metsfan Posted April 4, 2008 Share #1 Posted April 4, 2008 I am utterly confused as to how amtrak adirondack service to montreal leaves manhattan. Is it via the west side, or east side, and if the west side, where do the tracks go from penn station? If someone could explain this it would really end a years long search for an answer. Thanks! - Andy
Ken S. Posted April 4, 2008 Share #2 Posted April 4, 2008 Train follows the Empire route up the West Side to MN's Hudson Line.
metsfan Posted April 4, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted April 4, 2008 FINALLY AN ANSWER! Thank you! I was hoping/wondering if amtrak or whoever else might put that old rail line on the west side into use, and it'd work for diesels, because it has many a vent all the way up along the river to where the tunnel ends... Perhaps metro-north service to penn station? Might buy time till SAS is complete... - Andy
Harry Posted April 4, 2008 Share #4 Posted April 4, 2008 Amtrak uses the Empire Connection (powered by cantenary and third rail) via the Empire Tunnel into Penn Station.
metsfan Posted April 4, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted April 4, 2008 AH HAH! So, my suspicions of those tracks on the other side of the hudson river tunnel tracks vs LIRR are indeed correct on how the adirondack get into penn station?? It would connect 3 facts, one, the time it takes, the clearing of that tunnel on the west side by amtrak some time ago (1983?), and, what appears to be catenary structure over the tracks just east of the javits center on google earth. On tuesday when i go to get some mets tickets with my lady i'll scope it out because i'm tall and can usually see over the concrete or steel walls they have in such situations, will bring back photos as well if i have time. - Andy

Now i HAVE to ride the adirondack, not an option, i gotta see this! - Andy

metsfan Posted April 4, 2008 Author Share #8 Posted April 4, 2008 I just realized that with the empire tunnel, amtrak could actually bypass penn station with a trans-hudson tunnel originating north of penn station... You could have service, with the lackawana cutoff restored and going into PA, from upstate NY into northeastern pennsylvania and northern new jersey which has no train service north of hacketstown aside from farther east near NY.... Far fetched, but plausible and practical if it was done right. - Andy
metsfan Posted April 5, 2008 Author Share #9 Posted April 5, 2008 You can also ride an Empire Service train out to PGH and take MNCR back to Manhattan. I am going to go to Croton-on-Hudson, NY (CRT) on amtrak's service, then return on metro north hudson line on april 23 to explore this mysterious empire tunnel in photos and video. I believe i am going to leave on the 2:20 PM train from NYP, and return on the 3:27 metro north train. Only $26.50!! not bad. If anyone wants to join me that'd be cool. My girlfriend will likely be with me, and maybe one of my brothers and maybe some friends from nyc. - Andy
