Queens Surface Posted December 28, 2011 Share #1 Posted December 28, 2011 Some interesting stuff has been happening with the M3s as of late. Back in 2008/9 we had 174 M3s in service, Now that amount has fallen down to 150 cars left in service. A very reliable LIRR source told me those 24 M3s are OOS because they need heavy repair work. 12 of which are sitting at the Arch Street Yard and the rest I would guess are at Hillside Facility. Also, it's rumored that a M3 pair is in the works of being converted into a alcohol car. So I'm taking a guessing they are letting those cars sit until the M9 planning really comes into life. Which would decide if they would scrap or repair them up. This is just some information I'm passing on to you guys....
Amtrak7 Posted December 28, 2011 Share #2 Posted December 28, 2011 Well, the MTA Board approved the issuance of an RFP for M9's last week. 236 base + 426 option for both railroads combined.

Alcohol trains got nothing to do with drinking liquor....two different things!

Not that kind of alcohol...its a modified M1/3 car that sprays a alcohol solution on the rail to keep it from freezing during the winter... Amtrak7 Posted December 28, 2011 Share #7 Posted December 28, 2011 I thought alcohol was banned in the LIRR trains? It's allowed, except for certain parades/holidays.
