  1. I'm still kinda disappointed that they went mostly 4-car sets, too. These things are going to be so inflexible with most of the B-Division, and it's going to keep the (C) train short-length for the next 40 years. Suppose they want to extend the (C), or reroute it... Train length would definitely become an issue. Although, I did kind of relax a little when I thought about the (C) being a helper line, and has only a few solo stops. That calmed me a little. It's only good for now, though, and not for change.

  2. Roll Over My Head has already stated that he downvotes any comment that is about something he doesn't like, even if it's actual news. He downvoted my original announcement about the R160's coming to the (C) too, and now EVERYBODY is talking about them. Seesh......

And no, no more R46's on the (C) . No more relays at Chambers for the (J) . And YES, the (6) is still getting the R62A's. And nobody cares how many times you rode the R160 (C) today. They'll be here for the rest of the summer, relax. And now cue someone to tell me that I need to go on vacation again even though I only speak the facts.

So where will they relay after terminating at Chambers?

  3. I'm not getting any of this talk I'm reading. The (C) line uses 18 trains. If it gets 260 R179's, isn't 40 spare cars (four trains) adequate enough? (I'm talking full length trains.) That leaves 40 cars for the Eastern Division. Isn't 5 trains enough to replace the remaining R42's? (That's 480' trains) It's like I'm the only one that doesn't like the (C) being this unnecessarily short, oddball line that's 480' long. This is an opportunity for the TA to make the (C) full length. I'm pretty sure riders are happy that it's full length right now, because of the summer swap. They're probably wondering why it isn't like that all year-round. The (J)(L)(M)(Z) have to be shorter because of platform limitations. If the (MTA) orders new cars especially short for this one line, the (C) is going to be an oddball line for the next 40 years. Plus, there'll be little to no flexibility with these oddball cars. You certainly won't see them on the (A). I imagine people would be highly upset if they had to start running for the (A), too. They'd say, "Wow, we finally got new cars on the (C), but now the (A) is shorter. What gives?" To me, this is a simple issue. Why all this car swap discussion?

  4. 50 5 set cars is 250 cars which is 25 trains. 25 trains that would presumably go on the A, C (as 10 cars) or 2nd Av. line. I think most if not all of these will go on the A line. 10 4 car sets is 40 which sound like they'll go to replace the R42, there's about 40 of those in service and those may go to the Eastern division. That makes 290 cars, 25 5 car train sets for 10 car trains and 5 4 car train sets for 8 car train sets that run on lines like the L and Z. This still has the order coming out mostly for the A line as I see it, the A is a 10 car 60 foot line. The remaining 10 were test cars that will go on a line like the A or 2nd Av I guess.

"Both got some welcome news when the MTA and Bombardier Transportation inked the contract to manufacture 300 new R179 subways cars at Bombardier’s Plattsburgh facility. The order specifies10 prototypes for testing and approval, followed by 50 five-car sets and 10 four-car sets, with revenue service expected around late 2016. "

    Thank you, sir.

  5. I am not going to do any more idea things, but to increase construction speeds I often suggest the order of a second TBM. Why isn't that done?

Interestingly enough, the tunnel boring is the fastest part of the whole project. I thought it would be the longest. But all the excavating and moving of utilities are the thing that's taking the longest time. This is why I'd like to see the (MTA) work on projects that are easier, such as rebuilding of abandoned RoWs. The infrastructure is there, all that needs to be done is a little planning and renovation. Then move on to the brand new stuff. Although, some parts of SAS are already built so, in a way, they're already doing that. :D

  6. Does anyone think that the SAS, in current form, is slightly redundant? People on the Upper East Side don't even like to take the subway. I don't see how it will possibly be useful in its current form without some connection to The Bronx.

People further east than Second Avenue won't have to walk those long blocks to Lexington Avenue. I use to go to school on the UES. I had to walk from Lex. to Second Ave. every morning. If there was a fully operational SAS back then, I wouldn't have used the Lexington Avenue line.

  7. Sadly so. It would've been nice to see the MTA learn from that mistake since the R143s are isolated, but I could never understand how the R160B (which was built by Kawasaki) can't run with it's predecessor R143. Looks like those Canarsie yard cars will be donors unless they were 'converted' the way the R142As are into R188s.

What is 8277 doing right now anyway?

  8. Must have missed the above posts, or just did not bother to read them. There also happen to be 50 R42s that need replacing at ENY (refer to my above post).

On a side note, I am speculating that the only reason they would reduce the number of cars to be assigned to the (C) is because of the increased reliability of the new cars, thus justifying a reduction in the spare factor.

Yeah, the remaining 40 in fours (5 trains). Also, one less train for the Eastern Division. There are currently 6 (48 cars) R42 trains.

  9. With 222 R32 cars available for (C) service, that's 27 trains (480') at most. If 260 of the R179's are arranged in fives (26 trains), that's a loss of only one train. The (C) runs about 18 trains, at most, at any given time. Why would most of this order be arranged in fours?

  10. The MTA just said that they're learning from FASTRACK, so instead of shutting down a section of track every weekend for many weekends, they'll close an area for about a week straight. Honestly, this (E) and (F) thing is greater--so to speak--than Fastrack because this section of track is shut down at all times, not just nights.
