  1. I don't think the MTA would be so shortsighted as to order mostly 4-car sets that can only be used on one line. They'd wind up with a lot of Eastern Division extras. Plus, they would be a hassle in swapping with the (A) (or any other 600' line for that matter), if need be. I think the reason they ordered the amount they did is that they're going to keep the R32's until R211 time (2015-18). I figure they learned from the mass overscraping they just executed on the older cars. Once the 179's roll in they'll be able to put together 10-car sets of 32's; having enough spares to do so. I'll speculate and say that the 179's will go to Jamaica to make it all NTT, which will push the 46's to 207th. I figure the (C) will be R32/46 full length come 2015.

  2. Until I officially hear otherwise, I'll just assume: (26) 5-car sets and (5) 4-car sets. Replacing the (C) with 8-car R179's would be so unflexible. Those cars wouldn't be able to run anywhere else outside of the Eastern Division. That doesn't even make sense.

  3. Although even if they retired all the R42s, ENY would be short some trains. The (M) probably would've had to use the 10-car R160s and short turn them at 2nd av.

You should know this by now, R44s were retired early thus R32s are still around. That plus with the 'car shortage', the (C) isn't likely to run more than 8 60' car trains.

I hear that R32 (and 42) part, but the thing that gets me is we should be getting new cars by now. The oldest R44's hit 40 last year. They're now 39-41 years old.

  4. Even if they were you would still have old cars on the (A)/©. The R44s when they retired were already 39 years old. Had the R32s and R42s been retired the R44s would be in service until 2017 or even longer looking at the situation of the R179s. So it really doesn't matter what circumstances took place you would still have old trains on those two lines regardless.

I don't have problem with old cars, I just have a problem with really old cars that are still in the system, years past their 40-year life span. They're way out-dated; brand new full-length NTT's are in order.

  5. So:

There are R188C cars as the locos?

R142B/R188B Cars as the passenger cars?

R188/R142 Cars as the conductor's cars?

    How do they do it?

I think it's 2 a-cars as the cab cars, 3 b-cars in between those, and 1 c-car in between all that somewhere. A-C-B-B-B-A, perhaps...

  6. yep, pretty much like what they use on WMATA stock down in DC.

I am so not understanding that picture. What's going on there? It's like the T/O's cab is by a door. ...OK, I think I'm seeing it right, now.

  7. Putting R62As on a Lexington Avenue line is not a stupid decision, as long as that line is not the (5). That's because the (5) shares a significant amount of track and southern terminal with the (2) and often both lines use each other's trains. And that's why it would be a stupid decision to put R62As on the (2). Only if R62As are assigned to both the (2) and (5) would it not be such a stupid decision. Except that there aren't enough R62As currently based in Corona to fully equip both lines, so that's just not happening.

Meanwhile, the MTA is sending R142As to Kawasaki to be equipped with CBTC technology. Most of those cars are based out of Westchester Yard, home of the (6) train, a line that's not getting CBTC any time soon. By having the (6) and (7) swap fleets, it's an almost even swap. And the (6) can use the same LED circle/diamond markers currently used on the (7)/<7> because it also has a similar (6) local/<6> express setup. Makes perfect sense to me.

Me too. I don't know why this has been discussed for so long. Those LED's would be perfect for the (6).

  8. In the long run though, isn't the initial cost of FIND more worth it? The R188s will run in 5 and 6-car sets, so those 5-car sets could be rerouted onto the 7th or Lexington Avenue Lines for some reason (can't think of one in particular, but it can happen). Also, for <7> services, it's easier to see only the express stops rather than the entire line and only a faint dot for express stops. Finally, FIND is easier to update in case of transfer changes such as the inclusion of new bus routes or if other subway lines change routings (the replacement of the V by the M is a good example). To me it seems that the flexibility of FIND warrants the upfront cost of the system.

The (7) cannot be rerouted on to another line, it's independent of every other IRT line.

  9. Actually the first to post revenue photos which are sweet!

However RR Net already had the M8 schedule the day before it started service, which i was the first to post this on youtube lol..

As for riding ill wait, just gonna let everyone get there shine, since i dont want to bump into tooo many people...

On the other hand gotta catch the SEPTA newest Silverliner 5s which also the newest fleets in the NE.

If u mean crossing between cab where the engineers are not at then it ill most likely be open since the M7s has theres open, plus the cabs should be closed halfway regardless of crossing

The only cab that will be locked is the back and the front cabs. The ones in the middle of the train are locked in the SIGNLE cab position that allows passengers to walk through withought seeing the actual controls, just like the way M7s are.

I think Homeball answered my question. I was referring to that left side window in the cab; where there are no controls.

  10. M8 has to operate with full cab at engineers end. FRA regulation do to firemans side window type, no passengers up front.

OK, but what about the area where the cab is open for people to walk through the cars? Are those windows locked?

  11. Indeed. Although I still think the front of the M8's could have been better (although I'm actually starting to like it now), the reliabilty is waaaaay better at Kawasaki (and Bombardier with the M7's too).

I'm starting to like the face, too.

I think the Engineers will prefer to use the full cab not half ;)! Why would one bother being squeezed inside a half one anyways lol

Shoot, ain't it more like a third (1/3) cab.
