  1. Hmm, the Arnines supposed to leave C.I. by Brighton line. The issue is that there is Manhattan bound track rehabilitation by Dekalb Av, which causes all other (Q) trains to go via tunnel. For the R9 this isn't working out because it has to get to 207 yard somehow. So what is the different route that it will use?

Just got the info, it will go via Sea Beach.

  3. I can get a used one for around $300. Are used ones worth it? Thanks!

I looked at this one. Looks good. Thanks!

This one is $200 dollars off!! With lens.

Well I have the d5100 and I love it. It is too my first dSLR so I was "in your shoes" not a month ago. But because my budget was different I got the body and more expensive lens separate. The reason why I got this camera, and not the other ones, is the good high ISO performance, which is good for underground/night shots. Still I recommend you to go to the store and test some of the cameras in your budget range. The reason behind this is that different bodies have different ergonomics, this is where it gets personal. For example, some people claim that they can not stand poor ergonomics of low-end nikons, but for me they are beyond adequate, etc. So tell us what you decide to get.

  4. Well I say either keep them closed until the train is ready to pull out or keep them fully open. It is esp. annoying at 57th street on the (Q) line. I got caught up with that crap a few weeks ago, but today I saw which train pulled in first so I knew which one was taking off next. They need to put up next train signs at that station on the platforms already. I see way too many people running back and forth trying to figure out which train is taking off first. One train has one door open while the other train not taking off first has both doors open, so naturally everyone goes running across the platform thinking that the train with both doors open is taking off first only to find that it isn't. May not sound like a big deal but that stupid one door open thing can cost you 20 minutes easily waiting for a train to pull out.

Thus the problem is not whether the doors should be kept open or not, it is problem of 57th St, and the problem is that there is no signals to indicate next leaving train. I also wouldn't count too much on "first to pull in first to leave" I got burned like that couple of times. Keeping doors closed would also create a lot of confusion, as people got used to the current set up would again be confused, and also creates additional crowding on the platform. Because not every T/O, C/R checks cars for passengers, some might wake up in closed cars.

Easiest way out of this problem is to have "next train" indicators in turnstile area and on platforms as well.

  5. What is up with the trains having just one door open in each car when the train is at the first stop?? So stupid!! I don't know what exactly it is supposed to accomplish other than making passengers have to walk further to get on the train. I realize that it has been a practice for years but it is one that doesn't make much sense IMO. <_<

It makes sense when the temperatures are at or near extremes, the doors are closed to keep the temperature at level. The last thing i would want is to have 90F on both inside and outside the car, having only one door open significantly reduces the heat loss, which in turn can lead to energy savings due to decrease in electricity use by AC/Heating units. Other factors maybe at play as well. Just my thoughts

  6. Which is why I still hope that when they have to re-rennovate the entire line again, they extend the platforms to handle a 300' train. I don't see it being smart to have 3 3-car sets around as if you need to 'borrow it' it can't run on anything except maybe the (C).

Another bad outcome, is that ABA creates a deficiency in motor cars, while leaving extra "trailer" cars idle. Probably the TA will leave 68s on that shuttle until there are no more spare parts, which may last for couple decades. :D

Is there a reason why the G doesn't terminate at 71st-Continental Avenue anymore?

    Financial cutbacks of 2010

  7. I wonder what will happen to the Franklin Av Shuttle once all 75 footers are retired. Will the sets be shortened to 120' AA or will they be lengthened to 180' ABA? The platforms look like they can handle 180' or at least be extended to accommodate increased length of the train.

  8. I would prefer nightly shutdowns over weekend and day/night work anytime.

Unfortunately since large percent of our network is NOT underground, some of the work has to be done during day time, rendering nightly shutdown of el, embankment and open cuts useless. Thus system wide overnight shutdowns are unfeasible and that is why there will always be(hope i'm wrong) at least spotty weekend work throughout the whole city.

Love how they painted Grand St. ceiling normal white instead of that dirty/creamy white they used to have. Also why don't paint the whole ceiling white, instead painting area above track with black. IMO it would look much better if whole ceiling was white, the station can always use a bit more light.

  9. Stumbled upon this while checking out future G.Os.

    (Q) Coney Island-bound trains skip Avenue U and Neck Rd

    Weekend, 4 AM Sat to 10 PM Sun, Mar 17 - 18

For service to these stations, take the to Sheepshead Bay and transfer to a Manhattan-bound .

For service from these stations, take the to Kings Hwy and transfer to a Coney Island-bound .

Note: This service change is scheduled to operate until Nov 16.

Is it an error, or there is actually something going on that will take half a year in weekends?

  10. Judging by the range of explanations for the issue at Prospect Park (at various times, the reason was a signal problem, a stalled train in BIE, a rail condition, and a general mechanical problem), I'm assuming that a signal went up under a train.

What is odd is that the announcements at about 5:00 PM at Atlantic Av (even on the (N) platform) blamed a stalled Manhattan-bound (Q) train at Prospect Park. The odd thing is that that was at 7 in the morning.

That is exactly what happened there. I was aboard Astoria bound (Q) when we went into emergency, it happened right after we left the station. We stopped abruptly and alarm rang. On the radio I heard that it happened multiple times before us. My guess would be that they can't permanently resolve the problem.

  11. I think the R62a should stay on the (7) line for 30 or 40 more years:). it's a really good subway train and it's safe enough to ride. the (MTA) should really stop ordering newer cars (it's a waste of money). remember how the (MTA) ordered alot of R160's, well (MTA) was losing money so bad, that they lost the (V) and (W) and had to force the employees to stop working for a long while in order to save money. so let the subway run and if it retire's, they should rebuilt it.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

The sole reason why Flushing gets NTTs is that those are the only trains compatible with CBTC. The service cuts weren't caused by order of new B division cars, rather they were caused by results of economical recession in the country few years back.

  12. There's less traffic at night, so shuttle buses would be quicker and less of a slowdown. Also, I don't see why elevated should make a difference.

Well correct me if I'm wrong, but there are no lighting system of any kind on the El lines, thus how the work is going to be done, if the workers wont be able to see? Additionaly I can't get anything from top of my head when major non emergency work like replacement of tracks was done during night hours on the elevated line.

  13. The Brooklyn portion, and there would be shuttle buses. (they have never cared about replacing the service anyway, jut like on the (L) now. And if it gets all the work out of the way, it would be better in the long run).

If you mean to run Fastrack at night for 4 nights, I don't think it is going to work out as great as it does in Manhattan simply because it's an elevated line. Unless it is an emergency, I don't believe the residents would be thrilled to have such inconvenience during the nighttime.

  14. So you are suggesting a mix of cut and cover and TBM work right?

Precisely, there should be a balance between each one, I believe currently it is that way: The tunnels are bored and the stations are built with cut and cover.

    I have a question,

    detail4763.png

Is anything done in anticipation of the cyan line at a junction where (Q) and (T) supposedly separate? Or its only been tunneled to connect to 63rd Street without further work done?
