NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Two women were rushed to the hospital after being attacked on a train as it pulled into a subway station Monday in Midtown.

It happened around 10 a.m. at 59th Street and Lexington Avenue.

Sources tell CBS 2 that a 39-year-old woman was traveling on a northbound number 6 train when another woman lunged at her with a knife, but was held back by other straphangers.

When the train pulled into the station, the suspect lunged at the victim again, stabbing her in the stomach and the shoulder, sources said.

As a group of passengers tried to intervene, the suspect punched a second woman in the face, according to sources.

Straphangers and a security guard from Bloomingdales held the suspect until police arrived. A knife was recovered at the scene.

The two victims were taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No one else was hurt.

Police believe a staring match may have prompted the attack, 1010 WINS’ Al Jones reported.

The suspect appears to be homeless and may have psychiatric issues, police told 1010 WINS. She was taken to Bellevue Hospital for an evaluation.

The investigation is ongoing.

I support this thread. Transit enthusiasts, transit workers, and straphangers, as well as, bus passengers alike must be made aware of the worsening problem of violent crimes in the subway (as well as on the buses) during this decade despite the overall drop in crime since the turbulent 70's. The frequency in crime reflects in the news reports, it's not getting better, but worse.

If the moderation team determines this thread as having practical potential, perhaps this thread could be pinned.
