  1. @ Bree... - Since it is early, look around at the various prices. Like I said, I borrowed the book from Queens Library, used it and gave it back. Try to find the best price. Perhaps a used book will be a little cheaper.

@KingNas - I am not 100% sure about probation. My educated guess is 'yes' since it is a different agency. Even if you have to do it - a year flies by fast.

  2. and what do you say about calling the civil service bookstore with their books or this one?

     http://www.amazon.com/Bus-Operator-Arco-Master-Conductor/dp/B0091XBAJ2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1374350393&sr=8-2&keywords=bus+operator

I briefly looked into this one, and one of the things I did not like was that it was not 100% specific for Bus Operators since the fourth and fifth sample exams were for Bus Operator OR Conductor. From what I recall, the questions in the sample exams were nothing like exam # 2613 which was given back in January.

  3. what do you know about this book for those who have taken the B/O exam would you recommend it or do you frown upon it?

    http://www.amazon.com/Operator-Passbooks-Career-Examination-Series/dp/0837301025/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374343543&sr=8-1&keywords=bus+operator

Would highly NOT recommend it. The questions in that book are so old, they are nothing like the B/O exam I took this past January nor the BOSS exam I took in late June...

In addition, keep in mind the phrase "What you pay for is what you get", right?

  4. young do you have any suggestion on where to obtain study material to prepare for the civil service exam?

    Yes I do.

After looking at several books in the past, to prepare for exam 2613, which I took in January, I would suggest "Bus Operator Exam", produced by Learning Press, copyright 1997. The ISBN number is 9781576850466. What I personally did was I borrowed this book from Queens Library, made index cards with all of the questions and then I returned the book for the next available patron. From looking online, I know the book can be a little high as far as the price, however, in my opinion, it is definitely worth it!!

  5. I want to take this.

What does it mean when you guys say a civil service exam? Is it any different from the BOSS ?

According to http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcas/html/work/civilservice_1.shtml, a civil service exam is "is in place to help ensure that the hiring process is competitive and fair." (Refer to the site for more information, which is self-explanatory.) In other words, the civil service exam asks you questions about the job.

A BOSS (also known as a Bus Operator Selection Survey) is a mini-psychological exam, which selects Bus Operators based on your answers. They will have several statements in which you agree, disagree, or just neutral.

Below are some examples. The answers that the MTA are looking for, which will help you get hired, are in parenthesis. If you answer anything else, they may not look to hire you.

    1) How comfortable are you speaking one-on-one to a stranger? (Comfortable)

    2) Laws which prohibit radar detectors are unfair. (Disagree) [since you want to tell the MTA that you never speed]

    3) In your opinion, how often is it acceptable to be a minute or two late for work? (Never)

    4) How would you rate your ability to get along with others? (Very high)

    5) I am often in a hurry. (Disagree) [keep in mind that the bus is on a timetable]

    6) In the past year, how often have you been absent from work? (Less than 5 days) [Need to be reasonable]

    7) How comfortable are you speaking one-on-one with your supervisor? (Comfortable) [since you do not make any mistakes]

    8) The charge of a ticket is too high. (Disagree) [want to tell the MTA that you are a good driver & do NOT speed)

    9) I get upset when people do not turn on red when it is legal to do so. (Neutral) [Again, the bus has a timetable]

    10) The kind of supervision I like best is: (Fairly close supervision) [Again, you do not make any mistakes]

    11) In a one year period, how many absences from work would you consider acceptable? (Less than 5 days) [Repeat of #6]

Get it? Feel free to PM me if necessary...

  6. Took this test yesterday. Anyone know how long before the test results are posted and where?

    Thanks.

On the "Candidate Record of Answers" is when the proposed answer key will be online. This will be helpful in a way because then, you can compare your answers with the solutions.

As far as the official results are concerned, that can easily take 6 months. This includes the list being generated as well.

  7. Hey guys. I need some information. Is tomorrow's exam at Brooklyn Technical High School? Also, what time is it? I heard 9:01 and I heard 1:00. My situation is that I was supposed to take the exam on April 6th, but I arrived late due to circumstances out of my control. I was advised to fax them a formal request to be able to take the exam tomorrow, which I did, but they never got back to me. So, I'm going to take my chances with showing up and talking to them at the exam site.

Because of the huge number of people that applied and are taking this exam, they are offering it at 2 different times, 9 AM and also at 1 PM. IMHO, it is up to you as far as what time you show up - I personally don't think it matters what time.

  8. anyone else take the test today 3/23/13   i was surprised it was only 40 questions  and there were   alot of people taking the test today               any other thoughts   on your experience  ?

The reason why it was only 40 questions compared to 80 (like the bus operator) is because of the huge # of applicants taking the test (thanks to the economy), they had to do two sessions, 40 questions each. In my opinion, if NYC Transit did not have as many applicants, then they could have the normal three sessions that would have lasted 3 hours with the normal 80 questions...

I will be very curious when this list comes out during the summer how many people total are taking this exam between yesterday, April 6th and April 20th...

  9. I have a question regarding the calculator. Do they really exam the calculator, mine is a simple calculator that I bout at Home Depot but its meant for contractors. Do you think they will give me a problem? I am just use to it.

When I took the Bus Operator exam back in January they did! Like someone said to me, just buy a very simple calculator at the 99 cents store. One that can just add, subtract, multiply and divide. Nothing else.

  10. i was thinking about taking the test prep class on 3/23. did anybody take any of the previous classes? if so how were they and did you feel they were nesscary?

Well first of all, the guys who teach the class are Bus Operators, not track workers. Second, I took not only the previous class for Track Worker, but I also took a similar class for Bus Operator and took the Bus Operator exam 2 weeks later. In my opinion, if not all, most of the questions are common sense. I honestly do not feel that the class was necessary. Again, they are Bus Operators, not track workers.

  11. Good night to all.

I have a question about trackwork or

exam 3600. I got my letter in the mail today and it says that my test is

on April 6 down in Brooklyn and the test is only an hour and a half

long does anybody else have the same thing.

I thought the test was like, at least three hours long.

I got the same thing too for March 23rd - an hour and a half...we'll just have to be patient to see whether they are going to ask 40 or 80 questions...

  12. Is this a two day exam?

I lost my original paper and I could have sworn it said it was a two day exam on the 23rd & 24th.

New paper says just the 23rd, was the two dates o nthe first paper just a place holder?

    Thanks.

Yes they were a place holder. The exam is a one-day test, not two.

  13. Capital is large scale jobs. Digouts, chip outs, panel jobs etc...mid week days off. Long hours on the weekends 16+ hour shifts. You move around a lot. One week in Queens the next in the Bronx etc...The only reason to pick Capital is to work the overtime. Lots of OT readily available and you're expected to work it. You will make six figures easy if you want it(once at top pay). Maintainence you have partial weekends off eg: Fri/Sat, Sat/Sun, Sun/Mon. The work is much smaller scale (excluding that fast track crap. Maintainence days doesn't have that). There is some OT but nothing like Capital.

So for the FASTRACK projects, who works those? Capital? Maintenance?

Also, for the Capital, if you work 16+ hour shifts, how many days do you work? Example, a normal full-time employee (TA or not) works 8 hours per day  Monday to Friday for a total of 40 hours.

If you can elaborate more I would appreciate it a lot.

  14. Are Trackworkers assigned a division when hired or they can work both?

My educated guess is that they can do both, depending upon the needs of the agency.

Example: With the FASTRACK program going on, Track Workers successfully worked on the IRT Nostrand Avenue Line (aka the (2) in Brooklyn). The following week, I would not be surprised if not all, but most of those Track Workers also worked on the Broadway (N)(Q)(R) lines in Manhattan.

Looking ahead, I would not be surprised if the crew who works on the (E)(F)(M)(R) lines from March 18th to March 22nd would also be working on the IRT (4)(5) & (6) lines the following week North of 42nd Street - Grand Central Terminal.

  15. can someone please tell me where I can get the study guide for the track worker exam 3600? .my usual book store closed and i'm stumped on how to study for this exam..thanks for your time

Taking the class would be your best bet...like someone else said, there is no 'study guide' for this exam...
