Oh lol, feel stupid now but I had no idea that both they were coated and that they could wear off. Happening on a lot of buses though.

 

Don't feel stupid dude. Trust me, as much as I do know, I still learn new things each day about the mass transit industry (APTA was an eye opener). This is all a learning process for all of us and we're here to learn from each other.

What is that coat even for? Is the text illegible without it?

 

Black is the standard color for sign covers, HOWEVER...I've come across sign boards where the covers where white. My educated guess? Transit Operator preference.

 

Of course the text is legible with or without it, its just one of those cosmetic things.
