MTR Admiralty Posted May 31, 2010 Share #26 Posted May 31, 2010 Funny; we once had one of those here. A test from the Curitibia system, with the stop by City Hall, and running on a special shuttle in the nearby area. this in the early 90's. Interesting, but regardless, these might have to take up considerable street space for implementation. And there's also the cost for implementation and maintenance. Grand Concourse Posted May 31, 2010 Share #27 Posted May 31, 2010 Having bus collection systems by all doors on the bus beats the purpose of having SBS altogether. I mean, we want off-board payment to speed up the bus service. That was one of the integral features of this set up in the first place. True, but at least they paid in view of the camera. Compare that to how it's set up now where you need undercover inspectors to check the receipts to make sure people actually paid [and not to mention the waste of paper]. The only reason I support SBS is that it allows people to enter via all doors compared to how people still has to exit via the front door holding up the bus while the back door is still open and a fare beater will cut in to get a free ride. The faults with this kind of set up include: -possible queueing: people who do not have enough money on their cards can back up everyone else, especially at major stops - this leads to dwell times -cameras: you first got to make sure they are working, and also, the B/O is then forced to monitor ALL three doors (talking about LFSAs here) to make sure everyone pays and finally enforcement - if the bus is crowded in the middle and someone gets on in the back without paying, how does the person get confronted? error46146 Posted May 31, 2010 Share #29 Posted May 31, 2010 How about we just make everybody's life easier and make the buses free? There no worries about fare. Problem Solved. Didn't bloomberg promise free buses at one point during his campaign?
Grand Concourse Posted May 31, 2010 Share #30 Posted May 31, 2010 Are you kidding? Not all buses mirrors subway lines and fuel is expensive. Do you want to pay $5 for a subway ride? And he was talking about the crosstown buses since chances are people ride them just to take another bus or subway line to go up or down Manhattan. Didn't bloomberg promise free buses at one point during his campaign? Bad idea. The LFSAs on the Bx12 already got beaten up. If you let the entire run go free, you can imagine what could happen. That means you have to pay more (potentially) for (additional) maintenance.
