MTA, NYPA roll out solar panels at Coney Island station to help reduce fossil fuel us

The sunny skies over Coney Island aren't just for sunbathing anymore - they're being used to clean the city's fleet of subway cars.

 

Solar panels recently placed on the roof of a NYC Transit maintenance barn heat the water workers use to scour sections of subway trains' stainless steel exteriors.

 

The heating system is the latest in a series of energy projects by the New York Power Authority, which annually saves the MTA an estimated $5.7 million and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by more than 34,000 tons, NYC Transit President Thomas Prendergast said.

 

"This solar roof is not going to obviate the need for a fare increase in the future, but many solar roofs, at many facilities, will keep the MTA's costs down," NYPA President Richard Kessel said at a roof-top press conference with Prendergast at the Coney Island Overhaul Shop and Maintenance Facility today.
