  1. Responding to the above, the only tunnels that currently have room for an additional service are Rutgers (F), 63rd Street (F), Montague (R) and 149th Street (2). Nothing else can get to Rutgers due to the (M) using the extra local capacity. Wasn't there a proposal to build a tunnel connecting the Brighton Line near Prospect Park to the Culver under 9th Street at one point to utilize this capacity?

63rd Street would never be fully utilized unless a service comes off of Second Avenue (connection tracks to/from the south are part of Phase 3 for yard moves) and the super-express or another line on the Queens side is built. Montague was better-utilized in the past but stopped due to the (brownM)(V) merger and low ridership.

  2. Unless I'm mistaken, isn't it available at nycsubway.org?

    Pretty sure it is.

I was at the Oculus earlier today and agree that it's quite nice (well, except for the damn tourists standing in the middle of the stairs/walkways to take pictures). Certainly will be nice when Cortlandt (1) is back open.

  3. I see the shuttle has borrowed a few "watch the gap" stickers from Metro North.

Sent from my iPod touch using NYC Transit Forums mobile app

Until the Times Square rehabilitation (and platform extension) is completed you'll see the R62As ply the line. Afterwards I wouldn't be surprised if the single units get permanently linked into five car sets and get sent to the (6) in exchange for one or two R142As which can just run as five car sets.

Not that this is an issue at this time, but do the R142/As even have a program for the shuttle?

What will be the service changes if the North Side or South Side of the Manhattan Bridge closes again?

Don't mention the war. I hope it doesn't happen for a VERY long time, but probably similar to what we have seen in the past. The (Q) would likely run via 6th Avenue between DeKalb and Lex/63rd if the south side was closed, for example. Based on track layouts, a north side closure would be more disruptive, as every South Brooklyn service other than the (F) would have to run via Broadway or Nassau Street.

  4. Eventually in the future you may see the BMT and IND frequencies combined into one.

And that would likely be to eliminate the need for a bunch of services to change frequency.

As of now, the following services change frequency at some point along their route:

    (B)(D)(F)(M)(R)

When SAS opens, the (Q) will flip to the IND frequency just south of Lex/63rd.

Here's a listing of what'll be on each frequency for the entire route when SAS opens:

    IND: (A)(C)(E)(G)(H)

    BMT: (J)(L)(N)(Z)(7) Franklin (S)

    IRT: (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6) Times Square (S)

With SAS, 6/17 of the B Division lines will need to change frequency, which the MTA may desire to avoid, but we're getting ahead of ourselves there.

For the uninitiated, the (7) is lumped with the B Division because that is its only track connection with the rest of the system. All car moves to the rest of the IRT have to either hop on the Bay Ridge branch with a diesel and use the unpowered connection at Linden Shops or get over to the IND and cross over to the IRT at 207th St or Concourse.

  5. New York's system is so large that having the radio would likely get clogged up if everything was on the same band. The BMT/IND/IRT division makes for an easy way to assign segments of the system. Of course, the (7) is on the BMT band, as are the (B)(D)(M) in Brooklyn and (F) south of Church, while the (R) is on the IND in Queens.

  6. I just want to point out that there is a lot of misinformation and incorrect statements in the last 5 pages or so of this thread..

    Just wait and see.

Precisely. We'll see everything when it happens. Knowing how things have been working over at Bombardier lately with their Toronto orders, that might be a while, but we won't know anything until the trains have arrived in New York.

With all of the nonsense here, I don't remember if somebody has already answered what I am about to ask: Has the test train (supposedly due for delivery this month) arrived yet?

  7. We still have 3 years until the (L) shutdown. As we saw with the R44s, anything can happen by then. We know that the (G) will be getting 600' trains, the (L) will be suspended west of Bedford, the (J)(M)(Z) will see additional service, the (J)(Z) will run local and 2 out of system transfers are being added. Anything else is pure speculation.

  8. Wouldn't be the first time. Off the top of my head, R62, R62A and R68s also wouldn't make an even amount of trains, and I'm sure there are more.

All of those came in as singles. Odd number of cars was so they could swap a car out if it went bad. Of course, that is all moot now that most of them are linked in 4-5 car sets.

Another week and another delay..... This time no one seems to be talking..... Something is NOT good on the horizon.... I have a strong feeling this train is somehow going to fail on burn-in testing..... When everyone plays quiet on me it's always an indicator that the s#^+ is about to hit the fan and someone doesn't want me running my mouth. On top of that, the MTA was scheduled to begin qualification testing a week ago.....

Just a heads up to everyone... This may get worse before it gets better.... If there is no train on property within the next 14 days, there is a bigger issue that Bombardier is trying to keep quiet about. I said from day 1 when I created this thread years ago that the order should go to Kawasaki.... Not because I was a fan of there trains, but I read the documents for the technical evaluation and felt it spelled disaster.

What a surprise...not. Bombardier hasn't been having good luck lately. They have had major issues with defects and late deliveries. I have been in Toronto a few times in the past couple years and their Bombardier orders for subway and streetcars have been far behind.

  9. There's no need to send all (A) trains to/from Far Rock or Rock Park because all stations in the peninsula are the lowest used in the entire system, especially the Rock Park branch. Obviously, Far Rock is the busiest out of all stations in the peninsula, but that doesn't mean sending all (A) trains to/from there will solve anything, especially if one of the drawbridges crap out. 15-20 minute frequencies is fine enough as it is. Please remember, ridership in the peninsula is extremely low because the demand for transit in the area is extremely low. Rerouting all Lefferts (A) trains to/from Howard Beach is cheaper, as Aqueduct and JFK Airport need regular service much like 104, 111, and Lefferts do. Plus, it would eliminate the constant confusion, where some JFK goers end up on the Lefferts-bound train instead of the Far Rock/Rock Park-bound train.

Also, the R46 LCD side signs should always display "TO HOWARD BEACH", "TO FAR ROCKAWAY", or "TO ROCKAWAY PARK", then "VIA JFK AIRPORT", so that way riders would know, understand, and pay attention properly. And that will be perfectly fine. Also, keep the scheduled rush hour Rock Park (A) trains and the 24/7 Rock Rock shuttle.

There's nothing wrong with sending the (C) to/from Lefferts (as well as making it the Lefferts shuttle overnight too). The issue (from what I've been hearing) has to do with pathetic politics.

So? I myself don't give a ratass because 104, 111 and Lefferts can have regular 10 minute frequencies everyday instead of the current 15-20 minute frequencies. If their asses can't handle the local, let them get off at Euclid for the express. Plain and simple. Case closed.

I used to be against this proposal, but now I'm fine with that, especially because of all the things that Snowblock said months back. It's just 3 simple stops. Get over it and move on. Who cares?

    Exactly.

Completely agree. I've been to the Rockaways on weekdays during rush hour and trains are practically empty, even with the low service frequencies. Biggest issue with the current arrangement is the need for airport service. While most people take the (E) or LIRR, that is where the (A) fills up. It wouldn't be hard to have every other train relay on the express tracks just south of there to give it more service while not overserving the Rockaways.

  10. Track fire at West 4th St on the downtown 8th av tracks. Uptown tracks are unusable because of the fire. Signal problems at 42 St-Bryant Park delaying northbound local trains. Plus sick passenger at 59th St on the downtown express tracks. It's rush hour btw.

EDIT: Downtown switches south of W4 can't be used.. Uptown switches can be used.

    Reroute, (A)(B)(C)(D)(E)(F)(M)

    Okay, let's see:

    (A) Switches to local track north of 59th heading downtown, then runs via the (D)(F) to Jay St via Rutgers, switching to local north of 34th. Uptown runs via Cranberry, using the (D) north of W4 but running local on 6th Avenue south of 34th

    (B) Suspended to avoid having 5 services use one track north of 34th

    (C) Same as (A)

    (D) Switches to local track just north of 59th heading downtown

    (E) Suspended south of 34th Street, terminates on express tracks

    (F) Switches to express track north of 34th heading uptown

    (M) Runs to Chambers

  11. A earthquake has collapsed all of the tunnels connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan and there is no talk of them being rebuilt again.

    Reroute!

EDIT: The Montague Street tunnel is NOT affected.

How is Montague not affected when it's practically next to another tunnel?

    (2) suspended south of Wall St

    (3) suspended north of Clark St.

    (4) suspended south of Bowling Green

    (5) suspended north of Borough Hall, runs local in Brooklyn (except Hoyt St)

    (S) runs between E180 St and Dyre

    (9) makes a comeback to replace the (3), running between Times Square and Lenox.

    (A) Suspended south of Fulton Street, runs local outside of rush hours

    (C) Suspended north of High Street, extended to Lefferts

    (F) Suspended south of East Broadway

    (G) Extended to Stillwell

    (H) Makes a comeback, runs express between East Broadway and Far Rockaway

    (L) Suspended west of Bedford Ave

    (R) Suspended south of Whitehall Street

    (W) makes a comeback, runs between 95 Street and Court St

  12. I'm trying to figure out how a building collapse affects the (F)(N)(Q), which are half a mile away. Heck, when WTC was attacked they had service running a couple short blocks away a couple days later. Same for the Barclays Center, which has stuff open 3 short blocks south but closed a mile north and west.

  13. Anyway:

A fire starts at 14 Street Union Square and the smoke blocks firefighters from entering the station. The smoke has seeped through the following:

From 14 St to Times Square on the (1)(2)(3)

From 14 Street to 1 Ave on the (L)

    Reroute!

Spock wouldn't be happy with the lack of logic here.

    (1) suspended south of 96th Street, express NB south of 137th Street

    (2) suspended between 96th Street and Chambers Street

    (3) suspended

    (4) suspended Grand Central-Brooklyn Bridge, local in Brooklyn and extended to New Lots

    (5) suspended south of E180 St

    (6) suspended south of Grand Central

    (B) runs local in Brooklyn to Brighton Beach

    (L) suspended west of Bedford

    (N) suspended between 34 Street and Canal St, via tunnel

    (R) runs on (F) between 36th and Bway-Lafayette, then over the bridge to DeKalb

    (Q) suspended

  14. Next…

A smoke condition at Queens Plaza station is impairing visibility within the station. The station has been evacuated and the fire department is on the case. Trains cannot pass through Queens Plaza.

    Affected: (E)(M)(R)

    (R) runs via 63rd Street and is extended to Jamaica Center to replace the (E)

    (M) to Chambers, avoiding the IND entirely

    (E) suspended between Court Square and Roosevelt Ave, use (7) to connect

    (F) runs local on Queens Boulevard to allow (E) to relay and make up for lost (M) service

I thought about sending the (E) via 63rd Street, but that would cause excess congestion and possibly back up 3 Manhattan trunk lines.

  15. So the T/O was knocked out, nobody noticed that he was driving or even didn't work for the (MTA), and yet he was able to drive a Train throughout the entire city. How the heck did he even get into the cab??

Going back a couple of posts when the same question was answered,

No, that guy impersonated a real T/O, got into 207 and ran an R44 round trip from 207 to Lefferts but on his way back, he was tripped up by a timer and that's how he was caught.
