I wonder what’s happening on the Manhattan Bridge Broadway Side. Every weekend for months now, trains are being rerouted via lower manhattan, yet nothing being done on the north side of the bridge. Maybe tracks are being replaced, or could this be a sign that trains may need to be rerouted again on a larger scale

According to Planned Service Changes :

    “What's happening?

    Track maintenance”

They've been running on the Q110 occasionally since BP got them in 2016. Not every day, but mainly during the rush hours. They tend to also show up on the Q64, though that happens more frequently than the Q110 runs.

Thanks! Do they use artics during UBS arena events?

So, I accidentally cracked my OMNY card and it completely stopped working. I had to buy a new card at the store for $6 ($5, plus $1 minimum balance)  then go to the OMNY site and select “Replace card” in my account. Replacement is pretty easy though, much easier than MetroCard.

Upon further investigation, the circuitry runs around the perimeter of the card apparently, so if it cracks, it becomes a bookmark.

Explains why whenever I ride LIRR conductors are always telling people to activate tickets before they get on. I'm surprised there isn't a system in place where if a ticket is repeatedly not activated that they can no longer buy a mobile ticket or have to immediately activate it.

What if the person is  just checking the ticket to verify the zones it covers, for a future trip, etc?

Ugh, paywall. Can you give us the rundown?

Basically, they are thinking about ways to combat Fare Evasion, in general, across their services, one of them being barriers at “busy stations” for commuter railroads to prevent issues like not being able to punch tickets on crowded trains, delayed e-ticket activation on TrainTime, etc.

    —-

They sort of have this addressed with City/Combo/Atlantic tickets, since they have to be used on the same day. But with other tickets, someone can still get a free ride(s) if their ticket isn’t punched. Previously, it wasn’t a major concern because most riders during the Rush were monthly pass holders, but now with remote working the monthly pass riders have dropped.

There was a concert at the UBS Arena yesterday. After it was over, the Q2 and Q110 buses were entirely full that other passengers that couldn't squeeze into the bus had to wait for the next one that's over 20 minutes. Or, go for the long walk to Elmont-LIRR station since Belmont Park isn't open to the public anymore.

    What about the N6?

I rode LIRR for the first time yesterday, does no one else find it odd how all the doors open at Hillside? What if a tourist gets lost and gets off the platform by accident?

Not really an issue. They definitely watch who gets off at the station, so a disembarking mistake would be swiftly addressed.

One of my coworkers today was telling me how shocked he was that the AriTrain doesn't accept OMNY or any contactless credit cards, and the lines for the MVMs were so long that the staff just opened the gates for everyone to prevent overcrowding. It seems like it should be relatively simple to apply the Cubic readers to the AirTrain gates, but this is the MTA we are talking about...

The Port Authority runs the JFK Air Train, they are also contracted with Cubic to have their own OMNY-like fare payment system. So, they will probably have one system for PATH and JFK Airtrain, possibly the Newark Airport Airtrain as well, once the PATH is extended there, at which point they may also accept actual OMNY fare cards for convenience.

From a basic perspective, if the new PANYNJ system takes contactless bank cards, then there appears to be no reason to integrate with OMNY and pay the MTA any fees for the privilege. Unless, they work together to come up with new joint-fare options/discounts.

One even told me his passengers told him to let someone on without a fare, and not even 3 minutes later he broke a window, ran off the bus and the bus went OOS.

I wonder how the passengers felt about that situation.

Especially on local lines, and if you drive the same run everyday.

Do you find that they start to recognize operators and just stop asking?

Improving and speeding up the Q70 bus and creating an all-electric shuttle service would cost a fraction of that amount, only about $500 million, said Ms. Sadik-Khan, former New York City transportation commissioner. She said the bus service would carry nearly twice as many passengers annually as the Willets Point AirTrain was projected to handle."

Sounds like they want a Q70 equivalent to the (N)(W) that uses the GCP?

And I hate that. Just walk on so we can keep it going.

The people who walk on, sit down to "find their card", come back and dip a card with 0.75 on it ... wasting time and risking an incident

What will be the excuse once MetroCards are decommissioned?

What sucks about Queens Blvd being down is that you have a large swath of Queens which genuinely become stranded; there aren't a ton of other subway alternatives, and generally speaking the bus networks in Forest Hills/Kew Gardens area aren't great at getting you to the (7) or (J)(Z) on a large scale.

This is something they’re trying to address in the Bus redesigns, however people are complaining about that because they can’t see the big picture.
