Icy MTA neglects elderly, disabled - cuts 850 workers, replaces them with uncertified drivers

Lardell Melvin is a single father who was shopping for a larger apartment for himself and his teenage daughter, closer to the Progress Transit depot in Bushwick, when the pink slip hit him and all 244 Progress workers like a runaway MTA bus.

 

"I was doing really well as a manager after 13 years in this business," Melvin says. "Until I arrived at work on Oct. 1 and learned that we were going out of business on Dec. 31 because the MTA was canceling the company's Access-a-Ride contract. I haven't even told my daughter yet because I don't want anything interfering with her high school studies."

 

But father and daughter won't be moving to a larger apartment.
