many intra Queens trips taken on the QBL in which which the (R) is not specifically necessary.

I don’t see how the percentage of one seat B15 riders to JFK matters. It’s the absolute number that is important. If it’s say 3,000, that’s 3,000 people inconvenienced daily. It doesn’t matter if that’s 10 percent or 20 percent B15 passengers.

As for the damage done to Linden Blvd buy purposely screwing up the lights as DOT has done elsewhere to slow traffic, then complain about congestion and blaming the drivers, they need to undo that if a bus is out on Linden. They even should undo it without a bus.

Both are important, but if for example, those 3,000 people that have a one seat ride is 20% , then 12,000 already transfer and the B55 could potentially make it easier/quicker for 12,000+ people to get to JFK.

  8. Is the B15/B55 proposal really that big of an issue? What percentage of B15 rides to JFK are one seat rides?

On 8/8/2023 at 8:49 PM, BrooklynBus said:

I like several proposals. But I had them in my proposal, only better. I like the B16 extended, but it needs to go to E 98 St, not Utica Ave. The B55 needs to use Linden non-stop instead of using slow New Lots Avenue.

Not sure that will make a difference, Linden Blvd is not fast by any means, due to “traffic calming” measures, traffic gets stopped at every signal.

    On 8/8/2023 at 8:52 PM, Ex696 said:

But Linden lacks the connection to the (3) and (L), though.

    That as well.

Some more recent OMNY news here: https://www.amny.com/transit/mta-billionth-tap-transit-omny/

Interestingly the number of OMNY users on buses seems stubbornly low versus the subway.

Because there is barely any incentive.
    1) All-door boarding still hasn’t started. There’s nothing like getting on a “packed” bus with plenty of standing room beyond the rear door but can’t get back there because of aisle cloggers. It’s worse getting flagged by those buses.

    2)  Can’t transfer to/from Beeline and NICE.

    3) Can’t use on Airtrain or PATH. (Bus riders are probably more likely to transfer to other modes of transit which use metrocard)

From what I found from Greg Mocker snd with NY-1; the fare increase is subject to take place on August 20th. $2.90 for all local/limited and SBS routes, $34 for 7-day Unlimited with $132 for 30-day. Included in the subway system as well. Also, the Express will be $7

.....Still don't agree with upping express bus fare to $7 bucks

And on top of that they want to kill Saturday service for BM routes. No bueno papi, no bueno.

Might this explain the $7 peak City Ticket? Trying to push riders to the LIRR?

  11. 2 hours ago, Lil 57 said:

The (MTA) should send a reminder that transfers are still free between the subway and buses so if you’re going to/from the subway no matter what bus you board, it will still be the same fare. Only thing that changes is how many times you need to swipe/dip/tap your card.

Kinda sorta, the free transfer is now available for another route.

I'm surprised the MTA chose the Q4 to be Fare Free, and not the more busier Q5 (or 85).

The Q5 gets turnover all along Merrick, they’d lose money and probably would have to increase service.

    ————

The Q4 is proposed to be limited on Merrick Blvd, what if its a ploy to speed up bus service,  remove stops and decrease Q84 service?

Does anyone think this will affect (mainly increase) ridership at St. Albans LIRR ?

  12. Some opposition to the redesigns are disheartening. Keep in mind that some of these new routings:

    • Allow trips not currently possible without major backtracking.
    • Provide alternative routings between various areas, in case of service disruption, subway disruptions/outages/planned service changes, or just options if a bus is missed etc. Especially bypassing congested areas.
    • Open up new trips for existing riders & new riders.
    • Makes it easier to connect to various NICE routes, LIRR stations, crosstown Queens service and Brooklyn routes.
  13. Q44 to Fordham would be good because it would connect to the transit hub, MNRR, BX12/41 and shopping area.

    1) Makes it easier to get from the West BX to the Q44.

    2) Intermediate fares from Fordham MNRR are better than from Manhattan.

    3) Makes it easier to get to/from uptown without using the subway, especially with crazy weekend track work.

    4) Q44 connects to the Airtrain and is proposed connect to the Q10, a Bronx to JFK bus would be too much.
